To compile the information which is not related to

    become one group in sequence.

By chunking information into smaller pieces.

Pieces of information that hang together in a

    meaningful way. Examples:

    i) synchronize and sing the ABC song.

    ABCDEFG, HIJKLMN, OPQRSTU, VWXYZ

    5/29

A diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged

around a central key word or idea.

Used to generate, visualize, structure andclassify ideas and as an aid in study,

    organization, problem solving, decision

    making and writing.

Also used as a mnemonic technique

Learn from the general - specific

Student feel driven to jump right in and tackle thedetails of a new course before they get the bigpicture.

E.g.: (before beginning your next reading

assignment.)skim it for the general idea. Can also use this atthe beginning of a course. Skim over the readingassignments for the entire course.

This technique works best at the beginning of aterm.

If get lost, step back and take a look at the bigpicture. The details might make more sense.

Make it meaningful Know what you want from your education,

then look for connections between what you

want and what you are studying.

E.g.: if you are bogged down in quadratic

equations, stand back for a minute. Thinkabout how that math course relates to your

goal of becoming an electrical engineer.

when information helps you get somethingyou want, it is easier to remember.

That is one reason why it pays to be specific

    about what you want.

    Create associations

The data is already in your memory is arrange

according to a scheme that makes sense to

    you.

When new data is introduced, you can recall it

more effectively if you store it near similar or

    related data.

    Relax

When a person is relaxed, he/she absorbs newinformation quicker and recall it with greater

    accuracy.

Students who cannot recall information during a

final exam, when they are nervous, often canrecite the same facts later, when they are relaxed.

Relaxation : a state of alertness, free of tension.

During which our minds can play with newinformation, roll it around, create associations

with it and apply many of the other techniques.

    12/29

Create pictures Draw diagrams. Make cartoons. Use them to

    connect facts and illustrate relationships.

Relationships within and among abstractconcepts can be seen and recalled easily whenthey are visualized.

The key is to use your imagination.

When you create a picture of a concept, you areanchoring the information in two parts of your

brain. This increases chances of recalling that

information. To visualize relationships effectively, create action.

    13/29

Recite and report 1st, you get the physical sensation in your

throat, tongue and lips when voicing theconcept.

2nd, hear it. The combined result is synergistic,

just as it is when draw pictures. E.g.: reciting silently, in your head, can be

useful (in the library). But it is not effective asmaking noise.

Repeat a concept out loud until you know it,then say it 5 more times. Recitation also workswhen you recite concepts in your own words.

    Write it down

Writing a note to yourself helps remember an

idea, even you never look at the note again.

Writing engages a different kind of memory

    than speaking.

It prompts us to be more logical, coherent and

    complete.

Written review reveal gaps in knowledge that

oral reviews miss, just as oral reviews revealgaps that mental reviews miss.

    Reduce your interference

Find a quiet place that is free from distraction. 2 hours worth of studying in front of the

television might be worth 10 minutes of

    studying where it is quiet.

If you have 2 hours and want to study and

watch television, it is probably better to study

for an hour and watch television for an hour.

Doing one at a time increases your ability to

    remember.

    16/29

    Use daylight

Study the most difficult subjects duringdaylight hours.

Many people can concentrate more effectively

    during the day.

The early morning hours can be especially

productive, even for people who hate to get

    up with the sun.

    17/29

    Over learn

This technique is especially effective forproblem solving.

Do the assign problems, then do more

problems. Make up your own problems and work those.

Pretest yourself in this way, the potential

rewards are speed, accuracy and greater

    confidence at exam time.

    18/29

Escape the short-term memory trap Is different than the kind of memory you will

    need during exam week.

E.g.: most of us can look at an unfamiliar seven

digit phone number once and remember it long

enough to dial it. Try recalling that number thenext day.

Short term memory can decay after a few

minutes and it rarely lasts more than several

    hours.

A short review within minutes or hours of a study

session can move material from STM into LTM.

    19/29

Distribute learning Marathon study sessions are not effective. You

can get more done in three two hour sessions

than in one six hour session.

E.g.: when you are studying for one exam, study

for an hour or two, then wash the dishes. Returnto your studies for a while, then call a friend.

Even while you are in deep conversation, part of

your mind will be reviewing what you studied.

You will get more done if you take regular break

and you can use them as mini rewards.

Choose what not to store in memory

Decide what is essential to remember from aclass. Extract the core concepts.

Ask why you will be tested on, as well as what

    you want to remember.

Then apply memory techniques to those

    ideas.

  • 8/9/2019 Techniques to Enhance Memory

    22/29

    Combine memory techniques

All of these memory techniques work evenbetter in combination with each other.

Choose two or three techniques to use on a

    particular assignment.

After you take a few minutes to get an

overview of an assignment, draw a quick

picture to present the main point.

    Combining memory techniques is like

combining sight, sound and touch when you

    study. The effect is synergistic.

    23/29

    Remember something else

When you are stuck and you cannotremember something else that is related to it.

Information is stored in the same area of the

    brain as similar information.

You can unblock your recall by stimulating that

    area of your memory.

A brainstorm is a good memory jog.

When you are stumped in a test, start writing

down lots of answers to related questions and

the answer you likely to appear.

    25/29

Use it before you lose it

Even information stored in LTM becomesdifficult to recall if we dont use it regularly.

To remember something, access it a lot. Read

it , write it, speak it, listen it and apply it. Thenfind some way to make contact with the

    material regularly.

Each time you do that, you widen the neural

pathway to the material and make it easier to

    recall the next time.

  • 8/9/2019 Techniques to Enhance Memory

    26/29

    Remember, you never forget

You may trouble recalling something fromyour memory, but never really forget it.

All you have to do is find where you stored it.

Many people use the flip side of this

technique and get the opposite results.

An alternative is to speak more positively or at

least accurately. You can also use affirmations

that support you as you develop yourmemory.

    28/29

    Comes from the Greek.

Methods for remembering information that is

    otherwise quite difficult to recall.

A word or a sentence which is intended to be

easier to be remember than the thing it stand

    for.
