It is interesting to reflect that without Hanukkah we might not have Christmas. That is, without the successful revolt of 165 BCE, Judaism might have died out before the age of Jesus. Then, Jesus would not have been born a Jew and could not have been thought of as the Messiah. As this holiday of Hanukkah approaches, I send you blessings with words of cheer, warmth, support, and health. We belong to one another. My first word is one of profound appreciation to our TBS congregation. The year seems to move along so fast. The High Holidays are behind us and we’ re a l ready look ing ahead to Chanukah. So much has been happening in our congregation. Let me first start by thanking Marc Einstein for all the work he does with the Religious Practices Committee. Thank you Marc for all the work you did organizing the High Holidays, the preparations you’ve made for our Friday night services and our three Bar Mitzvahs which were so successful. The hard work you and your committee members put in is greatly appreciated.

Looking to December, we have a Latke Party planned that will be different than past parties as it’s a coordinated effort between both the Brotherhood and Sisterhood. It will be on a Friday night just before services. I sincerely suggest we all make plans to attend. I know I will certainly be there if I can.

On January 15th we have our Annual Honoree Banquet. It will be a new venue, a new program and some of our most deserving Honorees. Honorees Jerry and Robin have really brought some life into our family. Robin’s outstanding work on the Shofar is no easy task. She also attends every event to take pictures for all to enjoy. Jerry is Nate’s go to man whenever there is a problem with our sound system and he is always there to help the Rabbi with her mike. Harvey Wolfson has been on our Board of Directors, Brotherhood President and presently very active on our Executive Board as Vice President. He has done financial audits in the past and will be heading our Security Committee in the future. And of course there is Georgette Bothner, our Eveready Bunny. What hasn’t she done? Just to name a few, on the Board of Directors as Chair of Membership Committee, working with Marc in preparing for the holidays, taking charge of our Passover Dinner and serving as Vice President of the Sisterhood.

What an awesome group of honorees we have this year and I’m looking forward to being able to recognize their efforts and pay tribute to these wonderful members

of our Temple family that work so hard to make us all happy.

Barb and I would like everyone for their cards, well wishes and prayers while I was recovering from my surgery. It means a lot when your hurting but know there are so many in our Temple family who are concerned about you and praying for a speedy and good recovery. Thank you all. I hope you all have a wonderful Chanukah and that lights of this holiday shine on you with health, peace and happiness.

Arnie

As we come to the end of 2016, I’d like to thank Nancy & Neil, Carin, and Sharon for co-hosting the brunch in November, and to Helene & George and Maxine & Bob, for host ing the progressive dinner in December. While these events are wonderful fundraisers, they do much more by offer ing opportunities for us to get together as a “family” and create much camaraderie amongst our members. As with the Brotherhood bowling league, many of our new members have participated and gotten to know one another, as they became active members of our temple family.

Harvey, Georgette, and Robin & Gerry were once “new members” who got to know us by participating in Temple activities like these. They, too, became active members of our Temple family and now make key decisions and contribute to the success of our congrega t ion . I t ’s w i th g rea t appreciation and admiration that I join the congregation in honoring them for their contributions as the 2017 Temple Honorees. I hope you will attend the Honoree Banquet to show support and appreciation for their efforts.

Merle and I wish you all a happy Chanukah and a safe New Year.

Marc

2nd VICE-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Harvey Wolfson

1st Vice-President

Carin Hanen

Chanukah is fast approaching. For me, the holiday season was ushered in by the wonderful Family Service on Friday, December 1st. Much joyous singing and laughing and wonderment was created by our special rabbi. Not only that but the guitar music provided by our musician, Michael, was both appropriate and well appreciated. It helped to set the mood of the holiday. This mood could not only be seen, but also felt, in the smiles and laughter of the children on the bema and in the smiles of the congregation. Who can ever forget “I knew an old lady who swallowed a dreidel” but didn’t die as it wasn’t fatal. This is the Holiday season. Children are anticipating Chanukah gelt, and who knows what else. Everyone is busy. Brotherhood and Sisterhood are working diligently to plan the Latke and matzo ball soup Party on December 30th. They are also working on the Trash and Treasure Flea market and food event. And that is not all. The Sisterhood Chinese Auction and lunch, and the Honoree banquet are all on the horizon. Last week I helped install a hanukia outside at a tennis friend’s condo in Punta Gorda. When she first put one up, in previous years, despite the holiday decorations of other religions being paid for by the condo association., the association refused to pay for hers. The anti-Semites in her condo sent her hate mail and left nasty notes on her car. This was highlighted on the TV News. This year, she is having the same problem. I spoke to her and she is thinking of filing an anti-discrimination suit against the condo association. As I was finishing up this column, I received an e-mail from Nancy, about the vandalism of Temple Shalom in Naples. Thankfully no one was hurt but our hearts go out to them for their anguish. Anti-Semitism is not dead in Southwest Florida! I remember well, growing up in Miami, and all of the wonderful Chanukah parties with Siblings, nieces and nephews, and finally children and grandchildren. I look forward to many more Chanukah celebrations with my Temple Beth Shalom family. A happy and healthy Chanukah to all, Harvey

Have you heard Rabbi discuss the importance of community? Oh, I argued when I first joined Temple Beth Shalom. For me, my relationship with God is a very personal, one-on-one kind of thing. I don’t need anyone telling me how or when or where to pray, I thought. But still, I listened as Rabbi extolled the importance of praying as part of a community.. of feeling connected on Shabbat with a roomful of family and friends… of feeling connected beyond that with Jews all over the world who are saying the same prayers, singing the same songs. It’s even more evident to me on Passover.. and other holidays, but mostly on Passover.. when I realize, as I do every year, that Jews all over the world are reading from the same Haggadah and eating, basically, the same meal. Yes, Rabbi… you’ve convinced me that, although I still retain that one-on-one with God, it’s important to pray as part of a community and to be counted as part of a minyan.

Why is that my subject for this issue of the Shofar? Because I think we’re in for a rocky road in the coming four years as we adjust to a new President and new government thinking. As Jews and as Americans, I think we’re going to need to reach out to one another.. to stand up for the things that are important to us.. and to make sure our voices are heard. Rabbi’s concept of “community” has never seemed more important to me. Besides, it keeps me from thinking about resolutions ☺. I’m just not ready to promise to lose another 25 pounds, or to hold my tongue when you-know-who says the rules of staying healthy don’t apply to him. Instead, I’m going to concentrate on becoming more a part of the TBS community and I suggest that you do as well. In addition to attending services, make sure you sign up for the Honoree Banquet. It’s going to be a lovely affair this year! And try to attend one of the Progressive Dinners. They are always so much fun and the food is generally second only to the camaraderie. For something less formal, a group of us tries to meet at Nestor’s before services at least once a month.. send me an email and I’ll be happy to let you know when. TBS will offer as much as you will take from it, but it’s on you to take the first steps.

Carin

PLEASE HELP! Buildings and Grounds

is looking for some volunteers.

If you are interested please contact Nate

The past several months have been crazy, busy times for Sisterhood and the next few months promise to be more of the same ! In October, your Sisterhood devoted lots of time, energy, effort and love to the planning and preparation of the celebration and observance of our High Holy Days. October culminated with a joyous Sukkot dinner and service under the stars. The celebratory atmosphere was provided by our sukkah that was put together and decorated by Joel Barlow, his hard working crew and the Hebrew School students and their families. As always, the fruits of their labors were festive and lovely. Our delicious Sukkot dinner was provided by Michael of El Pollo Rico. Your Sisterhood created a lavish ice cream bar which everyone enjoyed. In addition, we planned, set up, served and cleaned up after the evening was over. November found your Sisterhood equally as busy preparing the oneg festivities that followed three Bar Mitzvahs! Our goal was to create a special, memorable party after their ceremony to let them know we recognize and celebrate their special achievement and congratulate them on all their hard work. Here's a quick look at what Sisterhood has planned for the next several months. By the time you receive edition of the Shofar, we will already have had our annual Holiday dinner and Chinese auction at Chen's China Bistro. Last year's event was sooo successful we have decided to make it an annual event! On Friday, December 30th TBS Brotherhood and Sisterhood will be collaborating with each other to bring a spectacular Hanukkah Family Dinner and Service to Temple Beth Shalom Congregation. Brotherhood will be serving their delectable latkes and Sisterhood will serve chicken matzoh ball soup prepared by our very own soup maven, Judi Roth. Anyone who wishes to bring a salad or jelly donuts, please call Toby Gold at (239) 940-2396, who will coordinate. After dinner, Rabbi will lead the children and their families in the lighting of the seventh candle of Hanukkah. We are issuing a special invitation to our families with children, Hebrew School

students and of course our recent Bar Mitzvah boys, Jacob, Adrien and Jonah. Can you think of a more beautiful way to celebrate a holiday than with family? Last but not least is the Brotherhood and Sisterhood fund raiser, Trash or Treasure Sale with Bakery goodies and Kosher style Deli sandwiches. This event will take place in the TBS Social Hall on Sunday, February 26th from 1-6. Flyers d additional info will follow shortly so SAVE THIS DATE! Sisterhood’s rational election of officers takes place in June, however, our talented secretary Emily has other pressing concerns at the moment and we are in dire need of someone who can fill this roll until June. Please contact Suzie Hershfield or Merne Stein if you can help out.

Thanks you. Respectfully submitted, Georgette Bothner, Pres. pro temp

Congratulations to Temple Beth Shalom’s Member

Scott Kashman Kudos to Scott Kashman, chief administrative director of Cape Coral Hospital for bringing the hospital rating up from a “D” a few years ago, to an “A.”  Scott oversaw the improvement of conditions of hospital acquired infections, as well as adding enough critical care physicians in the Intensive Care Unit to provide 24/7 coverage, and he made many improvements in other areas.

First let me wish you all a very Happy Chanukah and a healthy and happy 2017. In November, Temple Beth Shalom set a record, 3 Bar Mitzvahs in 3 weeks. The three young men, Jacob Ritter, Adrian Weinstein, and Jonah DiLeonardo conducted the Service, read from the Torah and Haftorah and gave inspiring speeches. We at TBS are very proud of all three, and look forward to watching them mature and grow into fine young men. On Friday, December 30, we will have a Chanukah Shabbat. We will begin with the Lighting of the Menorahs (so everyone please bring yours and take part in the celebration). This will be followed by the now famous Brotherhood Latkes, and Sisterhood Chicken Soup. After the meal we will have our Shabbat Service (Family style) in the Social Hall. So as they say in the South…Y’all come on down.

It has been a very busy couple of months in terms of membership. We have added 4 new families to our congregation. Join me in extending a warm welcome to Gail Rader, Dahlia Vanderwoude-Miller, Jill and Rich Lawther and Sonja Norenberg and Alan Poland. In addition to our new members, we have greeted several visitors who have expressed a desire to return to Temple Beth Shalom for services and to share in the joy and loving energy that enfolds everyone that comes through the doors of our synagogue.

Peace, Health, Joy to ourTemple family

Fundraising by Alan Weissman

Over a period of years, I have dutifully submitted my Shofar articles. Usually the articles are a rehash of upcoming events that you have been badgered with from the bimah, email or phone calls. This afternoon I asked myself, "What can I write that's different?”.

In this issue, I am going to put theburden on you. Try to visualize what Temple Beth Shalom would be like were it not for fundraising. We might – heaven forbid – be in a store front, or perhaps we would have a part time Rabbi and half the membership.

But most of all, I see myself missing out on a lot of fun like I have had recently by attending the brunch at NancySwanson and Neil Marlo’s home, co-hosted by Sharon Rosenberg and Carin Hanan, and the gourmet progressive dinner hosted by Jorge and Helene Glocer with dessert at the home of Maxine and Bob Morris.

If you’re new to our congregation, we encourage you to take the plunge and come to these events. Get dressed up and attend the Honoree Banquet. We “oldies” have made acquaintances among you “newbies”. We’d love to sit with you at the Honoree Banquet. Make a reservation for Progressive Dinner #2 at the home of the Levine sisters, Stephanie and Lori. They’renewer members and have opened their homes to all of us. We’re grateful that you’ve chosen to walk with us and we’ll make you as comfortable as you’ll let us.

Thanks for allowing us to invite you. We hope you’ll respond to our invitation. Have a wonderful Chanukahand best wishes for a joyful, healthy and prosperous 2017.

Alan

The fall semester is nearly over! We have two class sessions left before winter break. The students are preparing for Chanukah. Aliza Bental our excellent Hebrew teacher continues to focus on Hebrew with holidays, prayers, history, etc. branching off the Hebrew content.

During the first weeks of December I was very distracted from school during my mother’s recent illness. Many thanks to Aliza as well as Marcia Strumwater for ensuring that our school continued as usual. I also appreciate Ruth Belkin’s assistance with the school as well as the families who provided snacks for the students’ weekly Kiddish: Matthew and Tracy Matera, Melissa and David Greenbaum, Abby and John DiLeonardo, Rebecca Snow. w. Following are some highlights from this semester: The High Holidays youth services on October 3 and 12 were led by students from our religious school.

- Ian DiLeonardo, Edison Greenbaum, and Gregory Urban led the Rosh Hashanah service. Jonah DiLeonardo was the leader for the Yom Kippur service. They all did an excellent job!

- Sam Brucker had the youth congregation all abuzz with his Shofar blowing skills. Sam blew his Shofar at both the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur youth services.

On October 20 in addition to class time the students decorated the Sukkah. Many thanks to Zachary Urban for reaching the high places and for the parents and siblings for helping.

As is true every year, it takes a village to build the Sukkah. Many thanks to: • Joel Barlow and Marty Burnette for assembling the framework for

the Sukkah. • Alan Weissman for providing the palm fronds. He grows them on

his property. This year Alan cut the fronds, loaded them into his vehicle, drove them to our temple and then unloaded the fronds.

• Joel, Zachary and school parents for attaching cloth panels to the top and sides of the Sukkah. This is the first year we’ve had panels for the top. They made it so much easier to decorate the Sukkah. Many thanks, Joel!

• The students for creating and hanging the art work and paper chains that decorated the Sukkah.

• Avi Turner and Joel for disassembling the Sukkah and putting it in storage for next year.

The school calendar for the remaining sessions in December 2016 through March 2017 follows. December 15, 22 Class in Session December 29 No class-Winter Break January 5, 2017 No class-Winter Break January 12, 19, 26 Class in Session February 2, 9, 16, 23 Class in Session March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Class in Session

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

Page 10

It is with great pleasure that Temple Beth Shalom welcomes Iglesia

Ministerio Vasos de Honra, Yuardin Mendoza I, Sr., Minister.

We have entered into a one year lease agreement with the church. They will be meeting in the back rooms of the Temple which have been keyed for their entry. They have exclusive use of the classroom next to the Sisterhood closet. They will be storing some items in the closet next to the classroom we use for Religious School. The church will be using the facility Tuesday and Thursday from 7 PM – 10 PM and Sunday from 10 AM – 2 PM. They should not be interrupted at all during those times. We look forward to a good relationship with the church, one that will be beneficial to both of our congregations. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Marc Nudel who is our liaison.

A thank you note from an Election Poller

“Please convey my heartfelt thanks to those of you who provided a most welcoming venue for polling during the election.   As a poll worker, I can tell you honestly the food provided by the hard-working ladies was a blessing.  Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.   God bless you, Carolyn Booth”

RECYCLE:  Participating in recycling is akin to saving our water. If you believe in saving the planet the great-grandkids, please heed the following:   THINGS NOT TO PUT IN RECYCLING: NO napkins, paper towels, paper plates, plastic bags, cellophane, food-encrusted boxes, un-flattened cardboard. NO plastic bottles with liquid still inside. NO STYROFOAM. Things you can recycle WHICH MUST BE RINSED enough to look clean: those big wine and juice bottles. Emptied, Rinsed and Crushed:  plastic bottles and cans.  (crush by stepping on them. YOU  MUST UNFOLD ALL BOXES PUT IN THE DUMPSTER! IF YOU FOLLOW THESE SUGGESTIONS, YOU WILL BE NOMINATED FOR VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH!

HELP NEEDED: The plants and plantings in front and back of the building will not survive the winter without watering.  It takes 2 hours to do the whole job; and, you have to roll out the giant hose in front to get to the marquee, the holocaust memorial, and then you have to roll it back up.  If ONE person, or a clutch of volunteers would do this only ONE DAY a week, it would free me up to do other duties.

TOILET PAPER.  If I marked the duo-rolls of t.p. as #1 and #2, do you think people would use up #1 first, before using #2?  This would make it very easy for your janitor and cleaning ladies to keep the commodes from running out?

Comments to: [email protected] As a matter of fact..send ALL of your complaints and suggestions, warnings, and offers to me via e-mail.  I can never remember what you tell me on Friday nights, because I am enjoying Shabbat, and forgetting all else.

MARQUEE MANAGER: One person could take over the job of changing the billboard out front. The sign stays the same most of the time, but when a wedding or bar-mitzvah comes, or at holidays, the sign needs to be changed. This is one of the easy jobs for someone, especially a little taller than me, to take on and fulfill their mitzvah requirement for volunteering.

Think of what you might be getting out of instead of this easy job!

Once we had one person for Publications and Publicity. Now we have three. The job was too big for one. I had that job, so I know. Now I have Building and Grounds…and it, also, is too big for one person. If I can break it down into smaller parts, we can avoid burn-out; the scourge of a small congregation. Please think about what’s done that you don’t like and how YOU would change it, and if YOU would do it.  I hope to hear from you.

Temple Beth Shalom Welcomes our New Members Temple Beth Shalom has experienced a year not only of growth but of generational and cultural expansion. We need to thank our hard-working membership committee, ably led by Georgette Boethner and Herb Gallop… and to pat ourselves on the back for creating such a warm and welcoming atmosphere that such interesting people have joined our ranks. Don’t be shy… now that you know them, pick up the phone, give someone a call. Invite them out to dinner or over to your home for a drink. We promise you’ll enjoy the experience and they will appreciate the hand outstretched in welcome. * * * Trying to speak to Rocky Baker at the end of a quarter is challenging because she’s working hard for a world-renowned computer company, but once you get her, she’s delightful. She spent most of her adult life in Maryland like so many other TBS members. Now that hubby Gary is retired and younger son is a senior at FGCU, the move to be near Florida beaches became simple. Her other son lives in California with his wife and Rocky’s two beautiful grandchildren. Since joining TBS, Rocky has become involved with Sisterhood and loved attending the 60s show at the Broadway Palm. She’s also caught “the mah jongg bug” and plays as often as she can with other ladies from the temple. * * * Bobbie Felsen came to Cape Coral with a built in family and then extended her ties to include Sydell Brucker and others at TBS. Bobbie, who has her PhD in Fine Arts and Education, spent her professional career teaching art in Maryland and lecturing at Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt and Brown University. She has the distinction of having been named the Outstanding Art Teacher in the United States in the early 2000s. Bobbie moved to Cape Coral in early 2015 with her son, daughter in law and two grandsons. Her son is trying to start a business doing pressure washing, so call her if you have need of his services. She also has a daughter who lives in LA with her husband and two sons. Bobbie and her family live in Coral Lakes near the Bruckers and, so far, she has enjoyed attending Sisterhood functions and dinner theatre with TBS’ social activities groups. * * * Rayne Golay brings a touch of European culture to our congregation, having lived much of her life in Finland and Switzerland before coming to Cape Coral in 2008. She is an avid reader and a published author of both fiction and non-fiction books. With a Master’s degree in psychology, Rayne was certified as an addictions counselor in England after additional studies in the United States. With a talent for languages, she also translated dialogues in Hollywood movies from English into Finnish and Swedish. In Geneva, Switzerland, where Rayne's two children still reside, she worked in a multinational company as an addictions counselor with responsibilities for all of the company’s European subsidiaries. She moved to Cape Coral in 2008, fell in love with and married her current husband, David Wallace, a retired math instructor from FGCU and Edison. * * * Jill Lawther first attended TBS with her mother, Bea Marcus, a long time congregant and friend. Even after Bea passed, Jill would come to TBS when she was here on vacation and soon husband-to-be Rich started to join her. They were both pleased that he was welcomed by Rabbi and the congregation and, two years ago, they asked Rabbi Buchen to officiate at their wedding. Now they’ve relocated permanently to Cape Coral and Jill’s son, who is also new to Florida, is living nearby in Sun City. Back in Michigan, Jill worked in automobile finance for 40 years and Rich was a Presbyterian Pastor. Now they’ve happily settled into the “retired in Florida” lifestyle. “We’re just glad to be here and be part of this congregation that was so good to my mom. We are eager to get involved, meet new people, and create a community for ourselves,” Jill promises. * * * Matthew and Tracey Matera joined TBS for a heartwarming reason: they wanted their kids to have more of a Jewish background than they’d had themselves. So, when you see them and their three precious kids during Shabbat, be sure to say “Shabbat shalom!” to Evan (who’s 6), Rebekah (who’s 3) and Brandon (the 1 year old who entertains us all). Matthew is a fifth grade teacher and Tracey is a stay-at-home mom. They love Cape Coral so much, they’re bringing the whole family down. Tracey’s sister joined them last year and her mom has bought a condo to retire to in three years. Matthew’s mom already lives in Ocala. Tracey told me, “We’re enjoying the temple so much and we want our kids to learn about Judaism and be part of a Jewish community instead of World Series Jews who only show up for the big stuff.”

* * * Peri and Bob Pantazes not only joined the temple this year but Peri in particular has become quite involved.. singing in our choir and attending dinner theatre with our social activities group. She says, “I’ve never belonged to a synagogue like this one. We came in the door and were immediately greeted with hugs, invited to dinner, it’s a really pleasant environment.” Bob and Peri came to us from Atlantic City, NJ where she was a teacher for most of her career and a consultant with the New Jersey Education Association “after I retired for the first time.” Bob was an electronic technician / broadcast engineer and remains active with the Masons and amateur radio. Bob is already looking forward to participating in the Brotherhood’s Latke party. Their daughter, Edra, is a special education teacher and grant writer in LA. * * * Many of us know Gail Rader because we prayed so hard for the recovery of her granddaughter, Alexandra, when she suffered a traumatic brain injury after a car accident, but what we don’t know about Gail is almost more interesting than what we do! She spent most of her life in the Detroit area where she was a manicurist, then finished her degree and went to work in the HR department for Exxon Mobil, and then opened a scrapbooking store of her own. Gail moved to Fort Myers in 2011 to be near her son and his family and first came to TBS about 3 years ago, looking for a good mah jongg game. From there, she started attending services and Saturday morning Torah Study because, “I felt I had found my spiritual home here.” She adds, “I was ever so grateful to have the spiritual and emotional support that Rabbi Buchen and the congregation provided me.” * * * Introduce yourself to Jamie and Jessica Schuster, confess that you’re bad with names, and they’ll reassure you, “Just think of Jesse James and you’ve got us!” They come to us from Rochester, NY where Jamie was a clinical radiologist and Jess, in addition to being very involved with kids and grandkids, is a retired nurse-practitioner, quilter, crafter and published author. Jamie is Medical Director of Virtualscopics, specializing in oncology research. Jess is the author of Rachis Behavior and Eight Kinds of Cookies, both available from Amazon. They are parents to four children: Sarah, an attorney in New York City; Saul, a chef and law student also in NYC; Christina, a physicians’ assistant in Rochester; and Laura, a math teacher also in Rochester. * * * If you’re lucky enough to have been at temple one night when there’s a smiling gentleman playing guitar at the foot of the bimah, then you’ve already been entertained by Michael Scolnick. Michael and his wife, Arlene Nathan, joined us this year, bringing unlimited joy and talent with them. They are native New Yorkers, coming from Rockland County (upstate from Manhattan) where Michael was an attorney. They have four sons, all married, and ten grandchildren. They used to visit son Bram on the east coast of Florida, swearing they’d never move down here but, when Arlene’s brother moved here to the west coast, they fell in love and followed him down. Music of all kinds (except new jazz and rap) is a shared love and they are annual subscribers to the Southwest Florida Symphony. If you want to hear more of Michael’s music, he can often be found playing and singing folk and 50s-60s rock & roll on Times Square at Fort Myers Beach. * * * Belkys and David Sherman joined TBS after becoming friendly with Mara Exposito and the lovely Ms. Talia. They’d lived for 10 Years in Wellington on the east coast but came here for David’s job as a Computer Engineer with the State. Belkys works part time in home health but readily admits her full time job is taking care of Ethan, age 12, who is getting ready for bar mitzvah next summer, and EllaRose, age 10. Both EllaRose and Ethan attend the TBS religious school and the North Fort Myers Academy of the Arts. Ethan is studying cello, dance and martial arts; EllaRose studies violin and art and is looking to find a synchronized swimming team. Belkys is originally from Venezuela and loves TBS where she finds everyone to be down to earth, warm and welcoming.”

BrunchatNancyandNeil’sFundraiser

On Sunday morning, November 6, Nancy Swanson and Neil Marlo opened their home to a crowd of 38 hungry diners. Aided by chefs Sharon Rosenberg and Carin Hanan, they prov ided a sumptuous brunch fo r our congregation. The buffet table almost wasn’t big enough for all the delectable choices! Neil manned the griddled and turned out delicious pancakes and turkey bacon. Other offerings included scrambled eggs, quiche, blintz casserole, salmon croquettes, sautéed squashes, fruit and an array of cheeses and pastry.

Since the brunch was a mini-fundraiser, we’re happy to report that it raised over $400. Many thanks to Nancy, Neil, Sharon and Carin for their great cooking and big hearts!

To those of you who missed the 1st progressive dinner on December 10, make sure you get in on one of the upcoming dinners. The food and the company were both fabulous and it was an evening that will be long remembered.

Appetizers and main course were at the home of Helene & Jorge Glocer and the desserts were hosted by Maxine and Bob Morris. This dinner featured all kinds of Israeli dishes prepared by Jorge’s native Israeli cousin, Yona Sirota. We started out with homemade hummus, baba ganoush, tuna and avocado salad and more. Dinner was family style with salmon and chicken with pineapple accompanied by an assortment of salads and unique vegetable dishes like eggplant in a tomato sauce with potatoes, green beans with onions and mushrooms, and quinoa with dried fruits. Wine and conversation flowed and laughter abounded.

After filling up on healthy appetizers and main courses, guests moved on to the desserts where Bob and Maxine provided an incredible assortment of sweets, coffee and more. Among other delicious desserts, there was ice cream, flan, a variety of cakes and fruit. After so much food, everyone sat around and relaxed together.

It was this relaxing end to a beautiful evening that reminded us of how special Temple Beth Shalom is. While the food and drink was great, the ease and joy of being together is something not often found.

If you have not signed up for one of the upcoming dinners, do it now. You will be in for a very special time.

TBS Sisterhood Celebrates Hanukkah

On Wed. Dec 14th, members of Sisterhood, women of TBS and friends, gathered at Chen's China Bistro for their annual holiday celebration.  What a celebration it was!  The food at Chen's was fabulous as usual.  After dinner we participated in our gift exchange.  Participants drew a number and when their number was called, they had the choice of picking a gift from the pile or "exchanging" their choice for a gift someone else had already received.  Of course the fun was in the bartering back and forth.  This year's hot ticket item was a set of colorful ceramic knives that changed hands many times during the course of the Chinese Auction.  Needless to say, everyone had a wonderful time and we made our reservations for next year.
