Introducing our Primary Leaders for 2012

2012 is a unique year for the Primary School with both the Year 6 and 7 students sharing the lead-ership responsibilities. This is due to the fact that from 2013, Year 7 will move up to our new Middle School. This year we have appointed two sets of School Captains, Leadership/Peacekeeper Captains and Student Executive Captains.

We are pleased to introduce them to you and we are confident that they will do an outstanding job as they have already started the year off excellently.

The details of the leadership roles are listed on page 5 and as you can see they will be very busy throughout the year.

Sharing Time at Noah’s Ark

As children settle they are comfortable to share them-selves with others, both their class friends and their teach-ers. To begin, communication may involve only a few words, along with a facial expression. As children grow in confidence, they express themselves more readily.

Using puppets gives a child security as well as sharing through “Star of the Week”, and relaxing with education in book corner.

Parenting with PowerScripture of the week: The Lord is

merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in His mercy.

~ Psalm 103:7

Understanding Why We Get Angry

One of the helpful steps in equipping children to con-trol their anger is to recognise four causes of anger. When your children have settled down after an altercation and you debrief with them about their anger, talk about what is causing it. You and your child may see patterns and then be able to head off the problem earlier next time.

1) Blocked Goals. This is the kind of thing that happens to you, as a parent, when you want to do a project in the play-room and find that Billy has left his lego bricks all over the floor and you keep stepping on them. Or, Billy may want to play with his train set only to find that his sister is using it first. These are blocked goals.

2) Violated Rights. That’s when you, as a parent, are in the bathroom and your daughter keeps knocking on the door. You believe you have the right to go to the bathroom in peace. Your daughter may get angry because her brother came into her room and took her favourite CD. Those are violated rights.

3) Unmet Expectations. You had expected that when you got home you would be able to rest but instead you find a big mess. Or, Jackie thought she would be going to Mc-Donalds but instead you chose to go to Pizza Hut. Those are unmet expectations.

4) Experiencing Unfairness. When someone takes a toy from a younger child, you may feel angry as a parent be-cause you see unfairness. Or, Tom may feel angry with his teacher because she picked someone else for a privilege he thought he deserved. Those unfair situations can pro-voke anger.

Whatever the situation, after a child has settled down, talk about the cause. Discuss the value of sacrificing rights, readjusting goals or expectations and handling unfairness in a godly way. By examining the causes of anger, you can help your children gain a greater perspective and develop longer lasting strategies for managing their emotions.

Strategy for the week: Take time this week to sit with your children and examine the causes of their anger. Help them develop strategies for dealing with anger issues as they arise.

~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

SecondaryHigh School Chapels - Self Image

There has been a change to the for-mat of chapels this year. As some of you would be aware, all Year 10, 11 and 12 stu-dents are studying a Certificate III in Chris-tian Ministry. In the second year of study, students are required to help prepare and present chapels. To facilitate this, students will organize chapels for their houses on a weekly basis. The topics of these chapels will be in line with the topics students are studying in Christian Living.

As I visited the four house chapels today I quickly became aware that the theme was ‘self-image’. What an excellent topic for teenagers. There is tremendous pressure from the media for teenagers to conform to the body images presented in maga-zines, catalogues, television shows and the like. Magazines in particular are very quick to note on the front cover when a celeb-rity has gained weight, is without make-up or heaven forbid, has wrinkles. Yet they are equally quick to point out plastic surgery or botox injections that celebrities may have had. So much impor-tance is placed on one’s appearance.

Too much attention to these false messages of worth and value can lead young people to feel very discontented about their ap-pearance and their feelings of worth. Coincidentally, my daily devotions today discussed Self-esteem – Built on God’s Esteem. God is so clever in how He brings things together – self-image in chapel and self-esteem in my readings. The bible reading from my devotion was “You are precious to Me. You are honoured, and I love you.” Isaiah 43:4 NLT

Today, the message students received was about their value in the Lord’s eyes. He has made each one of us unique and He knows our worth and values us. Instead of being concerned about pleasing others in relation to our appearance and person-ality we should be looking to please the Lord. God wants to give a sense of self-esteem built on His esteem. The question is – will you let Him?

Go to God today, ask Him to tell you who you are and what you’re worth. He will say, “You are precious to Me. You are hon-oured, and I love you.” That’s God’s opinion – make it yours.

1 Samuel 16:7 - “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (NIV)

“You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so pre-cious to God.” 1 Peter 3:4 (NLT)

I would like to commend the students who prepared and pre-sented the house chapels along with the chaplains and staff who supported them. Well done.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remem-ber God’s esteem.

~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

When you give yourself to Christ you become brand new. You get a new set of clothes, a new race to run, and a new finish line to run toward. “Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.”

Anaphylaxis Dear Parents,Across the college, we have a number of children who suffer

from life-threatening anaphylaxis. Although allergic reactions to food are common in children, severe life-threatening reac-tions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, for children who suffer food-induced anaphylaxis, the result could be fatal. Children at King’s may have severe reactions to a variety of prod-ucts including, but not limited to, nuts, fish, milk, eggs and latex. While we realise we can not control everything, we ask you to think carefully when preparing lunches and snacks for school, es-pecially in the prep and lower primary departments, where chil-dren love to share. We ask specifically that if possible you avoid packing peanut butter sandwiches or bars which contain nuts.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

Amazing AchievementCongratulations to Alex Jack 10Y who has been

awarded his AMusA on violin. The Associate in Music, Australia (AMusA) is a diploma awarded by examina-tion to outstanding candidates in the fields of musical performance and music theory by the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). This is an exceptional achievement, especially at the age of 15.
