Dear parents,

The community support at Copacabana Public School never ceases to

amaze me! In light of recent events in schools involving dangerous trees,

every school is now required to get an annual arborist inspection, at cost

to the school. However, we have not had to pay that this year as Richard

Spillane from “Tree Surgery” has kindly donated his services to complete

our inspection and annual report. Thank you Richard.

The amazing community support does not stop there though. As you may

know, the school is aiming to enhance its technology and ensure we are

forging ahead in providing 21st Century education. We had a 3year plan

for this to happen but this plan has been significantly shortened thanks to

an unbelievable donation of $50, 000 from a family at the school! This

will allow us to purchase approximately 90 laptops for students in

Years 3-6. It also allows the school to put its money into the purchase of

30 more iPads for K-2. The school can’t thank this family enough for such a

generous donation. Another fine example of how our community works

together for the benefit of our precious children.

School Sport

Well done to Zane who represented

the Southern Central Coast PSSA at the Sydney

North Tennis Trials on Tuesday.

Good luck to all the students who will be

representing Copacabana PS at the SCCPSSA Zone

Swimming Carnival at Woy Woy next Tuesday.

Weekend Sport

Well done to all the students who competed at the

NSW Surf Lifesaving Age Championships at

Blacksmiths Beach last weekend. A special mention

to Kaiden, Sam, Cooper and Bailey who got 6th in

the U10 Boys’ Sprint Relay.

Good luck to Nicolas who is heading to St Louis,

Missouri to play Ice Hockey in the 2017 Friendship

Games. Nicolas is part of the NSW Representative

team that is touring the USA. Enjoy Nicolas!

If any students have some amazing sporting results at a

Central Coast, State or National level, make sure to write

them down and come and let me know so I can spread their

achievements throughout the school community.

Mr Chris Mensforth

Sport Enthusiast

The Copa P&C AGM was held on Tuesday 7th March and we’d like to thank everyone who attended the meeting. Special mention goes to the people who accepted the following positions: President – Jo Fraser Vice Presidents – Matt Barrett and Charlotte Morgan Treasurer – Katie Austin Secretary – Lauren Gencur Uniform – Linda Hartwell Fundraising – Charlotte Morgan Canteen – Kirsten Walter will continue as the Canteen Manager supported by Gemma Colreavy, Lucy Wenzke and Jessica Mulcahy General – Michelle Griffiths and Amy Prentis

A massive thank you goes to the committee from

last year. Their time, support and dedication to the

school community was outstanding.

The main aim of the P&C is fundraising for our

beautiful school. Mr Thomas has a vision for a 21st

Century learning environment including such things

as laptops, iPads and innovative furniture, which our

students and teachers deserve. The P&C and Mr

Thomas are mindful of financial pressures on

families and recognise the additional school costs

which invariably occur throughout the year.

However, due to the nature of funding for public

schools, Copacabana Public School relies very much

on fundraising to keep things, like technology and

home reading books, up-to-date. The P&C are

evaluating the number and scheduling of fundraising

events and welcome any feedback from the school

community. Please remember that everyone is

welcome to come along to our meetings held on the

first Tuesday of the month at 6.30pm in the

staffroom! If you can’t make our meetings feel free

to touch base with any of the committee members

or email [email protected]

TERM 1 / WEEK 7 Young

Leaders Day

On Friday the 3rd of March, Copacabana’s school leaders

went down to Sydney for the Young Leaders Day. We

travelled by bus and when we got to the convention centre

in Darling Harbour, there were over 4,500 young leaders

inside the centre. We had a great day learning about all the

different types of speakers that came to talk with us, what

their life was about, all their adventures and struggles and

how they had dealt with them. The hosts for the day were

Gemma Knight who is an actor and Scott Tweedie from

Prank Patrol. Gemma and Scott showed their leadership

skills by leading us through the actions of an inside

rainstorm. The first speaker was Sam Skinner and she was

the boss of Young Leaders Day and was telling us how she

became a leader. The second speaker was Sam Webb. He is

from the reality TV show named Australian Survivor. He told

us all that he lost his best friend so started a program called

‘livin’. He also talked about how ‘livin’ changed his life. The

third speaker was Jade Hameister. Jade was the youngest

person to conquer Mount Everest base camp, was the

youngest person to ski to the North Pole and participated in

and still competes in triathlons. The fourth speaker was

Jordan Nguyen. He told us about the time he made a

wheelchair that you could move and steer with your mind.

He told us about a young boy named Riley who could not

move, speak or eat without help. What Riley really wanted

to do was drive. So Jordan designed a radio wave head piece

that would allow Riley to look where he wanted to go and

the buggy went to the location. The fifth and final speaker

for the day was Barry Conrad who is an actor. Barry told us

about his childhood life and that he was born into a musical

family. Barry is a fantastic singer, and at the end of the day

he sang for us. After all the amazing stuff we had

experienced at the Young Leaders Day, we headed home on

the bus.

By Gemma – School Captain

Young Leaders Day,

On Friday the 3rd March, the 8 prefects, school

captains and Mr Thomas went to the National

Young Leaders Day. The theme for this year

was Imagination and Together We Can. The

school leaders and Mr Thomas listened to the

inspiring stories from the leaders Sam Skinner,

Sam Webb, Jade Hameister, Jordan Nguyen,

Barry Conrad and the hosts Scott Tweedie and

Jemma Knight. The leaders had a great time

there, listening to the leadership values and

hearing the very talented speakers.

Copacabana Public School represented our

school in a great manner and we left with big

smiles on our faces.

Teacher Profile

Hello to the Copacabana community and thank

you for welcoming me so kindly into your

school.

My name is Allison McCarthy and I’m

extremely fortunate to be the classroom

teacher of 2/3M for 2017. Term One has taken

off with a great start. I’ve loved getting to

know each and every one of my students, the

fantastic staff of Copa and all the other

children at school.

I moved to the Central Coast 11 years ago from

Manly NSW. I now live in Wamberal with my

husband, 3 kids and our beagle puppy, Megs.

We love our life on the coast and couldn’t see

ourselves ever moving back to the hustle and

bustle of Sydney!

On weekends you’ll find me going to all my

kids’ sporting events including nippers, netball

and soccer. To relax, I love taking Megs down

to Wambie beach for long walks. I also love

catching up with the many friends I’ve made

since living on the coast.

I feel very privileged to now be part of this

wonderful school and community.
