Principal’s Report

Student Leaders

Student leadership is so important and it is one of our key priorities as we continue to develop, grow and improve the culture of Kelso High Campus. I’m really impressed with how far our student leadership teams have come in the past few years and I’m very proud of the contribution they make to our campus. Our leaders really epitomise the key aspects of our campus vision. They:

- show pride in themselves, their work, their fellow students and the campus;- value the campus and the learning that takes place here;- are building their capacity; and- have the drive to achieve their best

A lot has to do with the great role models we’ve had in the student teams themselves during the past few years. This year 51 students have been selected in the SRC, ARC, Year 12 Leadership Team and as Sports Captains. Importantly, a total of 80 students nominated for these positions. Thanks and well done to everyone who nominated, including those who missed out. I think it is wonderful that we have so many students who want to be involved. It shows we are in a healthy position. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our team coordinators: Mrs Mel McFarland, Ms Zoey Tanner, Ms Bec Bosianek and Casey Mackay and special mention to Mrs Stacey Jones and Ms Coreena Martin who have done a wonderful job in the last two years leading the SRC. Both teachers will be stepping down in 2019, and Ms Adams will take on that role in 2019.

All Day Every Day

Last week we recognised 25 students from Year 7-12 with our “KELSO HIGH ALL DAY EVERY DAY” recognition award. The award, appropriately named by our new Year 12 Leadership Team, recognises those students who consistently do the right thing: regular attendance; consistently wearing uniform; completing classwork and assessment tasks and behaving themselves. Five students from each year group are identified at the start and middle of each term, based on information that is entered into Sentral, our online student management system. These students received a canteen voucher.

Parent Focus Group

Our next Parent Focus Group is on Tuesday 6 November from 5:15-6:45 pm. All are welcome. Some of the main things we will be discussing include: An update on the senior lockers; major capital building projects; the Student Engagement Index Tool, which we use for the above mentioned award and some ideas of how we can use that tool to reward students, including eligibility to attend non-compulsory excursion and sport.

Top performances: Our new leadership teams, who were recognised today at an induction assembly. Special mention to the

SRC who are off to a flying start, organising Red Day on Friday last week to raise awareness for childsafety as part of Daniel Morcombe Day and a Halloween cake stall on Wednesday this week withproceeds going to KHC’s World Vision sponsor child.

Zac Belmonte who represented Kelso High at the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention in Sydney thisweek.

Our very capable Ag team for their efforts and participation at the Scone Beef Bonanza and Cowra Show. Not only did the team achieve great results, they helped to pay their own way with Bunnings BBQs duringrace week.

Girls League Tag, who performed well in warm conditions on Tuesday and played in the right spirit.

Boys Cricket – a good effort against a stronger Bathurst High Campus outfit on Tuesday, going down by3 wickets.

Cirkus Surreal – bringing spring to life at Mayfield Gardens.

Please give me a call or drop by to discuss anything concerning your child and Denison College, Kelso High Campus.

iWonder STEM Program

Kelso High Campus has started the iWonder enrichment sessions for 24 Year 5 students from nine of our local primary schools. On Tuesday afternoon of Week 2, 3 and 4 students have been selected to participate in series of STEM enrichment activities. As a campus we strive to extend and enrich our students and this is an opportunity to share our staff expertise and facilities with students who have a keen interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as high abilities in this area.

This week students engaged with a theory and practical lesson in Chemistry. We welcome the students to our campus. Thanks to the Science and Technology staff, Ms Beddis, Mr Dingle, Mr Allan and Mr Le for preparing workshops for the students. We would also like to thank Year 9 and 10 students who are assisting with the program.

Stroevey Challenge Number 247

An Octo-digit number?

Can you find an 8 digit number with the following property?

The 1st digit tells you how many zeros there are in the number, the 2nd digit tells you how many ones there are in the number, the 3rd digit tells you how many twos there are in the number, etc.

For example, with the number 21200, there are 2 zeros, 1 one, 2 twos, 0 threes and 0 fours.

What is the required 8 digit number?

NSW Schools State Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Sydney

Denison College Kelso High Campus Year 12 student Zac Belmonte was one of 100 students attending the NSW Schools State Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday, October 30.

The one-day convention gave selected senior high school students the opportunity to discuss and consider issues related to the Australian Constitution.

This year’s convention focused on Section 44 of the Constitution, which sets out restrictions on who can be a candidate for the Parliament of Australia. With Section 44 serving as key topic in the dual citizenship scandal that has generated controversy in federal parliament over the past year, Zac, 17, has followed the fiasco with plenty of interest.

Zac was nominated by Kelso High Principal Mick Sloan and Year 12 Advisor Josephine Driver to attend the convention on the basis of his strong interest in politics and his involvement with the school’s Student Representative Council [SRC].

As well as being the only student to attend the convention from a Bathurst school, Zac was the sole Central West representative at the event.

Zac, who is also a keen painter, will be the first representative from the Central West since 2015.

“At the convention, every student has a chance to share their point of view, leading to a vote to send 30 of those in attendance to the national convention in Canberra next year,” he said. “It’s not really a debate, but more of a discussion.”

Zac’s interest in politics stemmed from the 2016 United States presidential election, in particular Donald Trump and his policies, and he has career aspirations to potentially enter the political sphere after school.

“I’d love to get involved with local politics one day, and maybe move on to federal politics,” he said. “You might see me as mayor of Bathurst hopefully!”
