Specially brought to you by the Chemistry Teacher - Miss Goh
Techniques for the SubjectMastery of Chemistry
May 2011
Concepts, Important yet Basic..Get It Clear!!
MEMORISE BASIC BUT
IMPORTANT CONCEPTS
Memorize important facts and processes
at least know how to write correct chemicalequation, do simple calculation and understandbasic chemical concept likes Mole Concept.
You must Note that there are only a few typesof calculations in Chemistry compared toPhysics so please master all the calculations.
Try to learn them yourselves reading the
reference books first. If you really couldntunderstand them, you should seek help fromyour class or tuition teacher.
Memorize the colours of chemical substances, understand the salt preparation process.(should work effectively although some mightargue that memorizing facts is the wrong way oflearning.)
Strongly recommended to understand eachconcept and fact before you start memorizingthem.
Practise past-year O Level papers / OtherSchool Papers Past-year O Level questions will repeat from
time to time because of the limited scopecovered in O Level Chemistry syllabus.
Practice makes perfect. Try every questionand learn from your mistakes.
For essay questions, get the marking schemafrom your teachers so that you can see howthe marks are allocated and which points orkeywords deserve full mark, etc. Learningfrom the essay marking schemes is a highly
effective method!
The most important key
is to go through every
chapter and learn the
basic concept, then
understand its concept by
doing some practice
questions. Doing
questions will let you
know how to apply this
concept.

In Biology, where you need 75% of MEMORIZING skill and25% UNDERSTANDING of your text. Mean while for Physics, its the other way round where you need only 25%MEMORIZING skill (my friend derives the formulae other thanmemorizes it!!) and 75% understanding. Chemistry is someway in the middle and should be the easy for all. You needhalf memory and half understanding, i.e. you are not onlymemorize the formulae and concept, you need to apply themas well.
