Moving Beyond the "Textbook": Creative Use of Authentic Resources

Diane Ceo-DiFrancesco

Do you find yourself tied to a textbook? Ohio's New Model Curriculum suggests courses, units

and lessons based on communicative themes. Moving beyond the textbook more effectively

integrates authentic resources as well as the interests and needs of learners. This presentation

engages participants in the implementation of interactive communication tasks and pedagogically

effective teaching materials which exploit authentic resources.

Using Google Classroom to Create Student Portfolios

Emily Hazzard

Utilizing Google Classroom (part of Google Drive), this workshop explains how to set up a

Google Classroom, and how to collect student data. This is a wonderful resource for teachers

who are working through SLOs and IPAs as a way to keep a portfolio for each student and track

progress. And it's free! Open to all languages and levels.

Beginning Teacher Roundtable

Lesley Chapman

This session is an opportunity for beginning language teachers (years 1-4) to sit together and

talk about what works, what doesn't, and why. It's a chance to share ideas and build a

camaraderie among other beginning teachers in Ohio.

Create Your Go-To List of World Language Resources!

Kathy Shelton ALL STAR PRESENTER-2014

Are you overwhelmed by the overabundance of online resources available? Do you wish you had

a quick Go-To list of websites that fit your needs? Come to this collaborative session and create

your own list of Go-To websites. Participants should be ready to share the names of your favorite

websites for authentic resources, IPAs, music, culture, readings, videos, grammar and vocab

practice, or any other website that you can't live without!

Writing Robust Rubrics for Foreign Language Assessment: A DIY Guide

Carolyn Shemwell Kaplan

Providing students with comprehensible rubrics is essential to ensuring their success on

assessments and fairness when grading. Writing rubrics is a skill that can be improved through application of guidelines and practice. This interactive session will describe strategies for writing

or revising FL rubrics. Participants will leave the session with tools to create rubrics that use

operational terms and have discernable levels of performance.

Service Learning: Cultural Exchange between L2 Learners & Heritage Speakers

Kayla Schaub

College-level French students work with high school Francophone immigrants to improve

communication skills by developing engaging pedagogical materials for adolescent heritage

speakers. This exchange allows heritage learners to share conversational expertise with L2

learners while practicing the formal written language, and L2 learners gain educational

experience and verbal skills. Learn how to enhance your language program with a similar

project. This project was specifically designed for university and high school students, but can be

applied to any age group.

Global Giving: Creating a culture of philanthropy

Carrie Toth 2015 CENTRAL STATES TEACHER OF THE YEAR

ME! ME! ME! It is the mantra of our teenage years! We are absorbed in our daily lives and

disconnected from the idea of global outreach. How can we open our students' minds to the

world outside of their classroom and use our target language to teach them sympathy for

others? In this session, we will explore ways to break down classroom walls and create a GLOBAL

classroom filled with opportunities to reach out! Participants will learn about 3 types of giving

opportunities: online giving, guest speaker giving, and product giving. This workshop will feature

examples of non-profit organizations and time for brainstorming/ideas from the audience.

Participants will learn how documentaries, websites, twitter feeds, and more can engage

students in finding solutions for the problem at hand. In addition, participants will hear about a

variety of fundraising ideas and will suggest some of their own. Participants are encouraged to

bring an iPad or mobile device that will allow them to do a quick search for charities of interest!

FRIDAY SESSION 2 9:00-9:50

Using Technology to Prepare for the AP Language and Culture Presentational

Milton Alan Turner

Technology can provide students with practice in Interpretive Reading, Interpretive Listening,

and Presentational Writing skills. In this session, participants will examine social media

(Facebook pages and Twitter feeds), iPad apps, and web sites for international media outlets.

Proficiency v. Performance: What's the Difference and Why Do I Need to Know

OHIO ALL STAR--2014

Martha Halemba and Rebecca Wiehe

Assessing students can certainly be tricky, especially these days when the results seem to

matter more than ever. What exactly should we be assessing? What do our evaluations

communicate to our students, their parents, and our supervisors? What should they

communicate? This session will focus on these questions as well as the common confusion

between assessing for performance versus assessing for proficiency. When should we do each

and why?

Are you looking for ways to present Latin grammatical forms within a cultural, communicative

context stressing all four language skills? This session will help you to accomplish these goals.

The presenter will engage participants in an interactive story-telling lesson, developing a

grammar presentation with extended listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.

Participants will share thoughts and ideas concerning the procedure.

Navigating the edTPA

Rebecca Chism and Kimbery Talentino

The Educational Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) is designed as a preservice

assessment to answer the question: "Is a new teacher ready for the job?" It requires teacher

candidates to follow guidelines in three major categories: planning, instructing, and assessing

student learning. The objective of this session is to provide guidance to those who work directly

with teacher candidates and to share examples from recent graduates.

In Languages We Mean Business: Work Opportunities for Your Students

Formative Assessment Techniques for the WL Classroom: Enhancing Student Learning

Dr. Bryan R. Drost

Wiliam (2014) asserts that formative assessment is a researched-based technique that can

improve student achievement, often in fact doubling the speed of student learning. Formative

assessment is any activity that a classroom teacher uses to plan instruction, provide the learner

with specific feedback, help the student learn content, and improve learning strategies (Drost,

2012). This presentation will provide an overview on what formative assessment is and how it

differs from traditional summative assessment practices, as well as discuss and model several

formative assessment techniques using technology that can be used by both beginning and

veteran teachers alike. Participants are encouraged to bring an electronic device, such as a smartphone or tablet, to experience some formative assessment techniques.
