Hello and welcome everyone It is that time of the year again, another Newsletter.
I can’t believe that we are already halfway through the year. Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun?
Speaking about fun, Sudbury House has been very busy planning and preparing for the launch of the new ‘Empowering Communities Program’ model. This new model has replaced the Community Neighbourhood and Development Services and commenced in the first week of July 2019. We are committed to ensuring strategic and sustainable approach to our future development. We are also aware that the demand for our services is growing and so
through careful and thoughtful planning we will pursue the opportunities to enhance and develop the range of services and facilities we offer to the local community. We also need to consider the social and community environment we’re operating in and determine just how Sudbury can most effectively serve the community in this changed, and changing, environment.
To do this we engaged Jo Wilkie of Jo Wilkie Consulting to develop a future direction for Sudbury House that builds on all it has achieved over 30 years that places us in a strong position to respond to changing the community landscape. This was achieved through an organisational review and extensive consultations with current and potential new stakeholders. including an Environmental scan of other models of community house’s locally and globally. The outcome of this process has been a seminal report that forms the blueprint for Sudbury Community House’s future direction, offering a range of innovative, exciting new approaches to community building, genuinely owned and driven by the community: Sudbury House is the just privileged facilitator of this. We are also adopting the recommended values-based model to integrating Governance, Strategy, Management and Operations as a strong foundation for collaborative approaches to addressing social issues and community-building. Ms Wilkie has over 20 years in leadership roles in the community sector and a further 20 years at Lotterywest , also Big Ideas which involved organisational development, business development and cross-sector partnerships (government, community and corporate). She remains, post contract, a strong friend of Sudbury House and continues to offer support as we implement the report.
We are very fortunate to have Ian Thompson who has recently joined the Sudbury House team as a Volunteer Project
Manager for the ‘Empowering Communities Program’. Ian comes to us from Leadership WA’s Signature 2012 Alumni. He is
an experienced Project Manager who runs a program of strategic projects and is very familiar with the Project Management
Programs and frequently develops the project objectives, scope, plans and reports for his employer Roy Hill. He has also
previously been active in a Not for Profit Professional Body and developed similar project plans on their behalf.
Vision - A place of community; a place of belonging, being, and becoming where people feel accepted, safe, and free to develop and grow.
Mission - We exist to strengthen and enhance individual, family and community life.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, the Wadjuk (Perth region) people and recognise their continuing connection to
land, water and community. We wish to acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region.

Sudbury House Board of Management. The Board consists of representatives from community groups,
not-profit-agencies, parents that use the Centre, local and state government agencies that provide services and
support for families with children in the early years and community members who express interest in the
wellbeing of children in the early years. The Chairperson of the Board Stuart Mackenzie has resigned from his
position due to unforeseen circumstances. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stuart for his hard
work, dedication and commitment in building a strong and prosperous organisation. In the brief period,
Stuart’s stewardship of Sudbury House has been characterised by innovative ideas, strategic thinking and, most
valuable, his tireless efforts to increase the credibility and visibility of Sudbury House in Mirrabooka and the
surrounding areas. It is our very great pleasure on behalf of the Board and the staff of Sudbury House as a
whole to thank you for your dedication and the great job you have accomplished in your brief term as Chair
and wish you all the very best in your future endeavours and we look forward to your ongoing involvement in
Sudbury House. Chris Ward has been elected as interim Chairperson. Chris is currently the Deputy Director at
Edmund Rice and has a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills working in the Community Services sector.
We welcome Chris and look forward to working with her as we aim to achieve great things in the year ahead.

together in an effort
to help others in need
Some special visitors came along to sell raffle tickets at the Sudbury House
‘Biggest Morning Tea’ event. This boosted a benevolent
monetary contribution from them that was given to Sudbury House.
This very kind and thoughtful act allowed us to do what we do best, and that is to support a great
cause, inline with our mission, which is “ We exist to strengthen and enhance individual, family
and community social health and wellbeing in life’.
The donation was passed onto to a Community member who has experienced a life changing
event that left with nothing, consequently this was used to help re – establish their life journey.
Students from the Community Services Course run by Industry Skills Training; instigated the fund
raising having been impressed with Sudbury House after a recent visit.
What beautiful weather we had for this Celebration.

A few tips on helping our Environment
Have showers rather than baths. Short showers use less water and also
there is less use of the energy to heat the water.
Parent Advisory Committee
We are inviting parents to join our Advisory Committee.
Meetings to be held bi-monthly at the Centre.
The purpose of the group will be to monitor, evaluate and
provide feedback regarding your child’s Care and Education
at Sudbury Community House Care and Development Centre.
This feedback will help us improve our services and work to
achieving better outcomes for families and children.
The Sudbury House Early Learning Centre Nature Playground is complete, this was made possible with a LotteryWest grant and funds from the Dept for Communities
At the launch held at Sudbury House Early Learning Centre, Virginia Aden talked about the Nature Playground and
what it means to and for our children. She thanked Lotterywest for the grant to repair and upgrade of
our Outdoor Environment. Research has found that intentional contact with natural play spaces is
crucial to mental and physical health, especially with children.
Summary of key benefits for children engaging in nature play:
• Children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pine cones and gum nuts can help to
stimulate children’s immune system as well as their imagination.
• Children who spend more time outside tend to be more physically active and less likely to be overweight.
• Children who play in natural settings are more resistant to stress; have lower incidence of behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression;
and have a higher measure of self-worth.
• Children who play in natural settings play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved language and collaboration
skills. Single use, repetitive play equipment becomes boring quickly.
• Natural, irregular and challenging spaces help children learn to recognise, assess and negotiate risk and build confidence and
competence.
• Children who play in nature have more positive feelings about each other.
• Bullying behaviour is greatly reduced where children have access to diverse nature-based play environments.
• Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are reduced after contact with nature.
On behalf of the Children, Families, Staff and Board of Management we would
like to say a Great Big Thankyou to the Premier of WA Hon. Mark McGowan
and Lotterywest for the funding received and the Department of Communities
for their generous contribution to this project, to our local MP Janine Free-
man for presenting the Cheque and for all of you who have taken time to
come and celebrate with us. An acknowledgement of the contribution this
Nature Playground will make to the development and natural education of
our children.

Play complements the ‘formal’ curriculum in an Early Childhood Learning Centre and quality play
opportunities are an integral part of a stimulating learning environment. Through play, children
interact and make friends, engage in role -play and extend their creativity; they test themselves
physically and master skills, improve their fitness and health, and engage in self-directed
activities that aid individual development towards independent adulthood.
Learning Outcome 1—CHILDREN HAVE
A STRONG SENSE OF IDENTITY
In early childhood settings when children feel accepted they
develop a sense of belonging, attachments and trust those that
educate and care for them. As children are developing their
sense of identity, they explore different aspects of it (physical,
social, emotional, spiritual, cognitive) through their play and their relationships.
When children feel safe, secure and supported to explore and learn, they grow in confidence.
Below are examples of our children finding their identity:
Being open to new challenges and discoveries. Persist when faced with challenges
and when first attempts are not successful
