1. GENERAL

This operating manual belongs to the A85 sweeping vehicle. The purpose of the manual is a safe use and maintenance of the sweeper vehicle and the manual must be available for the operators at all times.

1.1. Purpose of the sweeper

The A85 sweeper vehicle is used for cleaning paved surfaces.

1.2. Operators

In this manual "the operator" refers to: anyone who comes into contact with the A85 sweeper or any of its components under operational circumstances. The organization itself should ensure that every operator is sufficiently qualified to work with this type of vehicle and is capable of taking the stipulations and safety aspects into account. A clear distinction is made between two groups of operators.

- “The driver” is the person who actually operates the vehicle in preparation of or during the production process (sweeping process). The driver must be older than 18 years of age and be aware of his responsibilities.

- ”The technician” is the person who repairs or services the vehicle. The technician must be qualified and trained in technical actions. It is mandatory that the technician has a thorough technical understanding and is able to read technical drawings.

The driver and the technician must be instructed properly before operating or carrying out maintenance on the vehicle. The initial instructions are given by specialists from Tennant N.V. An exception is made if the organization in question already operates several vehicles of the same type, or has sufficient in-house expertise. Tennant N.V. cannot be held responsible for work carried out by an inadequately instructed or unqualified operator.

1.3. Emission data

The hydraulic system of the A85 sweeper vehicle contains hydraulic oil and is powered by a diesel engine, which complies with the Euro-5 legislation The battery of the A85 sweeper vehicle contains battery acid.

1.5. Functional description

The A85 sweeper vehicle is used for cleaning paved surfaces. The refuse in front of the vehicle is collected beneath the vehicle by two brushes. There it is sucked through the suction mouth and transported to the dirt hopper. The suction force in the suction mouth is created by under-pressure in the dirt hopper. There is a fan on the dirt hopper. It forces the air out of the dirt hopper and releases it to the environment through the air extraction duct in the top of the dirt hopper. A labyrinth inside changes the direction of the air stream several times, thereby reducing the noise. The refuse is moistened in the suction mouth so that it precipitates onto the floor of the dirt hopper and cannot be blown out again. The power supply for all the motorized components of the sweeper vehicle is supplied by a hydraulic system. This hydraulic system is in turn powered by the diesel engine. This type of power supply ensures that the diesel engine can maintain a constant engine speed and that all other actions (steering, linear or rotating) are generated by regulating the hydraulic fluid flow. For instance, the driving action, the steering mechanism, the hydraulic cylinders, the sweeping unit and the suction fan are all driven hydraulically. Only the driving speed and fan speed are directly affected by the power and speed of the diesel engine.

2.6. Safety regulations for transport

Loading the vehicle for transportation » Only loading platforms that are able to support the load and are sufficiently stable may be

used. The ramp gradient must be less than the maximum climbing capability of the vehicle (15%).

» Prevent the vehicle from overturning or sliding off during loading. » Protect the vehicle from rolling off, shifting or overturning on a transport vehicle. Towing the vehicle See Chapter 8.

Not observing the regulations above is considered gross negligence. Tennant N.V. can not be held liable for any damage if you do not observe the safety regulations and measures mentioned above.

2.7. Safety provisions

The vehicle is fitted with a number of automatic and manual safety provisions to guarantee the safety of people and the vehicle.

2.7.1. Automatic provisions

these safety provisions are activated automatically and must not be neutralized in any way.

» Automatic brake-light system Turned on as soon as the vehicle decelerates. » Sensor mat in driver’s seat Disconnects the brushes and the driving function when the driver is not sitting on the seat. » Reverse alarm Acoustic signal that can be heard when the vehicle reverses. » Audible alarm Acoustic signal that can be heard when the dirt hopper is tipped, lowered or when the rear door opens or closes. » Warning lamp Starts flashing when the dirt hopper starts tipping and continues to flash until the safety support are in place beneath the dirt hopper. When the safety support is removed, the warning light starts flashing again until the dirt hopper is lowered completely. » Hydraulic pressure switch in the tipping cylinders Ensures that above a certain weight the dirt hopper cannot be tipped unless the rear door is open.

TENNANT A85

» Four independent hydraulic pumps To ensure a good functioning of the hydraulic system, it is carried out by four independent pumps. » Over-pressure safeguard on all hydraulic systems » Hose-rupture safeguards The hydraulic tipping cylinders on a standard machine and the lifting cylinders on a high dump machine are fitted with hose-rupture safeguards. » Hydraulic system that ensures that the sweeping unit is blocked when raised The blocking is only removed when the sweeping unit is operated to be lowered. So the sweeping unit cannot be lowered while the vehicle is driving. » Hydraulically-powered steering mechanism The vehicle can still be steered if the diesel engine should break down. The steering mechanism does offer more resistance, but the vehicle can be steered without damaging the system. » Electrical switch on top of the chassis rear (high dump only) The front cylinders always have to extent fully before the rear cylinders may extent when lifting the hopper. An electric switch on top of the chassis (rear) enables is switched when the hopper reaches a certain angle because of the front cylinders. The rear cylinders extend then. There is only one button on the remote control to lift the hopper. » Electrical switch on the rear door (high dump only) The rear door needs to be fully opened before the push plate is enabled to move. An electric switch indicates when the rear door is fully opened and prevents the movement of the push plate. » Security of push plate (high dump only) The push plate moves in when the rear door is closed. This is to prevent the rear door from coming into contact with the push plate. » Electrical switch on top of the chassis rear (high dump only) The rear of the hopper always has to come down first when lowering the hopper. An electrical switch registers when the rear sides of the hooper are at their lowest position, which is when the front of the hopper can be lowered. There is only one button on the remote control to lower the hopper. » Speed limit with raised hopper (high dump only) When the rear of the hopper is not completely lowered the driving speed of the machine is limited to 5 km/hr. An electrical switch registers when the rear of the hopper is in its lowered position and enables the machine to drive the normal speed. » Electrical tilt sensor (high dump only) The hopper can not be lifted when the machine is not parked on a level and solid surface. The electrical tilt sensor disables the lifting of the hopper when the machine is tilted more than 4 degrees either side ways or front to rear.

3.10. Joystick operation of the 3rd brush (optional) (fig. 2, no. 18) This joystick operates the third brush. The third brush has two swivel points, each with a separate swivel motor. The position of the joystick determines the rotation of the swivel motors in the horizontal plane. Which of the two swivel motors is operated, depends on the direction in which the joystick is moved:

to the left: turns the first brush arm anti-clockwise. to the right: turns the first brush arm clockwise. to the front turns the second brush arm anti-clockwise. to the back: turns the second brush arm clockwise. diagonally: both swivels will turn simultaneously, making the

third extremely flexible.

4. VEHICLE OPERATION

Always observe the safety regulations and measures described in section 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.7.

Before entering traffic, the operator should be sufficiently familiarized with the handling of the sweeper vehicle. This applies particularly to the large steering radius (70°) and the hydraulic drive mechanism. After sufficient practice with the sweeper vehicle the operator may participate in traffic as long as local traffic regulations are observed. Drive carefully at all times, particularly when driving up or down gradients. The driving style should always be adapted to prevailing conditions.

All maneuvers should be stopped if traffic conditions do not allow for their execution.

In connection with safety: o the vehicle must have sufficient lights, and o the warning beacons must be switched on.

4.1. Before driving

Before driving the vehicle the “checkpoints for sweeping” in section 9.1 should be studied.

» The driver seat must be adjusted to the driver’s posture. This is to improve seating

comfort and prevent physical complaints. For the adjustment options please refer to the original operating manual of the chair (supplied).

» The mirrors should be adjusted manually so that the driver can observe the following

from his seat: - The brushes must be visible in the top outside mirrors on both sides of the vehicle. - Via the rear-view mirrors on both sides of the vehicle it must be possible to

observe traffic in the immediate vicinity of the sides and rear of the vehicle.

4.2. Starting the vehicle

The vehicle can only be started when: the driver is seated on the driver's seat, the hand brake has been engaged, and the forward / reverse selector is in neutral (N).

1) Occupy the driver's seat. 2) Place your right foot beside the pedal. 3) Put the forward / reverse selector in neutral (N) (see paragraph 3.2). 4) Apply the parking brake. 5) Check that all functions are deactivated. 6) Turn the ignition key to the 1st position.

The glow plug indicator lamp lights up. 7) Wait until the indicator light is switched off. 8) Then turn the ignition key to the next position and release it as soon as the diesel engine is

running. 9) Rev the engine briefly and then release it.

The dynamo indicator lamp is extinguished and the diesel engine is idling.

4.3. Driving the vehicle

The forward / reverse selector is still in neutral (N). The engine speed is stationary, ±800 revs/min. 1) Check that the sweeping unit is raised (fig. 6, no. 6). 2) Release the hand brake. 3) Select the desired driving direction with the forward/reverse selector (see section 3.2). The operating functions required for driving the vehicle are given below: Driving Pressing down the accelerator pedal (fig. 2, no. 14) will move the vehicle slowly forward, whereby the engine speed of the diesel engine will gradually increase. The speed can be regulated by the extent to which the pedal is pressed. Braking The vehicle’s hydraulic drive system ensures that the vehicle will gradually stop when the accelerator pedal is released. When the foot brake (fig. 2, no. 17) is used, the vehicle immediately brakes forcefully.

The operator must continuously observe the traffic situation and adapt his own situation and actions to it. He must ensure that his attention is not distracted from the traffic.

The mirrors, indicators and lights must be used properly.

4.5. Front axle air suspension

The electronics ensure that the vehicle remains at an equal driving height in a loaded as well as unloaded condition. This is done by means of a height regulator on the front axle. The machine can be raised at the front in order to avoid obstacles. Engage this function by activating switch no. 17 on the middle dashboard, see chapter 3.5. You can use this function in two ways.

1. Hold switch, turn off ignition lock. The vehicle remains in its highest position. 2. Hold switch. As long as the switch is activated, the machine will remain in its highest

position. When the switch is no longer activated, the vehicle will automatically return to its neutral position.

When the vehicle is in its highest position, it may not be driven any faster than 10 km/hour. When it has been standing still for a long period of time, pressure must be built up in the system first, so the machine returns to its neutral situation, before driving with it.

4.6. Switching off the vehicle

The hand brake must always be engaged when the vehicle is switched off. Otherwise the vehicle could start moving of its own accord.

1) Bring the vehicle to a halt:

5. THE SWEEPING PROCEDURE

Always observe the safety regulations and measures described in section 2.2, 2.4 and 2.7.

Sweeper vehicles are mainly used to clean public roads. The type of refuse usually consists of litter, sand, grit and leaves. The dust that develops during sweeping is settled by continuously spraying it with water. The quality of the sweeping results is largely determined by the adjustments and settings. The adjustment of the brushes depends on various factors (see also section 9.2.2 and 9.2.3). When selecting the driving speed and the brush speed, prevailing conditions should be taken into account. The joystick control of the sweeping unit and the wide steering angle make the vehicle highly maneuverable during the sweeping procedure. When sweeping, always adapt the maneuvering to the prevailing (traffic) conditions. In due course, the operator will become sufficiently experienced to assess the conditions accurately and adapt the sweeping techniques accordingly.

5.1. Sweeping conditions

The settings of vehicle's functions must be based on prevailing conditions. These settings can be adjusted while sweeping, as long as the vehicle and the sweeping procedure remain under control and the operator's attention is not distracted from the traffic.

Adjustment of the sweeping unit and/or 3rd-brush must always be done very carefully. No obstacles or people should be within the danger zone.

Road speed While sweeping, the road speed must be adapted to the prevailing conditions. A maximum speed of 7 km/h is recommended. During sweeping the vehicle is set to a maximum speed of ± 12 km/h forward and ± 8 km/h in reverse at an engine speed of ± 1300 revs/min. The engine speed during sweeping is set by means of the speed regulator “engine speed / fan” at the top of the dashboard (fig. 7). The accelerator pedal therefore only influences the driving speed. The separate reverse pedal (optional) to the left of the steering column (fig. 2, no. 3), can be used to reverse, but only during sweeping. This pedal works independently of the forward / reverse selector. As long as the pedal is depressed, the vehicle reverses.

A sudden switch to reverse at normal sweeping speed could cause hazard to traffic approaching from the rear.

Suction power The vehicle's suction power is determined by the diesel engine's speed. Under standard conditions and at engine speeds between 1300-1500 revs/min. wear, fuel consumption and noise levels will be reasonably aligned to the vehicle's performance. Suction mouth Larger pieces of rubbish or large amounts of leaves can be sucked in through the front of the suction mouth which can be opened by means of the joystick (fig. 6, no. 4).

Keep in mind that the suction power is reduced when the mouth is open. If the suction mouth is blocked (by twigs, for example), it can be unblocked by switching off the fan (fig. 6, no. 8), drawing the suction mouth upwards (fig. 6, no. 6) and reversing a small distance to check that the blockage has been removed. Brush speed The brush speed must be adapted to prevailing sweeping conditions, such as: the litter situation, the surface or the road speed.

When the brush speed has to be adjusted, the vehicle must first be brought to a halt. This must be done in order to keep track of the traffic situation.

The brush speed can be regulated by means of the turning knob at the lower right corner in the cabin below the windshield (fig. 2, no. 13). The brush speed can be turned down to 0. Select an appropriate brush speed, but not too high.

High brush speeds lead to increased brush wear and can cause objects, like small stones, to be flung away.

Water pressure The water circuit can be switched between high and low pressure. Under normal conditions low pressure is sufficient to keep the suction mouth clean and prevent accumulation of dust. The higher pressure can be switched on (temporarily) under extreme circumstances or when the suction mouth is blocked.

By means of switch no. 14 on the central cab switchboard (fig. 6) the low or high pressure can be selected.

Sprayer bar

The sprayer bar must be activated in dry conditions to prevent dust from developing (fig. 6, no. 13). Either the right-hand side or both sides can be sprayed. This selection can be made by closing the valve on the sprayer bar (spray only on the right) or opening it (spray on both sides).

Excessive use of water should be avoided during sweeping! The amount of water in the vehicle is limited.

Inspection hatches The dirt hopper has inspection hatches on both sides. These hatches can be opened to put pieces of refuse that are too big for the suction mouth (for instance branches) into the dirt hopper. It is recommended to switch the suction fan off before opening these hatches (fig. 6, no. 8). Sweeping techniques Sweeping techniques can help the driver to: obtain good sweeping results, and carry out the work at an effective speed. Low driving speeds ensure that the maneuverability of the vehicle is used optimally.

Excessive steering maneuvers result in increased tire wear. Inner corners Inner corners can be thoroughly cleaned by using the mobile sweeping unit according (Technique A):

9) Switch off the work lights, if necessary.

10) Switch off the vehicle lights, if necessary.

5.4. Use of the manual suction unit (optional)

The A85 can be equipped with a manual suction unit. This can be used to suck up dirt manually. This unit can remain mounted on the vehicle, even if it is not used for a longer period of time. The manual suction unit can be used independently or in combination with the sweeper unit. If the manual suction unit is used in combination with the sweeper unit, the suction force is divided between the manual suction unit and the suction mouth. As a result suction is not very effective. Also, in this situation two operators must work with the machine. When all available suction force is needed for the manual suction unit, in other words when only the manual suction unit is used, the suction mouth has to be closed with the slide behind the cabin on the dirt hopper. For this purpose the dirt hopper has to be tipped to a height of 10 cm (see section 3.11). In this situation a single operator can be used. In contravention to the safety regulations described in section 2.2, this operator is allowed to leave the cabin while the fan and water pump are switched on.

Always ensure sufficient air displacement inside the hose to be able to transport the rubbish to the dirt hopper. Therefore do not hold the hose inside the rubbish, but just above it.

Always point the manual suction unit at the ground and never at persons.

5.5. Using the 3rd brush (optional)

The 3rd brush is located at the front of the vehicle. Adapt the driving and sweeping pattern to this brush attachment.

In order to achieve good sweeping results, the 3rd brush must always be used in combination with the brushes as described in section 5.1. Take the prevailing conditions into account when selecting the brush speed. When sweeping severely polluted areas, it is recommended to use a high brush speed and a low driving speed.

1) Follow the "Start sweeping" procedure (section 5.2), but do not drive off yet.

2) Bring the 3rd brush to the desired position with the joystick (see section 3.9)

3) Switch on the 3rd brush with the desired direction of rotation.

4) Lower the 3rd brush

5) Adjust the pressure of the 3rd brush to the surface (fig. 6, no. 2).

6) Adjust the angle of the 3rd brush.

7) Engage the sprayer in case of undesired dust clouds (fig. 6, no. 9).

8) Gently push in the accelerator.

The vehicle will move slowly forward.

After working with the 3rd brush:

- the brush must be raised and placed in front of the vehicle, - the sprayer must be switched off, and - the “Stop sweeping” procedure (section 5.3) must be carried out.

Good control of the third brush can only be realized through thorough training. Inexpert operation could cause damage to the vehicle and/or the third brush system and give rise to hazardous situations.

5.6. Emptying the dirt hopper

When the dirt hopper contains excess water, this can be drained off by opening the discharge opening (the folded-up rubber hose) on the right hand side of the vehicle.

5.6.1. Emptying a standard hopper

The operator must be absolutely sure that during tipping or lowering of the dirt hopper, and during opening or closing of the rear door no other persons are in the

vicinity of the vehicle.

If the operator has not ascertained this, every movement of the vehicle must be stopped. There is a risk that someone may become trapped between the dirt hopper and the frame or between the rear door and the hopper. or in the mesh inside the hopper. Injuries can also occur when the rear door hits people during opening or closing.

The unloading area must be hard and solid, it must be flat with a maximum

gradient of 2 degrees Never tip a filled dirt hopper without first having opened the rear door! If

the hopper is filled to such a degree that tipping with closed rear door could be unsafe, tipping is automatically blocked. To enable further tipping in this situation, the rear door must be opened first.

Tipping is prohibited when the vehicle is parked on a gradient! The vehicle may not be driven with a tipped hopper!

Tipping the hopper 1) Stop the machine on the unloading area as close as possible to the place where it has to

be emptied. 2) Apply the parking brake. 3) Remove the remote control from the bracket (see also section 3.11) 4) Use the key to unlock the remote control. 5) Stand well back to the right of the vehicle.

This affords the best overview of most of the vehicle. 6) Open the rear door completely. 7) Tip the hopper. 8) Allow the hopper to empty. 9) Lower the hopper again. 10) Connect the hosing-down hose (see chapter 6). 11) Clean the rear door seal. 12) Store the hosing-down hose. 13) Close the rear door and fasten the clamps completely. 14) Use the key to unlock the remote control. 15) Store the remote control inside the cabin.

7. USING THE MANUAL HYDRAULIC PUMP

On the right-hand side at the rear of the cabin a manual hydraulic pump is installed (fig. 35). In case of a malfunction of the diesel engine, this pump can be used to operate the following functions to bring the machine to the transport mode:

- open/close the rear door - tip/lower the hopper - sweeping unit up (brushes and suction mouth) - sweeping unit left/right - third brush movements

The handle to operate the manual pump is on the left-hand side of the passenger seat.

During normal use of the sweeper vehicle the red steering handle (A) must always be pointed at the pump handle of the hand pump (B), in other words: set to pump position I. In pump position II all hydraulic functions are cut.

1) Take the handle to operate the manual

pump and place it in the pump handle of the manual pump (B). B

9.2. Settings

For good sweeping results a correct setting of the following: the suction mouth, the brush angle, and the brush pressure is essential

9.2.1. Adjusting the suction mouth

The degree of suction power is influenced by the setting of the suction mouth. The distance between the suction mouth and the road surface is determined by the guide wheel attached to the suction mouth. With the guide wheel on the ground, this distance should be approx.:

- 35 mm at the front. - 15 mm at the back (see fig. 38).

he rubbers must connect properly and must not be worn to maintain good suction power.

TENNANT A85

When the brushes are set a forward angle, the rear of the brush does not touch the surface. This brings the rubbish in front of the suction mouth so that it does not revolve with the brush. The sideways angle is adjusted to the shape of the surface or the degree of brush wear. Some vehicle models are equipped with a hydraulic sideways adjustment which can be operated from the cabin.

If the sideways angle is too large, it will create space between the brush and the suction mouth, leaving a line of rubbish behind. This effect increases with increased brush wear.

9.3. Maintenance after sweeping

A number of fixed maintenance tasks must be carried out daily after sweeping is completed. For this maintenance work the hosing-down hose, the high-pressure lance (optional) or a high-pressure cleaner can be used. Chapter 6 contains a detailed description of the use of the hosing-down hose and the high-pressure lance (optional).

The hand brake must be engaged during cleaning of the vehicle. The doors, windows and see-through hatch of the cabin must be closed

during cleaning of the vehicle with the hosing-down hose, the high-pressure lance or high-pressure cleaner.

The engine compartment may only be cleaned when the engine is switched off. Therefore, the hosing-down hose and the high-pressure lance cannot be used for this purpose.

9.3.1. Suction mouth and suction hose

Clean the suction mouth and suction hose. Also clean the inside of the suction hose:

o Carry out the "Starting the vehicle" procedure (section 4.2) (engine speed ±1400 revs/min.).

o Temporarily switch on the suction fan and the water pump. o Clean the inside of the suction hose:

Maintain a sufficiently safe distance from the vehicle while the diesel engine is switched on.

11. INTEGRATED AIR CONDITIONING/HEATING SYSTEM

11.1. Setting the temperature of the heater (5P1) and the airco system (5P2)

Temperature setting heater (heater on: lamp out 1 on) Press set once. Go to 5P1 with the arrow keys. When 5P1 appears in the display, press “Set”. Adjust the temperature by pressing the up or down arrow keys. After the adjustment, press “Set”. Wait 15 seconds: the actual cabin temperature appears in the display. This completes the temperature setting for the heater. Temperature setting airco system (airco on: lamp out 2 on) Press set once. Go to 5P2 with the arrow keys. When 5P2 appears in the display, press “Set”. Adjust the temperature by pressing the up or down arrow keys. After the adjustment, press “Set”. Wait 15 seconds: the actual cabin temperature appears in the display. This completes the temperature setting for the airco.

Attention! » The heater and air co system only function when the blower has been switched on (fig. 5, no. 19). » To prevent the heater from switching on during warm periods, the heater temperature must be set lower than the temperature for the air co system. » If the cabin has been heated too strongly, the best thing to do is to open the window for a little while to allow the hottest air to escape. However, the best cooling is achieved when the windows are subsequently closed entirely. »The optimum difference between the inside and outside temperature lies between 4 and 6 degrees. A larger temperature difference may cause colds. » The adjustable outflow mouths can best be aimed at the source of heat or the window and not directly at the people inside the cabin. » The heating and air conditioning can be used simultaneously for a large part of the year. The air is then first dehumidified by the air co system and subsequently brought up to an agreeable temperature by the heater. This results in a very quick demisting of the windows, even when the people inside are wearing damp clothes. The setting should then be as follows: set the air co system 2° lower and the heater 2° higher than the inside temperature.

11.3. Maintenance of integrated air conditioning/heating system

An air conditioning system is practically maintenance-free.

To prevent problems, the following items need periodical attention: Activate the system at least once a week. Switch on the system when the engine speed is as low as possible. Weekly check the condenser for dirt and bent lamella that hamper the air flow. Clean the lamella against the air flow. Depending on use, regularly check:

- the tension and condition of the drive belt - the condition of the coolant hoses

Regularly check the filter inside the cabin and replace when necessary. Once a year exchange the dryer/filter (rear of cabin).
