Welcome to the session Technology: Classroom Applications & Teacher Networking. We know its hard to keep up with all the latest applications out there so we have found some of the best to share. We will provide you the opportunity today of actually getting on these sites and getting your hands on these programs.

If we dont get in depth enough with all of them, have no fear, you will have on-line access to this PowerPoint and handouts for each of these applications. They are posted on our WIKI so you will be able to get all this info when you get back to school. http://child-fans.wikispaces.com/

*In 2011, there should be no debate as to the role of technology in classrooms. When children as young as three are using cell phone applications, computers, Xboxes, ipods, etc. what does that mean for us as educators? As CHILD and TEAMS teachers we already know the importance of using technology.

Show video of Mr. Winkle(click on Schools in the 21st Century)

*Most of us use technology to some degree in our classrooms. There are 3 basic phases of educational technology use. Lets see where most of us currently fall! (Click on three phases to describe and then ask for hands in each level. These are not necessarily sequential but many of us stop at Phase One and Two and never move to Phase Three which is where true 21st Century skills are developed. We will focus today on Level Three- empowering students to become producers and creators of content not passive observers. *As a teacher how do you find out about some of the 21st technologies that are available? We are going to start with a couple applications that are geared for you as a learner! The following applications for teachers provide support and on-line collaboration. Some of the applications may be blocked at your school site but we want to introduce you to these and you can access at home if desired. We have included the directions for you to sign up on your own. NING:::We have started a NING for you.

*These are examples of other NINGS you can join- for sharing and learning from others. Lets take a few minutes and explore some of these.

Now you can go to the link at the bottom of the slide and sign up for your own free educational Ning.*A Wiki is simply an online collaborative tool that can be created and edited by people you invite. It is like a website except that many people build it together. Some districts create a district wide wiki portal to consolidate resources.

We have created a WIKI for CHILD teachers to join and add to. Log in and look at our Wiki. (Check out Teacher Testimonies page- I just added a video.)

This is where we will post all our handouts and PowerPoint for this session.

    My log-in : [email protected] joyful09

*PB Works is a free wiki space geared for educators. You will start to see how teachers are using many of these tools together- wiki, blog, podcast, Glogster, epals, etc.

Show an example of one primary and one intermediate:1. Mrs. Davisons K class- go to the side bar and click on the Life Cycle of a Bird podcasts and Writing about the Forests.

    2. Mrs. Shanahans 5th grade class- they use Glogster, click on Voci photo of her, click on Science-Creatures to see wiki pages created by students for an assignment.

Have them go to the free educator sign up page on the bottom of the slide.*Qwiki is a new site that would be a perfect site for doing research. It is similar to a Wiki. Students can research a topic and add content to make it more of a Phase Three activity.

(Show an example of how it works.)

*A blog is simply an on-line diary or journal. We saw on some of the class Wikipages where teachers are using Blogs to encourage intentional and real life writing applications.

Show an example of 1st grade and 4/5 math.

Edublog and Kidblog are both good sites. If you have a google account you can sign up for a free Blogger.

*Lets hear from a child about what their 21st century classroom should look like?*Now were going to get into some cool new tools for you and your students to use.

PowerPoint is OUT and Prezi is IN! Once you see what Prezi can do you will never use PowerPoint again. Educators sign up for free. Prezi is a Web-based tool, so theres nothing to download. You create an account, and all your presentations are stored online, so you can access them from any computer with an Internet connection (you also have the option to download your presentations).

Rather than individual slides, you build a Prezi on a single, infinitely large workspace. You can zoom in and out of specific slides, videos, photos, or text to take your audience through your presentation. Its great for showing the big picture and then zooming in on all the details. The motion and the ease of integrating multimedia are what make Prezis so compelling. http://prezi.com/gco-vb9vvvy2/30-things-about-me/ http://prezi.com/fo-kysa0tzhk/a-conceptual-framework-for-education/

*Log in to my Prezi site ([email protected] joyful10) and see the example of Reflection Flip Charts.

Create a Prezi from scratch.2. Create a Prezi from a PowerPoint.3. Create a Prezi from another Prezi!4. Invite someone to work on a Prezi with you.

Then have them go to the link at the bottom of the slide to sign up for their own.*Glogster is a Web-based tool that allows you to easily create multi-media posters called glogs. Users can design glogs with their own style, so students can express their individual voices while still communicating what theyve learned.

Glogs are great because theyre displayed much like single, self-contained Web pages. Theyre a lot easier to build than Web pages, so some teachers even make them, with videos and links, to guide students through an assignment or use as a webpage navigation tool like we saw in one of the classroom wikis.

Log in with my log in and look at example. winkJR, joyful10.. They can log in using the link at the bottom and create a free account.*1. Remember the example of a Glog that we saw on Mrs. Shanahans wiki page.

    2. Here is another example of an authors page for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.*Digital Storytelling should be a part of every classroom- all subjects. Were going to look at a couple of programs that are easy to use and free.

Storybirds are short, art-inspired stories you make to share, read, and print.Read them like books, play them like games, and send them like greeting cards.

    1. Log in and go to READ where you can show a book. (winkerice joyful10)

    2. Create a simple book. Show how you choose artwork by artist or theme and simply add text.

    3. Have them create an account. Teachers are free!

*This is another excellent free digital storytelling site. Create an account and start creating stories with your class. Students can record themselves reading the story! A great way to share stories with parents.*Dipity is another relatively new site and FREE to educators. Dipity allows you to find, create and embed interactive timelines. You can search for timelines on different topics, create a timeline or use Web 2.0 tools to generate a timeline from social content.

    Log inUsername: winkericePassword: joyful10

Show some timelines.. (I started one for Sallys life!) Create one.*Wordle is a application for generating word clouds from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Tagxedo takes Wordle to another level.http://www.tagxedo.com/app.html*You may be familiar with Skype for personal purposes. You can now use Skype in the classroom. Just recently released, Skype in the classroom is making it easier to connect via video to another teacher or classroom around the world. *A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world.

Users can doodle while commenting, use multiple identities, and pick which comments are shown through moderation. VoiceThreads can even be embedded to show and receive comments on other websites and exported to MP3 players or DVDs to play as archival movies.

*Voki is a very simple program that allows you to create an avatar who speaks! You can import text to be spoken or record it with your own voice. Voki for education has lesson plans and ideas for teachers.

Click the link on the bottom of the page to see a sample.

I also put one on our Wiki page.*Every day new Web 2.0 applications are being created! Take your class into the 21st Century and watch the excitement build. Here are some other applications and videos that you can check out on your own time.*Thank you for coming and we hope you have been inspired to bring Phase Three technology into your classroom. Start getting your students excited about learning by having them create and collaborate using the tools they LOVE! Remember that this PowerPoint and all the handouts are on our wiki. Make sure to check back regularly for more free technology applications.*
