PRINCIPAL’S PATTER
Hello Everyone
A reminder to everyone about Stranger Danger. Throughout the
metropolitan area over recent months there have been various incidents
where children travelling to and from school have been approached by
strangers. Please talk through and remind your children about the following
safety messages.
Whenever possible, walk with a friend or in a group. Never take shortcuts
through isolated areas. Always be aware of one’s surroundings – be alert.
If possible, walk facing the on-coming traffic. Never get too close to cars
that stop nearby. Always report any stranger danger concerns.
Our staff has reinforced these messages to the students and parents are
encouraged to talk to their children about their importance. By using
common-sense we can all work together to keep the children at Balcatta
Primary School safe.
Throughout the year, there will be class displays and starry work in the office
foyer. Whenever you are visiting the school, please “drop in” to see the
great work. Presently, we have a variety of children’s work on display.
Just a reminder that our staff car parks (Main Street) are not to be used for
“dropping off” or “picking up” students. Please use the parents’ drive-
through at the southern end of the school (behind the Pre-Primary Centre)
or you may park in Sylvia Street and cross Main Street using the pedestrian
crossing attended by our crosswalk wardens. Many thanks for your support
in this matter.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

STARRY WORK
Balcatta Primary was lucky enough to have Perth artist Mel McVee come into our school in week
3 to paint a beautiful mural to brighten up the school grounds.
Mel McVee is a local award winning Perth artist working in the realm of large scale and
community murals. Mel's artwork lends itself to a paint-by-numbers style which meant all the
students, from Pre-primary to year 6 were able to get involved and assist in the painting process.
The students worked on it for 2 days, with Mel speaking to each class, giving them an insight into
her work and her process as an artist. Mel was super patient and generous with students,
answering their 101 questions! All the students came away from the experience excited to learn
more about local street art.

Determination – Virtue for August
Dear Parents/Carers,
We have started a new program at Balcatta Primary School this term called ‘You Can Sit With Me’ with students in years 1-6.
‘You Can Sit With Me’ is a kindness campaign and an anti-bullying initiative that supports children who are worried or are feeling alone. Everyone has days when: -they don’t feel as good as other days; -someone has been mean to them; -they might be new to the school; -they are feeling shy; or -their friend is away and they feel a little lonely. The aim of this campaign is to bring communities together and to promote kindness in schools (and other groups such as sport clubs) through selected children wearing the ‘You Can Sit With Me’ yellow wristbands as Ambassadors. The ‘You Can Sit With Me’ campaign has some recommendations and guidelines to assist us in implementing the program successfully:
Not all students will or should have a wristband as this causes a “fad” and the purpose of having them is lost. We will have 3 students from each class selected to wear the wristbands for the week.
It is suggested that students in leadership roles have access to the ‘You Can Sit With Me’ wristbands, as should children who show kindness and compassion regularly.
The developers of the program feel it is important that the children understand that if they make the commitment to wear the wristband that they don’t take it off for the duration of the school day or time in which it has been allocated to them to wear it. (We are also going to request that the wristbands be left at school at the end of the day.)
It is important that the children think carefully prior to wearing the wristband. They need to consider the following points: Am I having a good day today, do I feel strong enough to help others? Am I happy for anybody of any race, gender, age or culture to sit with me today? Am I too busy today to help other people because I have activities on at recess and/or lunchtime?
These 5 simple words ‘You Can Sit With Me’ can have a huge impact if we all work together to make it happen. If you would like to take a look at their webpage you can find it at www.youcansitwithme.org or the campaign’s Facebook page can be found at facebook/YOUCANSITWITHME. If you would like further information or have any suggestions please speak to your child’s Teacher or Mr Cox or Mrs McCarthy. Mrs Larissa McCarthy School Chaplain

SCHOOL CAR PARKING
Parents who pick up or set down children by car are asked to note
the following: ♦ If using the “SOUTH car park (behind the Pre-primary Centre)
enter via Alford Street and then left turn exit into Main Street.
♦ The verge area along Albert Street near the school oval can also be
utilised.
♦ Park in Sylvia Street and cross Main Street using the pedestrian crossing
attended by our crosswalk wardens.
♦ The staff/visitors car parks at the front of the school are for use by the
staff and visitors only and are NOT to be used as a “drop off” or “pick
up” area for students, particularly the car park outside the library.
Thank you for your anticipated support, which can only enhance
the safety of our students
If you shop at Woolworths, it’s easy for your kids, parents, grandparents, staff, neighbours and friends - absolutely anyone, to help our school collect the Earn & Learn stickers to earn new Science, Sports, Maths, English and Arts equipment for our school. The box to place completed sheets or stickers is in the office area. Please see Mrs McCarthy or Christel Newport (P/P & Kindy Mum), if you
