Cameron’s Corner Happy New Year everybody! I hope you all had a great holiday with family and friends. Hopefully, it did not go by too quickly. January will be a busy month of getting kids back into routine and helping them understand that we all need to find a new gear. We have two and a half months before spring break to squeeze in as much learning as possible! Our class will do a review of the units we left off with in December and forge ahead with new ones. Students will be busy learning about fractions and decimals, animals and their environments and learning about the role of wealth and poverty around the world. Good luck to everyone’s New Year’s resolutions and I hope to see you around the school. Mr. Cameron

Kindergarten Welcome back! I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season. During the month of December we spent a lot of time rehearsing our play and dance for the Christmas concert. We also got to do some fun Christmas activities like making cookies and ornaments. Our Elf had to go back to the North Pole but hopefully Santa will send him back next year! Language Arts We are focusing on knowing the name and sound that belongs to each letter. We will also continue to look at the elements of story. Math We will continue to work on number sense and counting. Social Responsibility Students did a really good job at following through on routines when excitement was high because of Christmas. Our focus for January will be to listen quietly during circle time. Science/Social Studies We are still working on emotions and keeping our bodies calm even if we feel upset. We will continue to take care of salmon. In January we will learn about what it means to be healthy and we will also look at needs and wants of people. Please stop by or send me an email if you have any questions about the K4/K5 program. Ms. Banks

Postoloski Post January Edition

I hope everyone had a happy holiday season. As we return to classes and a regular schedule, please ensure that your child continues good habits of having his/her homework books signed everyday, completing all assigned work in a timely manner, doing his/her very best on all work, and maintaining regular attendance. As we forge ahead into all subject areas if your child has any difficulties with concepts covered in class, please be sure to contact me right away at the school so I can help. Tutoring is also available through the school. This term in Social Studies we jump into explorers, privateers, Vikings, and pirates as Europeans make their way to North America. In science, students will learn about cellular sexual and asexual reproduction and the solar system (hopefully we’ll get out with telescopes to look at stars and planets near spring break!). In English, students will complete novel studies, writing skills, and continue to build on their reading skills. Math will be comprised of geometry, polynomials, graphing, and probability. It will be a busy term! Ms. P

Language Arts/Home Reading December Reading Tip: To ensure that the book your child chooses to read to you is not too difficult, follow the ‘rule of five.’ If there are 5 words on a page that your child has difficulty reading, then the book is too difficult and can cause frustration. Choose an easier book for your child to read, or read the difficult book to your child. Math In our Numbers Unit the students are still working on skip-counting. Practice at home would help solidify this skill, as they need to be able to recite the 2s, 5s, and 10s (plus 3s, 4s, and 25s for Grade 3) just like the alphabet. January Math Tip: It would be useful to use your daily/weekly money transactions to help your child understand the concept of money, especially how nickels, dimes, etc. relate to skip-counting. Social Responsibility We have identified five important attributes that make us the very best that we can be. The second one we are working on is willpower: “I will never give up!” Science In our unit on Plants, we are discovering what plants need to survive, and what each part of the plant does to help the plant grow. We continue to monitor the life cycle of our king worms, and now also have a bucket of red wriggler worms to produce our own compost from lunch waste. We want to reduce as much of our own waste as possible to help our earth, and compost is great for plants! Social Studies In the Communities unit, the students are learning about what our true needs are (water, food, shelter, clothing), as opposed to what wants are (toys, junk food). We discussed the effect of advertisements on our sense of wants, and how to critique an advertisement so we can make better judgments for our spending. Ms. MacLean/Mrs. Curran

Brooke’s Brag – January 2015 We are continuing to blend teach in the classroom on our on-line, web-based program “Moodle.” The Foods and Nutrition course has us cooking most Thursday or Friday afternoons. Occasionally, we assist with the Wednesday School lunches. The students have a great time doing this and their enthusiasm sure shows! We are still walking over to the Village of Teslin workout center at the Rec Plex to get in some physical activity…a nice addition to our school day.

The students are doing quite well with their courses. One alternative we are looking at in our program is if students want to come to school for part of a day then go to work for part of the day, this would give them some flexibility in their schedule, while at the same time, obtain courses they want. Our high school portion of Teslin School is called the “Teslin Learning Center” where we can accommodate high school students to take any high school course they need or require. Come in at your convenience and let’s have a conversation about what course you want to take. Maybe you need a few courses to complete your graduation; maybe you want to take one course during the winter when you are less busy…let’s talk! If you have any questions about our “Teslin Learning Center” please call Mr. Brooke or Mrs. Stoneman at 390-2570. You are always welcome to our Learning Center.

Our class hopes everyone had a great Christmas and New Year’s holiday season and would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year for 2016 also. Glen Brooke

December was a busy month for us in Tlingit class. We had artists from the Northern Cultural Expressions Society work with all of our students on drawing and painting Northwest Coastal shapes. At the same time we focused on our Christmas unit with songs, practicing our Christmas play and making decorations and props. Shàn Tla, Khàgane, Chukatin
