Why Should I Choose TEEMS?
TEEMS programs are based on current research in teacher education and support planning, teaching, and reflection with colleagues who are committed to excellence in education. The programs also include major, in-depth practicum / teaching experience at the appropriate levels.
What is TEEMS?
TEEMS is a cohort program that encourages and supports planning, teaching, and reflection with colleagues who are committed to excellence in teaching.
TEEMS students do not have teaching certification prior to entering the program.
All TEEMS programs lead to renewable certification(T-5)and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree
The program requires a minimum of 45 credit hours of graduate-level coursework (36 for MAT Math and MAT Science).

Provisionally-Licensed Teaching
“Provisionally-licensed” refers to a person who is employed by a school system to teach on a temporary basis until they can earn certification. They must pass the GACE I (Program Admission Assessment) and GACE II (content area) exams to qualify for employment.
Provisionally-licensed teachers can teach up to 3 years while working on renewable certification.
Provisionally-licensed teachers follow the same program requirements as the other students in TEEMS programs. The primary difference is that the school where the provisionally-licensed teacher is teaching serves as the field placement for the practicum and student teaching experiences.
Qualifications for TEEMSMust hold an undergraduate degree from an
accredited college or university.Degree in related field is desirable but not
required for all programs. See slides 31-36 for program-specific requirements.
Transfer credits - You can transfer only coursework that is taken at the graduate level. You must take at least 27 hours of graduate level coursework in our department and college.
No teaching experience is required.You must have a 2.5 or higher

Field Experiences
Field ExperiencesOur partner schools are located in the Atlanta
metro area. In keeping with the mission of GSU, we strive to place students in culturally diverse school settings.
Three types of placementsOpening of School Experience: approximately 80 hours:
one week of pre-planning and one week of the first week of school (sign up for a zero-credit hour course)
Fall Practicum – 20 hours per week: at least 3 days per week for 14 weeks. During Practicum 1, teacher candidates learn about the day-to-day experiences of planning and teaching in classrooms.
Student Teaching – 8 hours per day, 5 days per week for 14 weeks. During student teaching, you gradually take on the role of “the teacher” with guidance from your mentor teacher at the school. This experience is designed to more closely resemble the actual responsibilities that teaching requires.
Field ExperiencesFor both practicum and student teaching,
you will have regular observations and feedback by your university supervisor and mentor teacher. You will also have written assignments that are a part of the course(s).
Most graduate students take 9-12 hours during practicum and student teaching.
Follow the school’s calendar for holidays and vacation times.
Reliable transportation is required (e.g., car or carpool). While some schools are located on MARTA routes, those opportunities are not guaranteed.

Questions
What if I don’t meet the general requirements necessary for entry into the graduate program in the College of Education?
All criteria must be met for acceptance by the OAA in the COE. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for admission, you may write a letter of appeal. You should also include any supporting documents that demonstrate your ability to do coursework at the graduate level. Program faculty make the final decision regarding entrance into graduate programs.
If I have a provisional teaching license, are the application procedures different?
No. All candidates for admission must complete the application process as described before. You should include a copy of your provisional license in your application.
If I have a provisional teaching license, can I enroll as a full-time student in the TEEMS program?
Yes. Program coursework (except in summer) necessary to complete this program is offered at 4:30 p.m. or later so you can attend program classes in the evenings.
If I already have a graduate degree, do I have to submit GRE scores?
Yes. The College accepts only GRE scores for admittance to the programs. Scores should be less than 5 years old.
How long will it take to complete the program?

Is it possible to work at an outside job while doing this program?
Working an outside job is strongly discouraged during the program and is not allowed at all during student teaching (except for provisional teachers).
Program is time-consuming and intensive. The field experiences require you to be in the
school for 4 - 8 hours a day. The projects are demanding and cannot be
completed in short periods of time. Working collaboratively with other students is an
essential part of the coursework. Your availability to work with your colleagues will be essential, and outside work often interferes.
What if I don’t want a master’s degree? Can I still earn only teaching certification in this program?
Yes. However, you must meet the general requirements for entry into the graduate school and you must be fully admitted to the TEEMS program. If you choose not to pursue the master’s degree, you can take only the coursework necessary to complete certification.
If I plan to complete my undergraduate degree in the spring semester and I wish to enroll in graduate school, can I still apply to the TEEMS program that will start in the summer?
Yes. In your letter of application, please make it clear that you are in your last semester of undergraduate coursework and will graduate with an undergraduate degree in a related content field. If you are accepted into the program, and you present faculty with your current transcripts in early May showing that you have your undergraduate degree, you may begin in June with the other accepted candidates.
If I graduate in the Maymester of the summer I wish to enroll, can I still apply to the TEEMS program which will start in the summer?
No. You must wait until the following summer to begin your program work. The Maymester at Georgia State University is considered summer school, and your undergraduate degree will not be conferred until August. However, you may apply in January to begin our program in the fall following your graduation.
Do I have to pass the GACE II to graduate?
No. However, teacher candidates must take (but not necessarily pass) the GACE II for program completion. In addition, you will be required to pass the GACE II for certification. Once you complete all requirements for certification, including the GACE II in your content area(s), the COE will recommend you for certification in your content field(s) to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC).
What are the exit requirements for this program?

The Middle Level Education program prepares teachers in two areas of concentration. Participants in the Middle Level Education program must choose one of the concentration areas available: Language Arts and Social Studies education OR Mathematics and Science education.
All applicants must meet the basic requirements for admission in the graduate program of the College of Education.
EnglishAn undergraduate or graduate degree in English or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university (Coursework must have included at least 24 semester hours of upper-division or equivalent acceptable credit in English content, including a minimum of three semester hours in each of the following areas: American literature, British literature, written composition, and history or structure of the English language.)
MathematicsAn undergraduate or graduate degree in mathematics or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university (Coursework must have included at least 24 semester hours of upper-division or equivalent acceptable credit in mathematics content). Applicants are expected to have a minimum of three semester hours in each of four of the following areas: modern or abstract algebra [similar to Math 4441], linear algebra [similar to Math 4435], college geometry [similar to Math 4301], mathematical statistics [similar to Math 4751], and advanced calculus [similar to Math 4661]. Applicants who do not have the prerequisite content and are currently teaching under a provisional certificate may be allowed to complete their remaining portion of the requirement as part of the MAT program with consent of the program advisor. If additional coursework is needed, the time needed to complete the MAT program may be extended.
ScienceFor traditional entry into the MAT TEEMS science program, candidates should have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a science discipline (or what is deemed to be the equivalent of such, based on Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission requirements) from a regionally-accredited college or university. This is typically defined as a set of foundational courses plus 24 upper-division credits. For non-traditional entry (i.e., individuals holding a provisional certificate and currently teaching), candidates must have at least 18 credits in one of the traditional science fields (earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics) prior to participation in the cohort portion of the program. These candidates must complete coursework totaling 24 semester hours in one of those four disciplines (which can represent foundational, upper-division, and graduate courses and can include courses brought into the program) prior to successful completion of the program.
Social StudiesAn undergraduate or graduate degree in economics, geography, history, or political science is preferred. Students with an undergraduate degree in other social sciences may also be accepted. However, if an applicant does not hold a degree in economics, geography, history, or political science, the student must complete the equivalent of a major in one of the four areas by the end of the program.
ESOLThe Master of Arts major in Reading, Language, and Literacy Education provides initial teacher certification in ESOL for individuals who have an interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages in K-12 settings. The course of study meets the requirements for professional certification at the initial level in ESOL and the requirements for a Reading Endorsement.
To be considered for the MAT in ESOL program, candidates must have completed at least one (1) academic year of university foreign language sequence (3 quarters or 2 semesters of the same language) OR successful completion of one (1) semester of a non-Western language, OR one (1) year of living or studying abroad as an adult, OR the acquisition of English as a second language for non-native English speakers. Provisionally licensed teachers in ESOL are also accepted into the MAT ESOL program.
