School Leadership Opportunities & Transition Programs for Pre-Schoolers in our Local Area Our School Leaders and Stage 3 students have been assisting our Kindergarten and pre-school students on a number of occasions. Meeting and greeting our 2018 kindergarten students and their families as well as visiting local pre-schools and reading to the children. Ms Roser was so impressed with our KR students as they demonstrated leadership skills hosting four year olds from ‘Only About Children’ and showing them what ‘big school’ was all about.

Ernst & Young Gives Back to the Community Thank you to the team from Ernst and Young for completing many projects whilst maintaining enthusiasm and energy throughout the day. Our gardens have been mulched, the sandpit replenished, student chairs scrubbed and maths resources organised. Royal Life Saving Incursion Students in Kindergarten and Stage Three attended an incursion presented by the Royal Life Saving Association. Students were taught vital safety messages for protecting themselves in Inlet Water Ways. Inlet Water Ways are the number one cause of drowning in students aged 5-12! We encourage you to continue to speak to your children about safe behaviours around water. Miss Young

Recount by Nana 6/5Y:

The top safety tips for Inlet Water Ways: 1- Always wear a life jacket - this is compulsory for children

2- Inlet water is murky and dangerous to dive in ... take care when swimming

3- The AQUA code - go together, stay afloat and wave, float on your back

4- Never swim alone 5- In an emergency call 000

Student Contributions Experiment Farm / Old Government House Excursion Recount 4/3D

We arrived at a place that wasn’t all grey and polluted like the city. It was a place that birds could sing without coughing; fly without a care, a place caught back in time where you could escape the worries of the wild city. That place was Experiment Farm in Parramatta. The house used to be lived in by a Mr John Harris an early settler and doctor back in convict times. When we arrived we were divided into 3 groups. We ventured into the beautiful garden and learnt about plants that dropped fruits the size and shape of footballs. We were shown lots of plants and how they were grown and used to make medicine. We planted some corn seeds and learnt all about the farmer James Ruse and how he was a self-sufficient farmer who was able to survive off his crops. We then went into the house and learnt about the doctor John Harris. I had already known that back in the day surgeons had done surgeries awake! But I also learnt that that patients were given sticks to bite down on with the more screaming the better to deal with the pain. Lastly we walked down steps into a cold cellar under the house. We were shown a slide show and answered a quiz about early Parramatta. I had such a great time I was so sad to go. Goodbye Experiment Farm. After that we went to Old Government House where we were met by a lady dressed up in clothes from the 1800’s. She was a teacher who took us into an early settlers classroom. She taught us a lesson, we had to sit up straight and write on a slate with chalk. If we did the wrong thing you could get the cane! She was very strict and luckily none of us did anything wrong! We then went into the house where we were shown bells that the Governor would pull a rope that would ring the bell for the servant to come. Upstairs we learnt that they used wool for toilet paper! We played with toys they used to play with; cows knuckle bones and lots of other fun toys. As much as I would love to live in these amazing houses I still love living in 2017 and in my own house the most. By Kate, 4/3D We arrived at Experiment Farm and were placed into 3 groups. My group went with Trevor and Ana. Firstly we went into the surgeon’s room. We learnt how leaves can be put into a mortar and pestle to make medicine. I also learnt that in the olden days the surgeons used to cut the patients legs while they are still awake! Next we went down into the cellar and it was cold. We learnt all about old maps and how Parramatta used to look. Then we were taken to the back garden where we planted some seeds by using a tool called a trowel. We watered them and dug a shallow hole before we put the seeds in. We did some reading, matching and attaching game where we had to find out information about different types of plants used back in the olden days to make medicine and food. We then said goodbye to Experiment Farm and headed off to Old Government House. In the bus I thought about how today we use proper medical equipment in hospitals and am I am so happy that I would not be able to feel it when they cut off my leg! We sat under a big shady tree in the park to eat lunch. I had a jam sandwich muffin, waffles and some vegetables. I thought about how I didn’t have to grow my food I could just buy it from Woollies. Rajbir, 4/3D
