What is truth?

It’s a great question and one that has been asked throughout history. One of the earliest recorded occasions was the fifth prefect of the Roman province of Judea - a bloke called Pontius Pilate.

Let me paint the scene for you.

It is somewhere between 3:00am and 6:00am. There is an angry mob led by some of the religious leaders of the day, who have dragged Jesus to the Roman judgment hall in

Jerusalem. Inside stands Jesus and outside the crowd is calling for him to be put to death.

Pilate is confused. He has heard about Jesus and his miracles and teachings, and he has been keen to investigate all this. However he now faces a dilemma because the crowd wants Jesus dead and yet the man standing before him has a dignity that shows gentleness, patience, and compassion mixed with strength and calmness.

I believe Pilate wanted to do the right thing, but he was scared of losing his job. His position - praefectus civiatium or governor was given to him by the great Tiberius Caesar himself. He collected taxes, was the general administrator, supervised large-scale projects, was the supreme judge of the region, and maintained law and order with 3000 soldiers at his command.

Each time Pilate suggested that Jesus be freed, the crowd roared their disapproval. Despite the fact that the Jews hated the Romans, they threatened Pilate by saying that they would report him to Caesar if he didn’t approve for this ‘king’ to be killed. That wouldn’t be a good career move.

At one stage a messenger from his wife pushed through the crowd outside and gave a letter to Pilate, which stated that she had had a dream about Jesus and that he was an innocent man (Matthew 27:19). Poor Pilate he was further confused.

It is rather interesting that when Pilate finally asked the question, he didn’t stay for an answer! How ironic! Before Jesus could reply Pilate leaves the room and goes out to listen to the crowd chanting, ‘Crucify him, crucify him.”

Here was the personification of truth and Pilate perhaps in jest, anger or frustration, asks one of the most important questions known to mankind, but he doesn’t wait for the answer!

For many years, critics argued that Pilate didn’t exist and that he was part of a made up story. However in 1961a team of Italian archaeologists discovered a limestone block with an inscription stating that Pilate had dedicated the building to Caesar. I guess there were some embarrassed critics.

Jesus had previously claimed that he was the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6) and Pilate realising that Jesus was innocent of the charges against him publicly washed his hands in front of the crowd indicating he was not responsible for his death.

Have you ever wondered what happened to Pilate? Well, Eusibus, a Greek historian, tells us that Pilate, just as he feared, was removed from his position, recalled to Rome, stripped of his honours and with his pride damaged he took his own life.

When people compromise with sin and evil - the outcome is never good. Poor Pilate – he should have ignored the crowd and listened to his conscience (and his wife).

It’s worth a thought.

OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL SUPERVISION

School hours are 8.40am to 3.25pm. The school yards are supervised from 8.20am of a morning to 3.50pm. I appreciate that for a small number of students, there is a pre school mathematics class being held. This is one morning a week.

In the afternoon the school provides the Study Centre for students. Students are encouraged to complete homework during this time. If students spend time after school they must be in the library, unless official arrangements have been made by teachers.

If you have a student who is arriving or leaving outside of these hours, your duty of care as

a parent is to make arrangements with OSHC and to take your child to OSHC, where charges apply. We thank you for adhering to these arrangements.

SCHOOL FEES Reminder - Fees are now

overdue. Only two weeks left to the end of Term 2.

CONCERNS REGARDING STUDENTS UNSUPERVISED USE OF INTERNET

We are being made more aware each week that many of our students are accessing and being exposed to inappropriate content on the Internet when using their devices at home. Parents are encouraged to check what their children are viewing. Some of our students in primary school are watching Netflix shows that are recommended for 17 year olds. We are also aware that many primary students have Facebook accounts when the legal age for this is 13 years of age. For the safety and well-being of your children, we highly recommend that you limit the amount of time your child spends on their

electronic devices. Ensure that phones and ipads are NOT in their bedrooms of a night. Monitor what they are using their device for. Check their history and remember that as the adult you are in charge. We are sure you will agree with us that as parents you are ultimately responsible for what your child is exposed to at home, just as we as teachers are when they are at school.

Here is a link you might like to visit to check out some games and information to help your children and reinforce what they are learning about being safe on line. “Be Internet Awesome”

STUDENTS LATE TO SCHOOL OR LEAVING EARLY

If a child is late to school they must report directly to the front office where they sign in and receive a late slip. They then proceed immediately to class where they hand the slip to the class teacher.

Once on campus students are not permitted to leave campus until the end of the day.

Students who need to leave early must report directly to student reception where again they sign out. Students are to be signed out by parents, unless prior written arrangements

have been made with the College office.

This is a Work, Health and Safety issue. As a school we need to account for the presence of every person on campus. Your assistance and adherence to these procedures is greatly appreciated.
