The East Bath Learning Partnership & MAT

Bathampton Primary and other Schools involved in the East Bath Learning Partnership are working with other Bath schools to plan a Bath Area Primary Multi Academy Trust. This project has included a detailed consideration of Finance, Education and Governance. The Steering Group gave a presentation on 30th November to representatives of the Regional Schools Commissioner. I completed the presentation by thanking everyone involved and saying what a privilege it has been to work with such committed and able people and thanked the local authority officers for their expert support.

In 2017 the school governors of all of the interested schools will have to consider their response and whether they believe it in the best interest of the school to become an academy and part of this MAT. Part of the process involves consulting with staff and parents.

Our school was mentioned in the Bath and Wiltshire Parents Magazine. Quotes below:-

‘At the end of last term, seven local primary schools from across East Bath joined up to share best practice and support professional development’.

‘During the day, 130 teachers and school staff took part in workshops and networking opportunities aimed to support their professional development. These included Growth Mindset, E-safety and Outside Learning, to name just a few.’

‘Mr Joe Beament, the Headteacher at St Saviour’s Junior School, said “All the Headteachers and Governors of the EBLP schools are committed to sharing training and ensuring we offer the best possible school experience to the children in our community”.

School Magazine

I want to thank the ever-resourceful Lian Nicholson for her work on the School Magazine and the Writing Competition. Lian encouraged the children to enter a writing competition and asked Ian Waller the editor of the Bath and Wiltshire Parent Magazine if he would judge the results. She sourced a huge collection of books as prizes, and created a certificate. You will be able to read the children’s writing in the next edition of The Bathampton Bell. Lian wrote ‘I'm looking forward to getting rid of the mountain of books over here and making a few children smile. I think Barnaby thought Santa had come a little early this year!’

Cheque donated It is always a pleasure giving money to good causes. Representatives of two charities came

in to collect money raised in the Grow £1 project for Jessie May and Dorothy House and also spoke to the children in assembly about the work done by their charities.

Sarah Batterbury and her friend Sara came to teach Class Four and Five some sign language. The signing was great fun! Sara is deaf and did some fun signing games with us – one of the games I won! We also learnt lots of signs about Christmas. By Amelie It was actually quite a shock that some people could remember some of the sign language from last year, even though they haven’t been using it regularly. By Kit

Reception Adventure

It’s always good to get outside and despite lots of rain and some freezing temperatures Reception have taken their learning out and about. The children have been using the school woods as inspiration to write, create, discover and calculate.

We started with a Play Wood session in which the children enjoyed sticking leaves on cardboard drawings of things we might find in the woods, feeling trees with a blindfold on and being guided around by a partner and playing on the swing. The class also learnt the skipping song ‘Let’s go walking through the woods’ - skipping along the paths the children created. They worked hard to sort leaves into colours on pieces of wood and of course throwing leaves into the air.

We have made our own class tree. Talking about the different parts of the tree made the class think carefully about the differences between a stick, a twig and a branch. Scrunching and twisting the paper helped to build our wrist and finger strength whilst discovering how to work as part of a team.

The class went out to search for their own Autumn treasure and then used the treasure to plan and create their own autumn creations.

Inspired by PlayWood we have continued our outdoor explorer sessions every Thursday

afternoon. We have enjoyed watching the seasons changing and talking about the wildlife around us. We have made cosy dens for woodland animals, made huge dens for us to shelter from the elements, designed our own scavenger hunts and had a go at making our own transient art displays using the natural materials around us. Last week’s frost was especially exciting.

We turned our outdoor area into an ice investigation area and experimented with different ways to melt and crack the ice. We then went on an icy expedition around the school grounds and on to the bonfire field. We enjoyed making tracks in the frost - some of us even made frost angels. During our expedition we were rather surprised to find a large crocodile lurking under the trees. Luckily we managed to sit on him before he did too much damage!

Reception have been loving getting to grips with “ Letters and Sounds” and this is really starting to show in their amazing reading and writing skills. They

have been working hard in the post office roleplay and as a class wrote a letter to post back to school during our “ big walk “ morning. They have since decided to write back to their buddies. We have been very interested in learning about the birds that live in our trees. We have learnt a song about an Owl to help us count forwards and add one more to a number and we have learnt a song about a robin to help us count backwards and find one less. We talked about what an owl looked like and made our own owls for our tree. It has been an amazing term and we wish all the children and families a very Happy Christmas from all in Reception.

Class One on Ice

Class One made the most of the cold and frosty weather this term to enhance their 'Frozen Places' topic. They made ice on the outdoor area; with lots of toys frozen inside, and created large-scale art work on the field. In the picture they can be seen making a piece of art inspired by the artist Richard Long, who uses the natural environment to create patterns and paths.

Class Two Outdoor Adventures At the beginning of term we went on a trip to the Dry Arch. When we got there Tania told us about how the Dry Arch is used by local people to grow fruit and vegetables. She then split us into three groups to complete three different activities.

One of the activities involved kneading dough to make bread. Some of us added tomato and cheese to our bread to make pizzas. We baked the bread in the fire oven. Afterwards we tasted our bread. It was yummy!

We also looked at all the vegetables growing at the Dry Arch. We saw sprouts, curly kale, rhubarb, beetroot, squash, carrots, onions and radishes. We also had a peek in the polytunnel to see what was growing there. The final activity everyone enjoyed. Keith gave us lots of crates to pick up all the fallen apples. Altogether we filled up 23 crates. Each crate made 5 litres of apple juice. So we think we filled up enough crates to make 115 litres of apple juice! Keith told us that the process of picking up all the apples is called gleaning.

On the way back we took some eating apples, they were delicious! We all had fun at the Dry Arch. We hope we can go again some time. Written by Class Two

Class Two’s Guy

Inspired by the history of bonfire night Class Two created a Guy Fawkes. We had a hugely impressive bonfire thanks to James Nash and others and the guy has not been seen since.

Firework Poetry

We also created our own poetry about fireworks. Read some of our work below. Friendly fireworks, Exploding with a bang in your ears, Running rang tangs, Echoing smoke everywhere, Whirring wild ones, Out of this world like an alien invasion, Rang tangs in rockets racing, Kind curtsying kings, Spectacular sparkling spins. By Georgia Fantastic fireworks fizzing, Illuminate the sky like fireflies, Red, blue, yellow, green flying as high as the tallest trees. Excellent fireworks soaring up high, WHOOSH, BOOM, FIZZ, POP, Out of this world. Red rockets ramming, KAPOW, KABOOM, Supersonic surprises sparkling. By Noah Findlay

Class Two & Light and Shadow In science, we have been exploring our topic of light and dark by discovering how shadows are created.

We also enjoyed an afternoon of outdoor activities with Tania Orgill based around our topic light and dark.

Class Three @Bristol

Class Three had a very exciting trip to @ Bristol last week. It included an amazing trip around our solar system in the 3D Planetarium, a host of interactive activities and displays to explore and a Forces Show which even included Mathilda being hosted up using seven pulleys to pop a chicken back in his nest and being helped down by Jake’s dad when the pulley system got stuck! A huge thanks to the parents that accompanied us on this trip and helped the children interact and learn from all the exhibits.

Here are some extracts from the children’s recounts. I really liked the planetarium. I had to close my eyes a lot. It looked like we were going to crash into Earth! We also went through some rock. We had to put 3D glasses on so it was 3D and it was amazing. By Giacomo

@Bristol was a very big place. It was quiet because we were the first school to arrive there. There was a clever robot. You had to put bricks down and he would pick them up and make a tower. By Jacob. W There was a wheel that was very hard to push because it was actually pushing a gigantic waterwheel. By Sophie There was machines everywhere. The one I liked most was the magnetic sand. It was actually sand that stuck to metal. My second favourite was the bubbles. They were extraordinary. By Rosa I saw a humungous water wheel. It was like a giant hamster wheel. It was hard to push it at first, but it got easier and easier. By Nina I particularly liked the parachute activity where you twisted the lever and the foam rocket with the parachute went up. By Mateus We also did a puzzle of the human body. We had to put all the bones and organs inside the body. It was so exciting! By Florence

Class Three Measuring Class Three have been learning about measuring this week. They have been learning how to estimate, measure accurately and to problem solve.

Outside, amongst the trees, Class Three were estimating the weight of all sorts of plants, berries and animals, including themselves, and then checking their predictions using scales. Tania even made a seesaw to see if children could test whether they could find a friend that weighed the same as them.

Inside, Class Three were measuring capacity. This is tricky, as unlike a ruler where each increment is worth 1 cm on jugs one increment can be measuring 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 or even 100 millilitres! So, once the children had worked together finding out what each incremental mark on the jug was worth, they then got measuring! Once again children worked in small groups and helped each other to measure the capacity of a host of containers. We then compared our results and learnt that you had to look really carefully at the jugs to check you were using the same units of measurement. This week Class Three will be further honing their measuring skills by making a magic potion.

Class Four Adventures

What’s going on?

If you would like to find out what is going on in this photo please go to the Class Four blog on the school website. It might surprise you!

Alkmaar 70th Year Gift

This may not look like a history lesson but it is. Children in Class Four planted out a bagful of tulips in the field. They were a gift from the town of Alkmaar in Holland. The story behind this is deeply moving and is available at http://www.bath-alkmaar.eu/origins.asp ‘The City of Bath is twinned with Alkmaar in the Netherlands and they have sent us lots of bulbs! Tania told us about the importance of bulbs during WW2 and how Dutch people would eat them as there was no other food!’

This photo is part of the story and the children in it are now 80 years old or older. Some children wrote about the tulips during our outdoor session: Maggie, Ursula, Alice and Sara A burst of bright colours, Fill the air everywhere, No matter what we share, The Nazis never care, We all feel deep despair. Katie Blooming blues fill the ground Terrible times have been and gone All that remains are the sad memories of the time Tulips cover the ground, blocking out distant memories.

Class Four Book Drop Off

Class Four decided we needed some new books on our book shelf… We thought we would try a ‘BOOK DROP’, where anyone who has books at home (which they’ve read and don’t want anymore) would drop them in the book bin ready for the bookshelf! Amazingly, on the first day of our Book Drop, thirty books were brought in and have now been added to our book collection!

Thank you so much to all the lovely Class Four members (and their parents) who donated all the wonderful books!

What a great idea!

Class Five at Holburne Museum

On 15th November Class Five visited the Holburne museum. We listened to an interesting talk about ancient Greece and after that we got to do lots of different activities.

The first thing we did was walk around looking at interesting Greek artefacts. We also tried to draw a centaur and a satyr! Our second activity was to design a pattern for a clay pot. We also designed a Greek figure and then drew it on our worksheet.

Best of all, we were able to make our own clay dishes and decorate them. By Mateo and Miles

Class Five have basketball sessions every Friday

I shoot, and yes the ball slams into the net. It is Friday we’re doing basketball with our coach Matt. To begin with, we are dribbling the ball around the playground whilst our partner follows us. Now we’ve warmed up, we shall begin the match – it’s blue bibs vs yellow bibs. Suddenly, someone runs up to the net - slam dunks the bright orange ball - made by the company Wilson. They throw it, it circles the rim of the net, round and round and round. Will it go in, will it not!? “YES, uh no!” Now we’re are on the side line practicing shooting and passing, whilst green bibs vs non bibs are having their match. Everything is going so well in their match. Then we spot someone double dribble. Suddenly, we hear coach Matt say it’s the end of the lesson. It’s been great fun. By Matilda and Lucy

Class Six Geography lesson

On 4th of November Class Six went on an exciting geography lesson along the canal with Caroline Cook. We were very happy and excited when she came in. We also had another helper called Catrina Parry (Isaac’s mum) and Mrs Clarke, our teacher. Caroline brought us pencils and a piece of paper. She talked to us altogether about geography. On the paper there was a diagram for us to complete a survey, she told us that we had to write things that we thought were good about the canal on the left side and bad on the right. When we got to the canal we gave each thing on our list a tick to say if it was closer to the bad or good. After that we went onto the next place and did exactly the same again, in order to compare them. Finally we got back to school and talked about it saying what we thought the difference was! Caroline then gave us an envelope and in that envelope was a sheet with a proposal on. We had to read out what they said to each other. Mine was to put wildlife in the canal and Fergus’s was to build a park and canal ride. We had to debate about why we should do each thing. It was a tough call but a group promoting a café won! Then we asked questions about each other’s proposals. People asked tough questions! Unfortunately Caroline had to leave after that but we had great fun and would love to do it again.

Year 6 Maths Challengers

On Thursday 24th November 2016, six children from Bathampton Primary School (Year 6) were invited to attend a maths challenge at Monkton Prep School. The children chosen were Bertie, Maria, Harry, Ollie, Beatrice and Miranda. Maria’s mum very kindly offered to take everyone so we all went in her blue minivan!! Monkton was very big and could hold around twelve schools, there were roughly one hundred people taking part in the maths challenge. Mrs Clarke came with us and was also a marker There were: word problems, finding value and countdown. Harry and Ollie’s total was 155; Bertie and Maria’s total was 135 in the hexagon half. Bea and Miranda’s total was 145 in the nonagon half. We really enjoyed it and we hope we go to another maths challenge. By Bertie and Harry

A Poem by Amelie

The City Centre The cars blurted out smoke, puffing out to

the atmosphere. Lights dancing across the dirty floor, as sunny

yellow taxies whizz past. Chaos rushed down the doorways into the

bright night sky. Bill boards attract customers as skyscraper’s

salute like soldiers. Warmth inside chaotic bus shelters while

giants flowed through the reflections. At last the busy atmosphere died down, lights flickered, bill boards twitched down piece by

piece.

Year 6 football recount

In Year 6 we have been given a new coach for our football team. He is called James Gray. Our new coach seems very keen to get us playing in proper matches. The football team has already played in a game and a short tournament. When we arrived at our first match we were feeling very excited! We were playing against a St. Saviours team and we knew they were a good team. When James Grey finally gave us our positions we were keen to just get on with the game! When the whistle blew for the first half we all charged forward to get the ball. My friend Gabriel was on the pitch, but I was a substitute so I was cheering my team on. It was a challenging first half and we did, unfortunately concede a goal. In the five minute break James gave a brief talk about what we did well and what to improve on. In a few minutes we were back on the pitch. This time my friend and I were playing. I thought we played much better in the second half, but in the end the scores was 2:0. A week later, feeling a little down-struck, we went into a tournament. This time Gabriel was on the bench and I was starting up front. We only scored one goal, but we still got the win. Annoyingly, in the second match where we both played it was 1:0 to them. Our last match was against our rivals St Saviours. We put up a good fight, and managed to snatch a draw! We love football, and are looking forward to our next match with James Gray our amazing coach. By Charlie Hedges and Gabriel Adams-Wainwright

We also took part in the Bath & Keynsham Football Tournament which took place on Monday 7th November at the Odd Down 4G pitch. The practice paid off as we got to the final of the Plate competition.

All of the team were given a medal for reaching the final.

Class Three Big Run

Class Three went to St Mark’s School recently for a fun run. Noah said “I enjoyed doing all the activities, especially the corner relay”. Jake said “I really liked the circle relay. We had to work really hard as a team”

Kate’s Silver

Congratulations to Kate Trott and her team, representing the South West, who won Silver at a national gym competition recently. Kate is currently 24th in GB in her age group.

Road Safety and the Big Walk

Thank you to the Safe Routes team who helped plan the Walk to School week. All classes took part in the Big Walk on Tuesday 29th November. Each class went on a walk through the village or surrounding area. The weather was not ideal but they were undeterred. Thank you also to the many parents who came and supported the event.

The event was also to encourage children to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Well done to everyone who joined in!

Cycling Ms Ovigne was very impressed by the cycle training her class have been doing. She thought that the children had really got a lot out of the experience, especially the less confident cyclists. ‘Wendy has done a fantastic job and has been incredibly flexible, especially on rainy days. She always has a smile on her face and makes the whole experience really positive’.

True Grit Mrs Cox was really impressed by the attitude shown by our older children towards the new and more challenging Tables Milestone 4. She wrote These werethe first tests following our review. The results for the new Milestone 4 are veryimpressivewith20 childrenpassing! Theyhad toanswer 60 questions in total andscore at least54/60. I asked the children's opinion after theirtestsanditwasactuallyverypositive.Theyfelt60questions were a challenge and itwould be arealsense ofachievement if they passed. Theyenjoyed it!! I feel very proud of theway they allhandledthetest. As always we encourage children to take a steady approach to Milestones. They help build resilience as well as teach crucial mathematical skills. Well done to everyone whether they passed this time or not. Trying hard is our only expectation!

House Points The House points for this term at the point of going to press are Heron House 160 points, Kingfisher House 129, Mallard House 168 and Swan House 169. Well done to every child who has gained a house point! Every House Point represents an act of kindness or courtesy and helped make the school a happier place.

Anxiety is in the News There has been a recent report in the news about the number of children who suffer from anxiety. It is helpful for any modern parent to have strategies to help their child or children when times are challenging. We are very fortunate in having an excellent School Nurse and Clare Squires is always keen to help. She is also putting on a talk on Tuesday 31st January between 2.00 and 3.00 for all Bathampton parents who are interested. See below Have you got a child that worries a lot? Do they fret about everyday issues, world events or friendships? You are not alone! Do you need help knowing what to say or putting in effective strategies at home? If yes, our school nurse Clare Squires is on hand to help, spending an hour with lots of ideas and strategies that may help you.

School Community

Watch out for The Secret Life of Puppies, which is currently being shown on Channel 5 Monday at 9pm. Bea Ritchen’s puppy Dakin was filmed visiting the school this term. We understand that the episode with Bea’s puppy in it will be shown in the New Year. Dakin is also on the cover of the book associated with the programme. What a lovely looking puppy!

Incidentally could dog owners please keep their dogs away from the entrance and make sure that they are under control at all times. Thanks.

Guinea pigs need your help!

This year, our school guinea pigs need your help. If you have any spare cage carriers or old animal toys please could you donate them to the school? On Tuesdays and Thursdays, if you are on the rota, you can come along to have a go at cuddling them and feeding them! Bramble, Hazel and Willow need lots of love and lots of entertainment, they need your help. By Hattie, Katie,Theodora, Hannah and Isabella School Guinea Pig Monitor

A huge thank you to the Friends They have given each class £219 for books and the teachers have enjoyed filling some gaps. The Friends also raised £400 at the Bonfire Social on Friday 4th November for the school.

Santa Run

Laurie, Kit and Henry Nash ran a 6K Santa dash for Dorothy house recently. James Nash ran with them. Congratulations to the boys.

Could you be a Better Reading Partner and make a real difference to a child? This is the most effective scheme we have seen for helping children become confident readers. The Better Reading Partnership scheme was developed by Bradford Local Authority in 1996 and is based on the Reading Recovery Programme pioneered by Marie Clay in New Zealand. Children make an incredible average gain of six months in ten weeks. If you could find 20-30 minutes first thing in the morning after dropping children to school, or 20-30 minutes before pick-up in the afternoon we would be keen to have your help. We are always keen to have volunteer readers and those who are able to helping with BRP. We are very grateful to all those who come in on a regular basis to listen to readers. They are unsung heroes and make a real difference!

Jobs @ Bathampton

As this Chronicle article last year showed a Crossing Patrol Officer was needed. They still are! This might be an ideal job for a retired person who would like to be at the centre of things. If you know anyone who might be suitable why not mention it to them? SMSA (Lunchtime Supervisor) Needed for January. We are very keen indeed to recruit a new person for as many days as possible. Please consider this rewarding role!

Old Friends

It’s always nice when ex-pupils get in touch. Here is a letter from Haley Borg who is enjoying life in Sweden. Hi! It's been a year since I moved back to Sweden and I am very happy here but I miss all my friends in Bath a lot. I am blessed to have seen them during visits both to Sweden and in UK. I am now a first grader here in Sweden which feels a bit strange. I have got great friends in my class. We spend a lot of time outdoors and in our schedule during wintertime we have fun things as ice skating, ice fishing, skiing and snow mobile. During summer we have our lessons in the forest or by the lake. I can't wait to visit Bathampton again in the spring and I hope you are all well. I often tell my class about my school in UK and teachers and my classmates always wants to hear what it is like at Bathampton. Lots of love from Haley Borg

BATH FOODBANK

10th December 2016 Dear Paul, We are writing to thank you for the contribution that your school made to the harvest Foodbank collection this term. The school collections, this autumn, have resulted in us having a well-stocked warehouse, which is especially important at this time of year when the demand is likely to increase throughout the winter months. Please convey our thanks to your pupils, for the wonderful contribution that they have made to helping people who would otherwise have been hungry, having no food for themselves or their families. With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Yours sincerely, Tim & Sue Harris (Schools Co-ordinators for the Bath Foodbank)

Poppy Thank You
