August Recreation NewsIn Tellico Village, as in any community, things change. New houses are built, new neighbors move in, and old facilities expand. However, with all the transformation of the past 30 years, there is one ideal that stays the same. The volunteer spirit of Tellico Village acts as a model for our region’s most touted characteristic. The willingness to support the Recreation Department in all our endeavors, both big and small, this summer season acts as yet another testament to the impact that such generous support can make.

Larissa Lownsdale, Activities Coordinator for the Recreation Department, has spent the past 17 years dedicating her free time to helping her son Max earn his way through the ranks of Boy Scouts, all the way to its highest rank (Eagle). Even after Max’s ceremony in April of this year, Larissa has continued to volunteer her time by helping other young men achieve their Eagle goals in Troop 354. Recently, Larissa helped coordinate an Eagle project that would benefit Tellico Village Recreation as well. Noah Smith constructed 5 benches and, with the help of Larissa and her Eagle Scout son, placed these benches along the Recreation Department’s new woodland hiking trails located beside the Wellness Center.

Another addition that packs an aesthetic punch was also given to the Recreation Department through the generosity of volunteerism. The Tellico Village Bird Club brings together a number of your friends and neighbors who share of a passion for ornithology. A collaboration between Simon Bradbury, Recreation Director, and Bird Club President, Claire Manzo along with several other members of the club, resulted in another fantastic project that speaks to the love of community, indigenous wildlife and Recreation Department in Tellico Village. Eight blue bird nesters were added to our ½ mile of paved walking path around the Wellness Center. We are excited about the positive addition to our walkers exercise experience.

Another show of support for the Recreation Department from our community is one that might not be the most apparent to all of our membership, but it certainly packs an equally huge punch. For second year in a row, several of our local businesses in Tellico Village have generously helped the Recreation Department sponsor some extra special activities for our kids at Camp Tellico. The awesome inflatable water slides have become a super popular was to end a week of great activities with our campers. A special thank you to: Swafford Financial (sponsorship of Camp Tellico t-shirts for kids), Huffer’s Home Solutions, AWE Hospitality, LLC (donation of food for campers), Cook Bros. Homes, LLC, Preferred Pharmacy, Mikki Barr, Personal Trainer, Mike Geiser, Fitness & Exercise Solutions, Ben Campbell, Edward Jones, Fred Hans, Hans Development Company and Tellico Lake Tennis Association. We also want to thank those Tellico Village clubs and individual residents who donated their time, energy and incredible handiwork to help us make this one of the best years yet. More special thanks to: Village Woodworkers, Tellico Village Pickleball Club, Tellico Village Tennis Players, Shirley Bierkamp, and Paulette Lownsdale.
