The Commercial Case for Asset Data Management

Page 8: Technologies Overview Feb 2014

What Do We Mean by Rail Infrastructure Asset Management

Asset management, broadly defined, refers to any system whereby things that are of

value to an entity or group are monitored and maintained.

A systematic process of operating , maintaining, and upgrading assets cost-effectively

so that the greatest return or best possible service to users is achieved

Data management is clearly a key part of this

Infrastructure Maintenance Costs and Variability

Harmonised benchmarking results from a range of rail operators in Europe show:

Average costs of Eur73.9k per km for maintenance

 Split 50/50 renewals and maintenance

 But very variable

 Best practice 50% less!

 Worst 100% more!

Huge scope to improve Ref: UIC LICB Benchmarking Study

Page 10: Technologies Overview Feb 2014

The Business Case for Rail Infrastructure Asset Management

The results show that some of the better performers achieve this through having

better information with which to drive the maintenance process

Asset management typically costs about 2% to 3% of the cost of maintenance

Properly implemented it can deliver a 10% to 20% maintenance cost

reduction………….a significant return on investment

Unattended Track Geometry Measurement

 New track geometry measurement equipment

compact and automated for fitment to normal service

trains:

 Dramatically reduced cost

 Much more frequent measurement

Frequent measurement provides an early indication of

developing faults and a clearer understanding of

deterioration rates and causes

This allows the right maintenance to be carried out at

the optimum time Sometimes at an early stage where it can be seen to be cost effective

Sometimes, where safe, as late as possible to minimise intervention costs

 Proven concept

In addition to dedicated measurement vehicles we provide unattended train-borne measurement systems to a range of customers as highlighted below. These are applied to in-service freight and passenger vehicles and measure a range of parameters including track geometry and ride quality. They offer the advantages of more frequent measurement at lower cost, providing earlier identification of underlying faults, better trend analysis and predictability
