What We’ve Been Reading

Forrester estimates the mobile payments market reached $12.8 billion in 2012, and will grow at a 48% CAGR to reach $90 billion in 2017. Forrester highlights proximity payments such as geofencing technology and near field communication as the highest growth areas within mobile payments. With major players such as Isis and Google Wallet beginning to provide their mobile payment solutions to consumers in late 2012, it appears the market may finally be on the cusp of explosive growth. According to a new report from Pike Research, the IT revenue segment of the smart electricity delivery industry grew by over 20% in 2012 to $9.4 billion globally, driven by further smart grid deployment. Growth in the smart energy industry will create opportunities for IT companies to help utilities manage data and deliver services that help customers control their energy costs. As government spending growth slows, U.S. spending on smart grid devices is expected to level off, but IT spending will continue to rise as utilities need to analyze data collected by new smart meters. Enterprise application software spending is projected to reach $158 billion by 2016, representing a 6.5% CAGR from 2011. The fastest growing segments include web conferencing and teaming, enterprise content management, customer relationship management, and supply chain management. Read the full article here.
