Principal’s report I would like to pass on my gratitude and admiration for the way the Terrigal community has faced the challenging times we are currently experiencing. Teachers have spent significant amounts of time transforming the way they interact with students and facilitating students in transitioning to the learning from home model. Students have shown determination and resilience to ensure learning continues and parents have been at the forefront of the changes within your homes. Thank you one and all. At this time, I would like to acknowledge the front-line administration staff who have been the calm and reasoned voice at the end of the phone and ensured the communication is accurate shared in a timely manner. With information updates and contradictory changes coming through on a daily basis I will acknowledge we have had to make some adjustments, but I appreciate your understanding at this difficult time. Please feel free to contact the Deputies or myself with any concerns or issues you may have through the school email address. This week I recorded my first ever video blog for students. We are all learning new skills. As part of the video, I encouraged the students to follow their normal daily school routines and timetables classes. I also reminded them that part of the routine is to get up at the end of each lesson and move to their next classroom. In the online world they need to ensure they stand up at the end of each lesson and walk outside for 2 -3 minutes. At recess and lunchtime, they need to follow normal routines of having something to eat and moving around. This would be an opportune to time to go for a walk with a family member and clear the head. Teachers have also been advised to look after their health in this climate and not to respond to students outside of 8:30am to 3:45pm. They will get back to you the next day. Keep safe and well. Support Unit The Support Unit at Terrigal High School is in its second session of the ‘Building My Independence’ program. This program is designed to teach students knowledge and skills in public awareness, purchasing, timetabling, money handling, budgeting, public transport, time management and accessing public services. For all students, and especially those with special needs, achieving independence is an important part of the journey into adulthood. With the right preparation and patience, students are developing the essential skills required to foster independent living. Beyond just telling students how to practice these essential life skills, students are guided in a practical way, so that they not only learn about what is being taught but learn how to apply these skills in the real world.

The Blue Class in the Support Unit have also been conducting an Outdoor Education program, where they have been learning essential skills for outdoor living. The course is providing opportunities to develop positive relationships with the environment, others and ourselves through interaction with the natural world. These relationships are essential for the wellbeing and sustainability of individuals, society and our environment. The program engages students in practical and active learning experiences in natural environments and settings typically beyond the school classroom. In these environments, students develop the skills and understandings to move safely and competently while valuing a positive relationship with natural environments and promoting the sustainable use of these environments.

Year 8 News The Year 8 student cohort recently participated in two fantastic presentations addressing ‘Bullying’. Backflips Against Bullying is an acrobatic Bullying Prevention show that utilizes the performer’s incredible acrobatic skills to captivate and engage audiences. The show shines a spotlight on important issues that children face when it comes to bullying. The show itself was a hilarious, fun, and interactive experience with a very strong and positive say NO to Bullying message.

As a follow up to Safe Internet Day, Year 8 attended a Cyber safety talk given by our local Police School Liaison officer. Senior Constable Peter Hughes addressed the topics, Making good choices online, Cyber safety and the Legal ramifications of misuse. The students were totally engaged during this presentation and learnt some very valuable information. “I learnt that my name is my brand and I want a good brand!” Tom P. Kindness is Cool is the Wellbeing theme for Term 1 and the first recipient of the “Kindness Superstar” award was Haylie T. Haylie was chosen by her peers for her “Always friendly nature, kind smile and helping the new students to our school settle in.” Congratulations Haylie you are a great role model for other students.

Year 8 Integrated Sport this Term has not only highlighted the many talented athletes in Year 8 but more importantly, the values of Fairness and Sportsmanship shown between peers. Mr Parker and Mrs Walker have been very proud to see many acts of Sportsmanship during the Round Robin games. Well done Year 8!

Around TAS Terrigal High School made the most of utilising the Department of Education's STEM T4L kits this term. We were lucky enough to have access to class sets of dedicated laptops, tablets and a selection of robots in different forms, from little colour chasing Ozobots to the very chatty Dashbots and the advanced LEGO Mindstorms. Students across different subject areas had a chance to play, experience and learn with the help of a variety of robot friends. One of the highlight activities was a Year 7 STEM focus day, with two classes spending two periods immersed in STEM activities, and it wasn't just robots! 7 Wollemi were first up, acting as our eager test runners, dabbling with coding, teamwork, tower building, measurement and, you guessed it, robots. 7 Yengo then tried their hands at the activities, pushing the envelope just a little bit further and managing to get their towers towering!

Clean 4 Shore Terrigal High School Marine Studies and Duke of Edinburgh's Award students joined Clean4shore for litter removal in the West Gosford waterways on Fagan's Bay. Threatening rain stayed away as the students first ventured into the mangroves adjacent to the Central Coast Highway where open drains deliver stormwater filled with litter directly into the waterway. Plenty of soft plastic, straws, food wrappings and a tyre were in the eight very full bags collected here. Across the Bay an extensive clean-up of "Lizard Island" had plastic and glass beer bottles, together with soft plastic collected. At times the going was very tough in the thick mangroves, but the jokes and laughter had our group close together retrieving another ten full bags. The final clean-up was on the Western side of the rail line, with only small amounts of litter collected. A check of the foreshore close to the Stadium found some small items, however more concerning was the sailing boat just drifting beside the old Aquatic Club. This was secured and towed across the Bay, then secured on a boring with Maritime contacted for removal options. Big off load by the team of all rubbish into the trailer, well assisted by a special guest, Lucy Wicks, who praised the student’s efforts, and as usual a big healthy lunch. 340 kilos in the 22 bags delivered to Woy Woy Tip. Many thanks to the students and proactive supervision by their supervising teacher.

Mr Storey Teacher (PDHPE)

Wonderful fundraising achievement!

Cameron W in year 11 has raised $16,436.29 as part of the Australian Bush Fire Appeal through the on-line sneaker community and his on-line enterprise, 'Ausnotify'. Cameron has donated $5000 to the RFS and another $6000 to the Koala Preservation Society of NSW with the last instalment going to support the victims and families affected by the devastating bush fires. We are so incredibly proud of Cameron's altruism and of his entrepreneurial ability!
