ACTIVITY INFORMATIONCOURSE DESCRIPTION

Disorders of the musculoskeletal systemare the primary reason that individualsseek medical attention in the United States; therefore, a fundamental knowledge of musculoskeletal disorders is necessary for practicing primary care providers.

The fi eld of orthopaedics, however, is rapidly advancing which presents a challenge for primary care providers to keep pace with advancements. The goal of this programis to provide primary care physicians withan overview of some of the most common disorders of the musculoskeletal system that they frequently encounter in their practice, and to off er them an opportunity to sharpen their skills in recommending surgicaltechniques or non-surgical treatment plans that will restore function and range ofmotion to their patients.

After the didactic presentations, there will be breakout sessions for demonstrations and hands-on practice of the various techniques discussed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

• Assess emergency orthopaedic conditions and implement diagnostic and therapeutic decisions to better manage patients and improve outcomes

• Perform common orthopaedic techniques such as injections for the carpal tunnel; trigger fi nger and tennis elbow problems

• Perform aspiration of a joint, cortisone injection of a joint and splinting and physical therapy modalities in the offi ce

• Describe the role of advance imaging technology in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions
