James Snyder joined the Temple Athletics staff as the cross country and assistant track & field coach in July, 2013.Snyder handles the day-to-day responsibilities for the cross country team as well as the middle and long distance run-ners on the track. No stranger to the Philadelphia area, Snyder is a Downingtown, Pa., native and graduate of Downingtown East High

School. He returned to his home state poised to elevate the competitiveness of the Owls’ distance running program. Snyder’s second year on North Broad was a memorable one for the Owls as junior middle-distance runner Blanca

Fernandez became Temple’s first female track & field athlete in nearly 30 years to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track& Field Championships. She earned All-America Second Team honors for her performance in the 1,500m after earn-ing the same honor at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the mile run. Fernandez won the 1,500m at the Ameri-can Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and was also named all-conference in the 5,000m. She was namedPerformer of the Meet at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships after winning both the mile and

3,000m in meet-record times. Snyder’s athletes broke three school records during the indoor campaign (mile, 3,000m, 5,000m), and this suc-cess continued onto the outdoor oval where the women’s distance group established new program bests in every event from the 800m throughthe 10,000m.

During the 2014 cross country season, Matt Kacyon became Temple’s first all-conference honoree when he finished eighth at the AmericanAthletic Conference Championships. Two weeks later at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, Kacyon earned all-region honors and was named to theUSTFCCCA Academic All-American Team. The men’s distance group continued to thrive on the track where Alex Izewski became the first Owl in38 years to break the 30-minute barrier in the 10,000m run. He and Kacyon each qualified for the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

In his first year at Temple, Snyder’s distance runners established numerous school records as the team adapted to his training philosophy.Five athletes earned all-conference accolades in their inaugural year in the American Athletic Conference. In all, 12 athletes have qualified forthe IC4A/ECAC Championships during his tenure, with two earning All-East honors (women’s 10,000m and men’s 3,000m steeplechase). Kacyonalso represented the Owls in the East Preliminary Round of the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase in 2014. Off the course, themen’s and women’s cross country teams have earned USTFCCCA Academic All-American Honors each year of Snyder's tenure.

Snyder came to Temple from Florida State University where he served as the operations assistant for the Seminoles’ cross country andtrack & field program for a year. Among other duties, Snyder was responsible for managing the equipment budget, planning team travel, as-sisting with home meet management, coordinating on-campus recruiting and assisting with the day to day administration of the Seminole men'sdistance program. Team accomplishments during the 2012-13 season included an NCAA fifth-place finish for men’s cross country as well as anACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field title.

Prior to his summer 2012 arrival in Tallahassee, Snyder spent two years as a graduate assistant at Appalachian State University, where heassisted with both the men's and women's distance programs. The Mountaineers enjoyed wide-ranging success both in cross country and onthe track, with both the men and women establishing numerous school records, NCAA East Preliminary qualifying marks and Southern Con-ference championships and honors.

Snyder is a USA Track & Field Level I and II (Endurance) coach and was selected by USATF to participate in the inaugural Coaches Mentor-ship Program held in conjunction with the 2012 Olympic Track & Field Trials. A firm believer in the importance of resistance training for distancerunners, he is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and hasreceived the distinction of Sport Performance Coach from USA Weightlifting.

Snyder graduated as the '09 class valedictorian from the exercise science department at George Mason University, where he was a multi-ple letterwinner for the cross country and track & field programs. In 2012 he completed a master's degree in exercise science (strength & con-ditioning concentration) from Appalachian State.

An active researcher of sport science and distance runner performance, Snyder has presented his work before the American College ofSports Medicine and the National Strength & Conditioning Association. Snyder has also had his work published in the European Journal of Ap-plied Physiology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, as well as the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training.

As a student he completed an internship with the United States Olympic Committee in Lake Placid, N.Y., and also spent three summers work-ing for ZAP Fitness, a Team USA Distance Running Training Center in Blowing Rock, N.C. James and his wife Rachel reside in Philadelphia.

Travis Mahoney (‘13) became Temple’s first All-American in cross country on Nov. 17, 2012. It was the second time inthat calendar year in which Mahoney had earned All-American honors, and he completed his career with a total of threeAll-America honors at Temple after earning two in track & field.

The Old Bridge, Pa., native ran the 10K course at the 2012 NCAA Championships in 29:58.6 to place 37th overall. In 2011, Mahoney redshirted the cross country season in order to primarily focus on getting back to the NCAA Cham-

pionships performing in the steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials."I came back for a fifth year with three goals in mind: win the A-10 title, win the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and be

named an All-American," said Mahoney after the race. "To be able to sit here and take in that I have done all of thosethings, I couldn't be happier."

Going up against the nation and even the world's top athletes, Mahoney felt privileged to be part of the meet. In whatis deemed the most difficult national championship among all sports to qualify for, Mahoney secured his slot on Nov. 9by running the 10K course at Penn State in a first-place time at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, setting him up to run against 31teams and 37 other individual qualifiers.

"Having the chance to qualify to run at the hardest races you can ever run and to walk away an All-American, I feel com-pletely satisfied to close out my career here and leave my mark at Temple University," said Mahoney.

In his Temple career, Mahoney was a three-time All-American, a seven-time Atlantic 10 Champion, a three-time A-10Outstanding Performer of the Year and the Mid-Atlantic Athlete of the Year in 2012.

On August 31, 2015, Mahoney reunited with Temple cross country at Belmont Plateau. As part of the Belmont PlateauHall of Fame Classic, Mahoney was honored for being the course record-holder.

Dr. Neil Theobald was named Temple University’s10th president in August 2012. In partnership with anexcellent faculty and talented staff, he leads a univer-sity that educates more than 38,000 students, em-ploys 15,000 faculty and staff, and operates one of thenation’s leading academic medical centers.

Temple has achieved several milestones in Dr.Theobald’s early tenure. The university has set bothprivate fundraising and research funding records ineach of his first three years. It has also enrolled recordnumbers of students—with the last two freshmenclasses being the most academically qualified and di-verse entering classes in Temple history. Temple hasbeen nationally recognized by Kiplinger’s as one of thebest values among public universities. These achieve-ments have been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition,The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other majormedia outlets. Philadelphia Business Journal namedDr. Theobald its Most Admired Education CEO in 2015.

Dr. Theobald has laid out six commitments thatguide University resource allocation:(1) Address head-on the issue of time-to-degree,which is the primary determinant of student debt atpublic universities. In his innovative FlyIn4 initiative, students are guaranteed the ability to graduate in fouryears, keeping their debt to a minimum.(2) Maintain affordability and commit Temple to be atthe forefront of quality undergraduate instruction.(3) Share Temple’s greatest strengths—the expertise, creativity, and energy of its faculty, researchers, andstudents—to address Philadelphia’s two perennialproblems: indigent health care and P-12 education.(4) Drive the regional economy through Temple’s re-search enterprise.

(5) Maintain and increase the diversity that the uni-versity is known for. One avenue to do so is the Tem-ple Option under which 1,000 freshmen are admittedeach year without standardized test scores.(6) Educate innovators across the university so thatTemple’s future alumni remain flexible and produc-tive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing world.

He also has decentralized the university budgetto reduce costs and improve efficiency. In addition,Dr. Theobald launched Visualize Temple, a masterplanning process that seeks to transform the univer-sity’s central campus.

Dr. Theobald started out like many Temple Owls.Born to working-class parents in Peoria, Ill., heplanned to enter an electrician’s apprenticeship afterhigh school. However, he won an academic scholar-ship to Trinity (CT) College and became the first per-son in his family to attend college, earning a B.A. ineconomics in 1978. After teaching mathematics andcoaching high school baseball, he earned a Ph.D. ineducation finance from Washington in 1988, winningthe Jean Flanigan Award from the American EducationFinance Association for the outstanding doctoral dis-sertation.

Dr. Theobald joined the faculty of the Washing-ton’s College of Education after receiving his Ph.D. Hehelped create the Danforth administrator training pro-gram at the UW that is now in its 27th year of opera-tion. His research focused on decentralizingeducational funding and modeling educational labormarkets. He received the University Council for Edu-cational Administration’s Jack Culbertson Award forthe most significant contributions by a junior profes-sor and earned tenure in 1993.

Dr. Theobald moved to Indiana University in

1993 to direct the Indiana Education Policy Center, co-funded by the Lilly Endowment and the Indiana Gen-eral Assembly. His work focused on Indiana’s K-12school funding formula. During his research career,Dr. Theobald published nearly 100 articles, books, andreports on education funding and related fields, whichled to more than $7 million in grants and contracts. He was also a 3-time winner of IU’s Teaching Excel-lence Recognition Award.

From 2002-07, Dr. Theobald was Senior ViceProvost for Indiana’s flagship campus in Bloomington, where he was responsible for the campus’ budget anddirected a $1.1 billion capital campaign. Major ac-complishments include adding 120 tenure-track fac-ulty members, increasing the financial aid endowmentfrom less than $150 million to more than $550 million, and increasing the mean SAT score of IU Blooming-ton’s incoming class from 1099 to 1203.

From 2007 to 2012, Dr. Theobald was SVP andCFO for IU, where he oversaw a $3.1 billion budget, supervision of HR services for IU’s 3,100 faculty andmore than 14,000 staff members, and managementof the largest student union in the world and one ofthe five largest student housing systems in the coun-try. During his time as CFO, IU’s credit ranking was up-graded to Moody’s highest level (Aaa)—making IU oneof only eight Aaa-rated public universities in America.

Dr. Theobald enjoys sports—playing intramuralsoftball at Temple each spring—and bicycles to/fromwork whenever possible. Every fall, he and his wife,Sheona Mackenzie, teach a freshmen seminar on or-ganizational change. They have three children: Roddy,a Ph.D. statistician; Kinnear, a physician; and Mattie,a graduate student. They also have two grandchildren,Jimmy and Lochlynn.
