GRADES OBSERVATIONS8 STUDENT TEACHING EXIT INTERVIEW 9

Grades and Language ProficiencyInasmuch as you plan to become a teacher of English, you areexpected to provide good models of both spoken and writtenEnglish. Therefore, your grades in each class will be basednot only on the content of your work, but also on your ownuse of standard English.

If your written or oral expression on a particular assignmentis unacceptable for a teacher of English, your grade on thatassignment will be no higher than a C, regardless of thecontent of the assignment.

IncompletesYou may be given an Incomplete if your work is of passingquality, but you have not completed all of the requirementsby the end of the course. An Incomplete will not be given ifyour work to that point is not of passing quality.

To receive an Incomplete and later revise the grade, youmust file a petition form, available at Student Services, containing a written agreement between you and theinstructor. If coursework is not completed as agreed, thegrade automatically reverts to an F.

D. Observations

You are required to observe a minimum of 10 different ESLclasses as part of the certificate program. At least six of theobservations must be made in the Intensive English Programat UC Riverside. Two observations may be made in theStudent Teaching classes before you take Student Teaching.Four observations may be made in other ESL programs. Youmay begin making observations as soon as you begin theprogram. It is highly recommended that you observe ESLclasses that correspond to the courses you are taking whileyou are taking those courses. The 10 minimum observationsmust be completed before you begin Student Teaching.

FormsEach time you observe a class, you must complete anobservation form and have it signed by the teacher of theclass. These forms may be obtained from the InternationalEducation Programs Office, Room 237, UC RiversideExtension Center.

It is your responsibility to keep these forms and then submitthem, together with your letter of intent to take StudentTeaching, to the TESOL Coordinator prior to enrolling inStudent Teaching.

Arranging ObservationsGenerally, you may observe any class in the Intensive EnglishProgram any time classes are in session. It is not necessary toschedule the observation with the teacher in advance. However, as a rule, the first several days of a quarter are not agood time to do observations as teachers are still gettingacquainted with their students, and the students are stilladjusting to a new setting. Also, you should check theactivity schedule (available in Room 237 and also posted onthe bulletin board near the first floor restrooms of the UCRiverside Extension Center) to be sure that classes aremeeting on the day when you wish to observe. To observe aclass, you should arrive five to ten minutes before the classbegins and ask the teacher for permission to observe theclass. Permission will generally be given, but there may betimes (e.g., during a test or in-class writing) when theteacher will prefer not to have an observer. Therefore, it is agood idea to have an alternative class in mind in case yourfirst choice is unavailable.

If you wish to observe classes in other programs, you mustmake the arrangements to do so yourself. The observationform must be filled out and signed by the teacher as usual.

Behavior During ObservationsPlease remember that you are in the class as an observer, notas a participant. Please refrain from asking questions ortalking to the students while the class is in progress. Do notinterrupt a class by arriving late or leaving early. Mostteachers are happy to discuss questions that you may haveafter class if time permits.

E. Student Teaching

Student Teaching is the final course in the program.Enrollment is permitted only if all other requirements havebeen or are being completed. (Please note that only one coreor required course may be taken concurrently with StudentTeaching.) It is offered every quarter in the evening.Certificate program students will be placed into groups of twoto five. Student teachers meet once a week to review theirlesson plans with the instructor and their classmates. Eachstudent teacher in the group will prepare nine50-minute lesson plans and teach six to nine of those lessonsto a class of ESL students recruited from throughout thecommunity. This class meets for two hours once a week. Thestudents may be beginning, intermediate or advanced. Yoursupervisor will evaluate your lesson plans each week and willobserve your teaching three to four times per quarter.

Student Teaching is graded Pass/Not Pass. Your grade will bebased primarily on your weekly lesson plans, observations ofyour teaching, and improvement. By the end of the course, you should demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out asuccessful lesson with a minimum of guidance from theinstructor. Your grade will be holistic rather than an averageof grades on individual assignments.

Student Teaching must be done in this program where youcan receive consistent feedback. You may not fulfill therequirement by teaching in another program, nor may yousubstitute prior teaching experience.

Note: Because there are a limited number of spaces forstudent teachers each quarter, please notify the TESOLcoordinator in writing as soon as possible of your intention totake Student Teaching during a particular quarter to reservea space.

You may reserve a space contingent upon the completion ofall requirements (e.g. a score of 50 on the SPEAK test fornon-native speakers).

“When I first started the TESOL Program, I was afraid

but after attending classes I

became more comfortable and

confident. I gained a lot of

knowledge and an excellent

approach on how to be a good

English teacher.”

VII. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONSDURING SUMMER

Length of CoursesThe Intensive English Program is divided into one six-weekand one four-week session during the summer. However, daytime TESOL courses are offered during two four-weeksessions on a space-available basis. Classes usually meet dailyand are equivalent to the same course taken over a 10-weekperiod during the other quarters. Please keep in mind thatdue to the compressed amount of time, the work load mayseem much heavier than it would if you took the same courseor courses during a 10-week quarter.

Some evening courses are also offered during the summer.Summer evening courses normally run five or 10 weeks.

Student Teaching in the SummerThe Student Teaching class in the summer meets for 10weeks. As usual, only one core or required course may betaken concurrently with Student Teaching. This means thatyou may take one course in either July or August. You maynot take one concurrent course in July and another one inAugust.

Standard English UsageStandard English Usage is a prerequisite for English Grammarfor ESL/EFL Teachers, A & B. However, if you enroll inStandard English Usage at the beginning of the summer, youmay be allowed to enroll in English Grammar for ESL/EFLTeachers A or B in August if you have been makingsatisfactory progress to that point.
