***We can all work together to
rid the community of Head
Lice. Let’s check our heads
once per week!***
Welcome back and good luck to everybody for
Term 4. We hope that all students, families and
staff were able to re-charge their batteries and
prepare for another hard working term.
Term 4 means that all students must have a
School hat when outside. The school policy
states that from September to April, ‘no hat, no play’.
The hat must be our wide-brimmed, navy
blue school hat with the logo. Hats are available to purchase through the school
and cost $12.
Thank you to all of our
students who
participated in the
AFL Footy
‘Dress Up Day’ on the last day of
Term 3.
Since Richmond won
their first premiership
in 37 years, it was only
fair to feature their
supporters in this
photo. Well done,
Tigers!

Happy Birthday to Harry Easom, Lily Freeman,
Annabelle Moses, Casey Cousins and Hayden Clarke who are
having birthdays this week. On behalf of the Puckapunyal
Primary School Community, we wish them all a very Happy
Birthday!
Walk to school: October is “walk to school” month! While every month is a great time to walk to school, we are
encouraging students to have a go. Teachers are counting active travel every day of this month so perhaps this could be
a part of your daily routine, particularly if you live in Puckapunyal. Our school has already won $150 for registering
early and there are other prizes on offer through the Mitchell Shire.
Super foods: Not all foods are created equal – some are packed so full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential
fatty acids and other beneficial substances that they’ve been deemed ‘superfoods’. It can be challenging because some
of these foods are not common or tasty for children’s palates. So let’s start with an easy one: YOGHURT contains
active cultures that restore a healthy balance in the digestive system. One cup contains 50% more calcium than the
same size serving of milk and is packed with potassium, riboflavin, magnesium and phosphate. Just watch the sugar
levels.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
REWARD UPDATE Melba has taken an early lead and we are
seeing lots of positive behaviour from many
of our students. Keep up the great work
everyone!

(please see Term 4 menu and tips on page 7).
This week the menu is - Hot dogs $3.00 each
Chocolate/Strawberry Milk $2.00 each

Good Luck to the 27 students who will be representing
the Seymour District and our school at the Division
Athletics Carnival tomorrow. We will report how they
went next week.

At assembly this week Enthusiasm was announced as our School Value of the week. That means teachers are looking for
students who are demonstrating ‘Enthusiasm’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week award. We encourage parents
to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.
What is Enthusiasm? Aiden Toby read out the meaning of Enthusiasm.
‘Enthusiasm is doing things with zest and excitement. It is really looking forward to something. Enthusiasm comes from
having a positive attitude about the things you do.
You can be enthusiastic about making your bed, going on a holiday or feeding the dog. It is being cheerful and giving
your best to whatever you do. Enthusiasm makes boring things fun.’
Each week at assembly, SRC representatives remind our
students of a few important school rules. This
week, SRC representatives, Finlay Koch and Harry
Fletcher reminded our students of the following rules:
The S.R.C. would like to remind you of a few rules to
follow when riding your bike to school:
- You must wear a helmet at all times
- Bikes are not to be ridden in the school grounds
- Bikes must be put in the bike shed when you arrive
at school
- Be mindful of pedestrians
- Always use the crossing
- You must hop off your bike and walk it across the
crossing
- Do not ride your bike through the car parks; you
must hop off and walk it
Please discuss these rules with your children to help ensure
that they understand.
On Wednesday 15th November, 2017 we invite families to come to the Puckapunyal Primary School
Family Fun Day! This is an invitation to all parents of pre-school and primary school children and other
members of the community. It is going to be a great day! We have also asked unit leaders to allow defence members
who are our parents to attend. The day will begin at 1:00p.m.
Monday 6th November is our next
Pupil Free Day. Therefore, students are
not expected at school that day.
It is a Planning Day for staff. It gives all
teachers the opportunity to work on the
Victorian Curriculum planners for 2018.
Win-some, lose-some: Using compromise to resolve conflict
Adults have a significant impact on how children deal with conflict. Often adults encourage children to deal with
conflict by compromising. Compromising means that no one wins or loses outright. Each person gets some of what they
want and gives up some of what they want. Many children learn how to compromise as they grow and find ways to
negotiate friendships. It is common around the middle of primary school for children to become very concerned with
fairness and with rules as a way of ensuring fairness. This may correspond with an approach to resolving conflict that is
based on compromise.
Win-win: Using cooperation to resolve conflict
Using a win-win approach means finding out more about the problem and looking together for creative solutions so that
everyone can get what they want.

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and
satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing
schools, beginning school for the first time and even
returning for another school year can be daunting for
students and parents. It is great to see parents eager to
support their children at this time and be an integral part of
their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel like a
chat about school and your child, please find me!

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,
etc. Parents have indicated that this information is very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are very busy
places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means that we can plan to cover
certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 6 & 8 Literacy: We are learning about vowel sounds. We are writing sentences and using capital letters and full stops.
Numeracy: We are learning about the number 19 and using concrete materials to help us do subtraction. We are also
learning about location.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 4 & 8 Literacy: .We are learning about adverbs and working on our book launch books.
Numeracy: We are learning about subtraction, measurement and number lines.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 3 & 4 Literacy: We are working on our book launch books and distinguishing between fact and fiction.
Numeracy: We are learning about subtraction, measurement and number lines.
Middle School Years 3/4 Rooms 9 & 10 & 11 Literacy: Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on writing our picture story books as well as the VCOP
components.
Numeracy: We will be working on the four processes as well as looking at timetables and calendars in Numeracy. Times
tables will be practised throughout the week.
Senior School Years 5/6 Rooms 1 & 2 Literacy: Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on writing our picture story books as well as the VCOP
components.
Numeracy: We will continue to focus on decimals and fractions, area and circumference and properties of 2D and 3D
shapes. Times tables will be practised throughout the week.
As you are aware the Year 5/6 students have been training to complete the Great Victorian Rail Trail from
Tuesday 24th – Friday 27th October. They worked hard over the holidays to continue their training.

Recently, the Puckapunyal Primary School applied for a Term 4 Sporting Schools Grant from the Federal Government.
If we are successful we will soon receive a grant.
That means, in Term 4 the Puckapunyal Primary School is offering an opportunity for students to participate in some
Before School Sport.
To apply for the grant we had to choose different sports to be the themes of the sessions – for Term 4 the sports are:
Tuesdays - Triathlon (Jogging and Swimming) at the Area Swimming Pool for Years 3-6 students (students will be
walked to school by staff after the sessions). This activity is a great opportunity for students who want to enter the
Individual Triathlon in early December.
Wednesdays - Triathlon (Cycling) at school (using Sanananda Rd) for Years 3-6 students. This activity is a great
opportunity for students who want to enter the Individual Triathlon in early December or the 4 Day Bike Ride in October.
Thursdays - Golf at school for Foundation to Year 6 students.
**All sessions will begin at 7:30am sharp and finish at 8:45am in time for school. Students will need to be there on
time to participate because the group may move around eg. jogging around the block, etc.**
The Program will begin during Week 2 of Term 4.
Any student in the year levels that match the activity can attend. There is no cost. Class teachers and other staff will be
there to meet the students, supervise them and give them an opportunity to participate.
Please see the timetable on the next page. To participate in any of the sessions, we must have a return slip before the date
of the intended session. Families can pick and choose optimal dates. Return slips will be available at the front of the
school office and on our school website. Please do not hesitate to contact the school for any more information.
