Hinamatsuri Musical Performance
March 3 is Hinamatsuri, a girls day holiday, in Japan. Special musical guests came to our school and played “Hina Matsuri” (the traditional Hina-matsuri song), “Sakura Sakura” (traditional Japanese spring song), “Hana wa saku” (Japanese pop-song composed after the Tohoku Earthquake), and “Minuette” from “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” (by W.A. Mozart) (String quartet). We are so very appreciative to the OIST Hokulani group members for the opportunity our children had to appreciate live music. Special thank you to Akiko Soemori (Flute), Fuka Koja, (Violin), Yana Manaeva (Violin), Kazumi Inoha (Viola), Tomohiko Teruya (Cello, and Tomoko Ono (Koto). The music captivated the children and made it a very special day!

Classroom Update
Some of the best views of Okinawa are visible from OIST campus. The Kukuru class takes daily
walks in their strollers. Together, they can view all the different colors of the ocean and feel the fresh
air on their face. The teachers talk to the children about the nature they can see and hear. They stop
and play on the soft grass and can enjoyed special events such as the CDC art exhibit. It is great to be
raised in this wonderful environment.
Baby sign language basics offers multiple benefits for children:
-Reducing frustration
-Facilitating language development
-Encouraging gesturing,
pointing
The Kukuru class teachers are using some baby sign language
each day. If you are interested in using baby sign language with your child please let us
know and we can share a basic guide sheet, and you can work
together with your baby at home.

Toddlers Have Sushi Making Skills
Things taste better when you make it yourself! All children at Tedako felt as sense of pride and accomplishment when they make their sushi roll! Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring in Japan and it is observed on February 3rd every year. It is a known as a festive day to drive away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them by throwing soybeans to a demon (Oni) and eat an uncut sushi roll for good luck. The CDC made the sushi roll as cooking activity on Setsubun and ate them as an afternoon snack. Yum yum!
In the toddler classrooms, we make sure to balance quiet and active times. The children love quiet activities, such as playing with puzzles and drawing, but when the music comes on, they get moving! The class stands up and start dancing, jumping and stomping feet along with songs! Incorporating music and movement into early childhood education can help young children with development, social interaction and language growth.

Nuuji and Kafuu Sand Play
Classroom Update
Nuuji and Kafuu classes have been working together and using their imaginations to create all kinds of culinary treats in the sand pit! They really enjoy creating cakes, pies, pizzas and cookies together and pretend to sit and enjoy eat the “treats” together. They talk about their ingredients and their teachers encourage them to describe what they are making, the flavor and the type of food. They take turns to stir the “mixture” and go find the ingredients to add to their bowls. This is great imagination play and is a perfect example of superb social interaction and understanding. This strengthens their language skills, lexical knowledge, teamwork and positive social interaction. Not to mention, it is great fun!

Strawberry Farm Last month the Kugani and Shinka classes went on their annual strawberry picking field trip. It`s always one of the most popular field trips that we do. The children are always so excited to go, pick, and eat! Going on this field trip is also a great opportunity to teach the children about plants. Rather than just talk about life cycle in class and show pictures, we were able to show the children all the different stages of the strawberry life cycle. They were able to touch, smell and taste! Talk about a sensory experience! From the tiny flowers that will eventually become the strawberries, to the small green fruit growing, to the big red juicy strawberries that they were eating! We even talked about the importance of the bees too, since there were a few buzzing around. The kids filled their brains with new information, and their stomachs with delicious strawberries!
Last month the Kugani and Shinka classes went on a new field trip to a sugarcane field! It was a great experience for the children to be able to touch and taste the sweet sugarcane. In preparation for this fieldtrip, we taught the kids what sugarcane was, how to get the juice from it, and that sugar comes from sugarcane. We also let them know that they would be going to see and taste some. It was the first time for a lot of the kids to see and actual sugarcane plant. When we arrived to the field, the children were amazed to see how tall the sugarcane actually was. They were also surprised at how sweet the sugarcane was! It was a great new experience for the children to have.

Kugani and Shinka Class Sensory Activities
During the month of February the Shinka kids had a lot of sensory activities inside and outside of the classroom. They went on two great field trips that really put their senses into overdrive! Inside the classroom was no different. At the beginning of the month we brought in hangers with yarn tied to them. The children lightly wrapped the yarn around their pointer fingers and then put their wrapped fingers in their ears. After that, they banged the hangers into different objects around the classroom and were able to hear the sound waves travelling up the yarn! The kids noticed that when they put their fingers in their ears, the sound was different, compared to just banging the hanger on an object and listening to it as they normally would. It was fun to see the smiles on their faces when they heard the different sound. We also had some new fish bowls that we put in the sensory table. We filled the table with water, and put a little water in each fish bowl. We then added 2 different primary colors to the fish bowls with water. The kids did not know what to do at first, then someone emptied one bowl of the colored water into the plain water. That was all it took, the other children then stared dumping and mixing and spinning the bowls. They were surprised to see that the water had slowly gone from 1 color, to 2 colors, to a whole new color! They had a great time playing with the water, and to make things a bit more fun, we added colorful marbles to the water. The kids put the marbles in the fish bowls and spun them around in the water.
