Disclosures and ConflictsI am employed by the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy and I receive a salary from them. I do research as a part of my job and this research is funded through a variety of sources. Current research is funded by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores’ Foundation, Quidel, Ferris State University College of Pharmacy.I am employed by Walgreens. I participate in the Walgreens retirement funding program which includes the provision of Walgreens stock. I own <0.1% of the available single stock in this company.I am a mentor in the on-line PharmD program for Creighton University School of Pharmacy & Health Professions and I am paid a consulting fee approximating an hourly wage for this service.I am a partner in BBfN, LLC; A Health and Safety Consulting CompanyI am a consultant for the Lincoln Southwest Surgical Center. The surgery center pays a discounted hourly wage directly to an account in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy for this service and the Surgery Center allows PharmD students to accompany me on consulting visits.I serve on the Nebraska Medicaid Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. I am paid mileage to attend these meetings.I do not accept speaker’s funding directly from any member of the drug manufacturing or distribution industry. My programs may be indirectly funded by these entities, but I do not solicit such funding on behalf of anyone. Furthermore, it would be impossible to buy my opinions, you will recognize that as fact before the completion of this program. My spouse, my parents and my adult children all participate in the stock market and own individual stocks. I do not know which stocks they own at any given time. I can assure this audience that no member of my family nor combination of members of my family own 1% or more of any publicly traded company.Several members of my family belong to professions credentialed by the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services or the corresponding Departments in other states including: Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Colorado. My husband is a hydro-geologist, my father is a pharmacist, our daughter is a pharmacist, our son is a fitness trainer, my brother is an athletic trainer. Additionally I have a maternal uncle who is a pharmacist and we have a daughter-in-law who is a nurse. At present the only member of my family other than me, who holds a health credential and lives in my home is my husband.I have filed the necessary paperwork with the University of Nebraska and the State of Nebraska to meet the Sunshine Law. You are welcome to access my information on their respective web-sites. My full and legal name is: Allison Mari Dering-Anderson

Prescription Drugs are the leading cause of accidental deathPrescription drugs have outpaced car accidents as the reason for accidental death!!

Nearly all are related to an opiate or an opiate in combination with other central nervous system depressants.

Page 5: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Where do they get Rx drugs?

Most are NOT from the internetMost are from classmates & family members

Page 6: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

AWARxEMore than 50% of people who abused prescription drugs in 2009 & 2010 got them from friends or family for free

From “friends”Approaching Classmates

Page 8: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

From “friends”Selling or giving away a drug prescribed for you hurts 2 people

The patient isn’t getting the drug

The buyer could be seriously harmed

Page 9: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Is your child taking any of these?

Stimulants – Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse, etc

Pain Relievers – hydrocodone, oxycodone, diazepam, tramadol

Anti-anxiety – Xanax, Ativan, Valium

Page 10: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Do you lock up your alcohol?Do you lock up your drugs? You are asking about access to alcohol before allowing your child to visit someone’s home, are you asking about the prescriptions too?

Messages:These are programs that will not accept you with a drug conviction:

MedicinePharmacy

LawDentistry

Physical therapyThe FBINASA

EtcPharmacists sell drugs, but not in the school parking lot

Page 12: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

From familyDo not save old drugs for any reason. When the need is gone the drugs must leave your home.

Here, try this, it worked for me….

Page 13: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Pain patients should not be responsible for their own drugs Pain meds are to be dosed by someone else

This isn’t a trust issueThis isn’t a “learning to be an adult” issue

This is a crisis.

Even adults shouldn’t dose their own pain meds

Page 14: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

ProblemsThese are prescribed, they must be safe

Heck there are commercials on tv for most of this stuff

It’s just a tablet – what’s the big deal?

Page 15: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Prescriptions are dangerous by definitionIf they weren’t dangerous you could buy them without a prescription

Page 16: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Addressing the advertising

Page 17: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Medicines are always a big deal

Page 18: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

AlcoholEthanol is clearly the most abused & misused over-the-counter drug in the United States today

The problem we’re discussing isn’t alcoholism, it’s a drug interaction & a lifestyle problem

Page 19: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

“Don’t die until I can yell at you”

No Tylenol (acetaminophen) with alcohol

No Tylenol with a hangover – your liver is still “drunk” if you’re hung-over

Don’t send Tylenol off to College with them, send ibuprofen instead

Page 20: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Hung Over = Brain DamageIt’s not a warning, it’s a sign that the damage has been done.

Page 21: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Our Agreement:I do not approve of breaking the law

I really do not approve of drunk drivers

You have to kiss my cheek when you get home

Call me, I will come get you* I won’t yell, I probably won’t talk to you* You will live so I can yell at you, tomorrow* Tonight, I’m glad you’re alive and you didn’t kill

anyone else being a selfish drunk.

Page 22: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

I will not give you the “silent treatment”, but I may need a cooling off time – so I don’t say things I don’t mean.

Page 23: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

Our “secret” agreementI will take any of your friends home too

If you don’t want to go or if you want to come home, blame me. I’m the grown-up. I’ll try to act as if I am.

If you ask, “Mom, do you think ….” I know that means you really want me to say no.

Page 24: Teens Prescription Drugs & Alcohol Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson Presentation November 2015

What would a good mom do?
