Another Term

Well another term has come and gone and once again I’m shaking my head wondering how the days have flown by so quickly. It has been an amazing term of learning here at Templestowe Valley PS across all areas of the curriculum.

From individual and team success in a huge variety of sporting activities, to academic successes within and outside of the classroom, to celebrity status with not just one, but two appearances on national television, . . . the list is endless. And it all culminated in an amazing whole school celebration of the Arts in the Mary Poppins Jnr performances. Then of course we could list our “Days” – 100 Days of School, Book Dress-Up day, R U OK Day, Footy Day . . . Wow! I’m exhausted just reading the list. It has seriously been a fabulous term.

It couldn’t have happened without the commitment and dedication of an amazing group of educators and support staff. So much work is done behind the scenes to make everything happen for our students. I would sincerely like to thank and recognise our Templestowe Valley teachers, classroom ILA and the staff who work quietly behind the scenes to make the magic happen. I am so very proud of the work that they do and the care, support and education that they provide to your children.

Next term is revving up to be another exciting one. We have:

Our 50th Anniversary celebrations (there’s lots more about this further on)

Swimming – all students

Yr 5 & 6 student - Asian Experience

Yr 4 & 5 – Camp Woorabinda

Graduation

2020 Transition and Orientation – Preps & Yr 6

And then there’s all the learning still to come.

It’s going to be another fabulous term at Templestowe Valley PS. You don’t want to miss a minute of it!

From TVPS Assistant Principal – Rob Cretney

Children have the right to be safe and protected, including at school. Registered schools and other child-related organisations have an important responsibility for keeping children safe. Templestowe Valley Primary School has taken steps to protect children from abuse. Child abuse, and arrangements that allow it to occur, will not be tolerated. Templestowe Valley’s children deserve nothing less. Protecting children and young people from abuse is all of our responsibility.

Templestowe Valley is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. As part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Betrayal of Trust report, which found that more must be done to prevent and respond to child abuse in our community, there is a new regulatory landscape surrounding child safety, underpinned by the new Child Safe Standards.

The Child Safe Standards are compulsory minimum standards for all Victorian early childhood services and schools, to ensure they are well prepared to protect children from abuse and neglect. The Child Safe Standards strengthen existing approaches to preventing and responding to child abuse and aim to create a culture where protecting children from abuse is part of everyday thinking and practice.

The Child Safe Standards are:

Standard 1: Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety

Standard 2: A child safety policy or a statement of commitment to child safety

Standard 3: A Child Safety Code of Conduct

Standard 4: Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child abuse

Standard 5: Procedures for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse

Standard 6: Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse

Standard 7: Strategies to promote child participation and empowerment.

Each year, at their first meeting, the TVPS School Council and staff endorses the Rationale of the TVPS Commitment to Child Safety. It says:

Templestowe Valley Primary School is committed to child safety and to the responsibility to keep children safe from harm. The school is committed to creating and maintaining a safe, supportive and enriching learning environment that promotes inclusion and empowers students. All actions and decisions are guided by the school values of Honesty, Acceptance, Respect and Responsibility.

The school has a zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated seriously and consistently in line with the school’s robust policies and procedures*. The school conducts annual training of staff – including the DET Mandatory Reporting module – to meet its legal and moral obligation to protect all children from harm.

The school is steadfast in supporting and respecting all children in its community, inclusive of those with a disability, those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and children who are vulnerable.

Little Kids Big Ideas – Channel 9

As you know from earlier newsletter, a number of our students were involved in filming for the Channel 9 News initiative run by Livinia Nixon, “Little Kids Big Ideas”.

The first screening involved our students promoting the program. They featured in the background as Livinia explained what this new initiative was all about.

On Sunday September 22nd – next Sunday – our students are going to star! The program that was filmed at Templestowe Valley PS is going to be screened. Our students will be introducing Livinia and viewers to our fabulous Sustainability Garden and associated learning programs. There were individual interviews filmed and our three chickens were given the opportunity to become mega media superstars!

It is the first weekend of the school holidays, and it doesn’t clash with a football final, so hopefully lots of people will tune in. The segment airs during the Sunday program, but is sometimes in the middle rather than just before the weather, so might be worth recording so you definitely see our students starring.

Year 5 Snapshot Writing – The School Production

By Xin Rue (5S)

I could feel the tension in the air and the hard floor beneath my feet. I walk on stage. I expectantly wait for a thousand eyes to stare at me and for the light to glare down on me. But no, I cannot see a single pair of eyes and not just that, there was not a single light on. I am still trying to spot my dear friend as I watch, wait and wondered … have I tried hard enough?... We put so much heart into this performance. We are now doing this for us, our parents and our school.

A shot of energy fills my cells and my breath falls and as my thoughts wander to another world. I inhale the perfume I put on to relax. As the wind howls, I expect to hear the audience, but no, I could not hear anything but silence. I taste the crisp wind as it carries a sweet scent. I taste the dryness in my mouth due to the mounting pressure I feel. But still as I wonder, I listen as my friend starts the performance. At last, the time has come…. This is what we have been practicing for…. It was now time to shine!

By Jake B (5S)

Here I am at the Besen Centre, ready to perform. There it is right in front of me. I walk in. Then the adrenalin really starts to kick in and I haven’t even got on stage yet. What is wrong with me? Ok, Jake, you will be fine just got to think positive, I say to myself. I go to my changing rooms and I see all my cast and we are all pumped up. I feel the surge of energy in the room. Then I walk out, things start to get a little bit spicier. Ok Jake, hold it in. Through the speakers, I hear ‘Winds in the East.’ The show has begun. My first line was a bit itsy bitsy. I could still taste the tension in the air. I was really nervous. Then it was my second line and I could no longer feel the sweat on my face. I hear my cue, and I run off side stage. That was the hardest minute of the show.

Page 5: Templestowe Valley Primary School Valley Views...2019/09/19  · down my chimney sweep. As I am dancing all Im smiling at is pitch black. I was expecting to see a sea full of people

Page 5.

By Tilly C (5S)

I see lights shining in my eyes as I wait behind the black curtains ready to go on stage. As the waves of nerves roll in, I start shaking and my heart starts beating fast, not just of nervousness, but excitement too. I walk on feeling agitated but ready to dance. I feel the sweat on everyone's hands as I shake them. As I dance, my hands start to sweat and slip down my chimney sweep. As I am dancing all I’m smiling at is pitch black. I was expecting to see a sea full of people glaring and staring at me waiting for me to dance and amaze them. I listen out for the beats of the music so I can get my dance moves on time. I hear thumps of our shoes stomping on the plain black stage. We are finished! All my nerves go down the drain and relief spreads all over my body. “Back to the Nursery,” Burt yells as I walk off the stage ready to do the big finale.

Kinder Transition Program with Year 5

By Tilly & Hayley (5S)

The Grade Fives at TVPS are so happy to have spent time with the Kinder kids from Templestowe Valley Preschool. We got to meet our new Little Friends and we got to know each other. Finn was one of my buddies. We had so much in common, we both play the same sports and have the same favourite colour.

For the first couple of sessions we did gardening in the Asian Garden. We planted some seeds in small pots and the kids got to take them home. We pulled out weeds and some Kinder kids even found worms! We went to our Sustainability Garden to see the chickens and we got to pat them, some kids were brave and some weren’t.

We read Doctor Seuss books with the kids, even though they can’t read yet- it was still fun. I think the kids favourite part about the books were that they’re really big, (as we read them our Big Books). Other sessions that we did with the Kinder kids were we spent time doing Bush Craft. We were happy to go and collect leaves, flowers and rocks for the Kinder kids to enjoy while making their bush craft.

Hayley was one of my buddies. We had a great time and it was easy for us to get along because we had the same name. Another session we did with the kids was playing with blocks. I shared my buddy with a friend and together we measured her height. Other times we did some drawing and colouring too. There were dinosaurs to colour in or you could draw your own masterpiece. I’m sure everyone in Grade 5 had a fabulous time working with the Kinder children and we are all super excited to be Big Friends next year in Grade 6.
