KEYNOTE: Dr. Jacqueline Ryan Vickery

Turn on the news, flip through TV channels, browse the magazine racks and it probably won’t take you long to find a story about

a teen getting into trouble with digital media. From bullying, sexting, and addiction, we are constantly reminded of the dangers

threatening young people online. Parents and teachers are frequently told that they need to protect children from the potential

harms just lurking behind the screen. But why don’t we also hear about all the positive and empowering opportunities

available to young people via digital media? And even more so, why aren’t we talking about the ways teachers and parents can

help youth embrace these opportunities?

In this talk media and youth scholar Dr. Jacqueline Ryan Vickery explains why, when it comes

to youth and digital media, we’re often worried about the wrong things. Rather than trying

to help young people avoid risks, what students really need are adults who will help them

safely navigate the web in healthy, positive, and empowering ways. Digital media open up

new opportunities for young people to participate in the creation of their own learning ecologies and media

cultures. But they need help managing distractions, deciphering information, and participating in public

spaces. Dr. Vickery turns popular risk discourse on its head by arguing that new media can be powerful tools

for helping young people become civically engaged citizens who safely and critically consume and produce

information, who benefit from networks of peers and adults, and who are capable of managing healthy

boundaries. But in order to do so, schools and teachers must play an active role in shaping learning ecologies

and leveraging digital media in ways that create more equitable pathways of opportunity.

Key topics: critical digital literacy, digital activism, scaffolding, network literacy
