Efficient Protection from Damp andWater for Buildings, Cellars, Under-ground Parking Lots, and Tunnels.

Water – A “Pressing” Problem

According to scientific studies, damageto subgrade building structures ranksthird in the damage statistics of buil-dings. To a large extent, the – sometimesextensive – damages caused by moisturepenetration in cellars, for instance, occursdue to previously wrong assessment ofunderground water pressure, resulting inthe selection of unsuitable protectionmeasures.

Having reached the ground in the form of precipitation, water finds its own way.If it infiltrates the soil swiftly and withoutdelay, a building will not be exposed towater pressure. If precipitating waterseeps away only slowly, however, waterpressure will continue to act on a buil-ding as long as precipitation continues. An equivalent situation occurs whenever

 4

underground water infiltrates permeablesubsoil layers until it reaches a building. The two last-described situations occurfairly frequently.

Things get tough whenever the soil isimpermeable, so that any rainwater iseffectively prevented from seeping away.In this case, building walls will be perma-nently exposed to water pressure.

The planning of waterproofing, drainage, and protection systems depends largelyon which of these three situations ofwater exposure is present. A careful inve-stigation of the structure of the soil aswell as all other relevant factors, such asthe characteristics of the landscape istherefore absolutely vital and important.

Choosing the correct waterproofingsystem depends on hydrostatic pressure

conditions, always remembering that lesscomplex waterproofing systems are lessfailure-prone and, therefore, considerablysafer. Efficient drainage can be a greathelp in many of these cases. It highly sim-plifies the construction of the water-proofing layer by relieving the load cau-sed by dammed-up seepage water.

Finally, no waterproofing system can existwithout effective protection from mecha-nical impacts. Even the best protectionlayer cannot fulfill its duty if, for instance,it is injured by sharp-edged rocks duringbackfilling.

Damp control in buildings is a complexproblem which, however, is easy to besolved for planners and installers whodecide to go for a system solution whichprovides for all relevant requirements anddetails. A system solution called DELTA®.

Basic European Standards

EN 13252, EU-wide.EN 13252 is a standard of great impor-tance for protection and drainagesystems: It specifies the mandatory pro-perties of geotextiles and geotextile-rela-ted products that are essentially used indrainage systems to perform the functi-ons of filtering, separating, and draining. These properties include tensile strength, dynamic perforation resistance, characte-ristical opening size, water permeability,water-flow capacity in the plane, andmaterial durability.

EN 13252 does not describe minimumrequirements; instead, it specifies themethods to be used in verifying theseproperties in regulations that apply uniformly in all EU member countries. Its quality seal is considered a mark ofoutstanding quality even in many coun-tries that do not belong to the EU. EN 13252 specifies that no recycled

exposed to a load of 20 kN/m2 (plus a certain safety reserve), DELTA®-TERRAXXcan be simply wrapped around the wallsof most cellars thanks to its width of 2.40 m, making the sheet very easy tolay. When applied to perimeter insulationboards, DELTA®-TERRAXX provides thenecessary insulation from contact with thesurrounding soil thanks to its plane reverseface. Its high compressive strength ofabout 400 kN/m2 permits installation atdepths of up to 10 m. In addition, its silver surface gives DELTA®-TERRAXX lowemissivity as well as enhancing its heattransition resistance.

DELTA®-TERRAXX:Ideal Dimensions for Cost-efficientLaying.

Universally applicable, DELTA®-TERRAXXprovides a maximum of safety for cellarwalls from hydrostatic water pressure, seepage, and artesian water. The dimplesfacing the soil form a drainage layer thatextends over the entire surface, excee-ding in its performance the requirementsof DIN 4095. The fused-on geotextilelayer keeps the dimple structure frombeing clogged up. Offering outstandingdrainage performance at 3.1 l/s · m when

DELTA®-DRAIN measurable:An Air Gap of measurable benefit.

In addition to providing outstanding drai-nage and protection, DELTA®-DRAINcreates an air gap on the side facing thefoundation wall which serves to conductwater and may, whenever required inspecial circumstances, form a vapour-pressure levelling layer. The flow capacityof DELTA®-DRAIN amounts to 1.5 l/s · munder a load of 20 kN/m2. The materialmay be installed at depths of up to 5 m.

DELTA®-NP DRAIN:Cost-efficient and Highly Reliable.

With its special filtration cloth, this dim-pled sheet features an outstanding com-pressive strength of about 150 kN/m2,acting as a reliable drainage system incivil engineering, supporting walls of alltypes, open tunnels, and undergroundparking lots. Filtering out fine-grainedsoil particles, the filtration cloth ensuresthat the water flow down towards thedrainage pipe remains intact. DELTA®-NP

DRAIN ensures a notable hydrostaticwater pressure relieve on waterproofingsystems. Its special structure with its rela-tively closely-spaced dimples enhances itsdrainage capacity. Its flat edges enable a relatively cheap and easy installation.DELTA®-NP DRAIN complies with therequirements of EN ISO 9001.

Protection and Drainage System for Compression-sensitive VerticalWaterproofing.DELTA®-GEO-DRAIN Quattro.

The Situation:

Subgrade vertical surfaces will beexposed to hydrostatic pressure whe-never seepage water is prevented fromdraining away immediately. By avoidingpressure build-up, a drainage systemconforming to DIN 4095 permits theinstallation of low-priced waterproofingand eliminates the need for expensivetanking structures.

The drainage system consists of twolevels. A vertical drainage sheet gat-hers the water that comes in from thesurrounding soil and guides it down-ward, where it is carried away in adrain pipe installed at foundation level. The upper edge of the drainagesystem may prove vulnerable if themoulding cap that protects it is notinstalled properly. In that case, watermay collect between the waterproofingand the drainage surface. Water runningdown the facade constitutes a similarrisk if the upper sealing strip has notbeen expertly applied.

While synthetically-modified bitumencoatings bridge cracks and form permanently elastic waterproofingsystems, they are always compression-sensitive. In such cases, point and lineloads must be avoided.

DELTA®-GEO-DRAIN Quattro:Reliable Water Drainage.

Because of its special dimple design, this4-ply sheet is highly compression-resistant,so that any structural waterproofing coatsare dependably protected from damage. With its disproportionately large drainagecapacity it may be used in situationswhere great volumes of water need to behandled. The micro-perforation of the slipfilm allows any water penetrating betweenit, and the dimpled sheet proper, to drainaway through a fused-on nonwoven cloth.Any water will drain away safely throughthis additional layer, even if the moulding

cap has not been properly fixed in place. This permanently prevents water fromgathering between the bitumen coatingand the slip film. In addition, the slip filmensures that soil movements are nottransmitted to the waterproofing.

Protection System for Compression-resistant Vertical Waterproofing.DELTA®-MS.

DELTA®-MS:Optimum Safety Right from the Start.

The protection of DELTA®-MS is highlyeffective on the foundation wall. Thisdimpled sheet made from special high-density PE safely insulates foundationwalls from the moisture of the soil. Itachieves complete protection of anycompression-resistant waterproofingand/or perimeter insulation. More than1,800 dimples per square metre ensurethat pressure is evenly distributed andpoint loads, including those on perimeterinsulation boards, are kept to a minimum. At about 250 kN/m2, the compressivestrength of the sheet is outstanding.

It is safe for drinking water, will not rot insoil, and gives additional heat insulation. The necessary drainage capacity may beprovided either by a permeable soil or bya heaped-up seepage layer with a mini-mum thickness of 50 cm consisting ofsome mineral material, such as gravellysand (grain size B32). If required, DELTA®-MS may also be used as a vapour-pressurelevelling layer. Its flat overlapping edgesensure precisely-fitting waterproof seams, while the diagonal layout of its dimplesenables the sheet to be bent along astraight line and fitted precisely aroundedges.

The Situation:

To ensure that compression-resistantsurfaces and waterproofing systemswhich transmit forces (e.g. perimeterinsulation boards) remain intact for along time, they must be reliably pro-tected from moisture and damage.

DELTA®-TERRAXX:Extreme Water Flow Is No Problem.

When applied to pressure-resistant struc-tures or waterproof coatings that transmitforces such as, rigid or flexible sealingslurries or cold-setting self-adhesive water-proofing sheets such as DELTA®-THENE,DELTA®-TERRAXX offers a maximum ofsafety. The 2-ply material reliably protectsthe masonry and provides drainage forthe entire surface.

Permanent soil pressure is distributed, and any moisture penetrating the upward-facing filtration cloth is drained away bet-ween the dimples. At about 400 kN/m2,the outstanding compressive strength ofthe dimples ensures unimpeded drainage. When installed under a layer of soil, thepermanent-filtration geotextile preventsthe air gap from being clogged up bysludge. Because of their large drainagecapacity, DELTA®-TERRAXX high-perfor-mance sheets may be used even in appli-

The Situation:

Horizontal ceilings covered with granu-lar material need to be waterproofedfor their protection. At the same time, soil moisture must be drained awaysafely.

Protection from seepage water is nee-ded for horizontal surfaces such as thecovered roofs of underground parkinglots, terraces, and flat garden roofs, aswell as underneath the surface courseof parking decks.

DELTA®-NP DRAIN:Safety from Waterlogging and RootPenetration.

DELTA®-NP DRAIN is simply laid straightfrom the roll on top of a building structu-re or waterproofing layer. It may be easilycut to length with a knife. To facilitateoverlap sealing, each sheet features anundimpled edge strip that is about 10 cmwide. DELTA®-NP DRAIN reliably and permanently protects green underground-garage roofs and parking decks from

moisture penetration. Equipped with aspecial filtration cloth, this dimpled sheetreliably prevents waterlogging and rootpenetration. Installed in earth-coveredceilings, it will bear the weight of awheelbarrow without problems. Whencovered by a layer of soil or gravel of 20 cm or more, it will support a wheeledloader. Thanks to its special structure andits relatively closely-spaced dimples, itsdrainage rate ranges around 2.25 l/s · m.DELTA®-NP DRAIN conforms to EN ISO9001.

Installed under roof terraces and parking lots,DELTA®-TERRAXX and DELTA®-NP DRAIN makesure that any precipitation is drained away safely.

The Situation:

Reinforced floor slabs must be placedon a foundation that will support thespacers bearing the welded wire mesh.Lean concrete as a sub-base coursedemands an extra excavation depth of5 cm. In addition, the cost of installati-on is high, extra equipment is needed, and there is a waiting period. All in all, this means that, particularly where rela-tively large surfaces are concerned, construction is expensive, and progressis slow.

DELTA®-MS Sub-base Course:Less Cost and a faster job.

When using DELTA®-MS as a sub-basecourse, you apply crucial advantagesstraight from the roll: high compressivestrength, minimum installation time, noequipment cost, no additional excavati-on, no waiting period, additional protec-tion of the floor slab from rising damp, and grout loss is effectively preventedfrom leaching downward. DELTA®-MSresists acids, alkalines, oils, and solvents. Its toughness and stiffness enables the

dimpled sheet to bear the weight of people and wheelbarrows, and it willsafely carry the strip-shaped reinforce-ment mesh spacers.

Surface Gas Drainage Systems.DELTA®-GEO-DRAIN Quattro/DELTA®-TERRAXX.

The Situation:

Radon is a radioactive inert gas that isproduced naturally by the decay ofUranium 238. Being an inert gas, it isextremely mobile. Emerging from rockscontaining uranium, it penetratesunnoticed into cellars and flats, expo-sing the inhabitants to long-term pollu-tion. After smoking, radon rankssecond among the causes of lung can-cer! Standards recommended by theEU Commission suggest that morethan 100,000 houses in Germany requi-re rehabilitation.

Methane is a non-poisonous, colour-less, and odourless gas which is produ-ced by the decomposition of woodand other organic matter when ligniteis formed. Methane occurs in the vicini-ty of coal seams and former refusedumps, which includes all hard-coalmining areas that are to be found inquite a number of European countries.Former moorland settled after draina-ge is similarly affected. Air containing4.4 to 16 volume percent of methanemay form an explosive mixture andmay even become flammable if theproportion of methane increases furt-her.

DELTA®-GEO-DRAIN Quattro/DELTA®-TERRAXX:Great Performance at a Fair Price.

To make sure that radon and methanecannot be present in a building in con-centrations high enough to constitute asafety or health hazard, the two gasesmust be able to escape without obstructi-on. Gas drainage normally involves instal-ling a gas-carrying layer of filtrationgravel underneath the floor slab, with thelayer being carried on upwards along thecellar walls to the ground level. This con-tinuous layer of gravel enables gases toescape unobstructed into the ambient air. However, this approach is very complica-ted and cost-intensive. Thanks to their

extreme drainage capacity of 3.1 · 10-3 m2/s,which multiplies by 7 where gas drainageis concerned, and a compressive strengthof 400 kN/m2, both DELTA®-GEO-DRAINQuattro and DELTA®-TERRAXX are idealfor vertical gas drainage when combinedwith a classical filtration gravel layerunderneath the floor slab. It is importantto remember in this context that the topapertures of the drainage sheet shouldbe covered with a layer of gravel toenable the gas to escape into theambient air without difficulty.

Using DELTA® drainage sheets permitscombining gas and water drainage, asboth rain and seepage water will be safely drained away from the building.

The Situation:

Soil moisture and unpressurised seepa-ge water impacting walls and floorslabs are to be found in most cellars.Soil moisture means that the soil ishighly water-permeable, so that it canbe freely infiltrated. No draining isrequired, as the gravel or sand subsoildoes not permit water to build uppressure. Even for relatively imperme-able a waterproofing system can beachieved which, however, requires anintact drainage system. While there aremany waterproofing systems that canbe used in these conditions, they areoften very complex and costly. Somematerials require two steps of applicati-on, while a torch is required for others.

Horizontal concrete floor slabs alsorequire protection from rising damp, which holds particularly true for resi-dential houses without a cellar that arebuilt directly on top of the floor slab.

Waterproofing is also indispensable inbathrooms, balconies, and similar stan-dard housing elements which are notadequately protected by other suitablemeasures. Moisture protection is parti-cularly important in bathrooms instal-led in environments that are sensitiveto moisture. Thus, protection measuresneed to be particularly elaborate inwooden houses, wooden post andbeam constructions, and prefabs.

DELTA®-THENE:The Universal Solution.

Cold-setting self-adhesive and DIN-con-formable, DELTA®-THENE sheets providereliable waterproofing for vertical andhorizontal exterior and interior surfaces.Sheets consist of a combination of a 4-ply cross-laminated special HDPE sheetand a sealing and adhesive layer of bitu-men rubber. Laid straight from the roll, the material safely bridges any cracks inwalls or floors; besides, it is extremely flexible and is completely proof againstdriving rain immediately after it has beenglued on.

Swift, easy and clean installation is a par-ticular advantage in waterproofing theouter walls of cellars that are in contactwith the soil, for sheets can be simply'wallpapered' into place. This being so,they may easily be laid up to 50 % fasterthan conventional waterproofing systems. The printed-on grid makes it easier to cut sheets to size and lay them precisely.Sheets can be installed without troubleeven in very tight excavations because no scaffolding is needed. With DELTA®-THENE, a uniform waterproofing layerhaving the standard thickness of 1.5 mmcan be applied in a single pass. Nocuring or drying time is required, so thatprotection, drainage, and/or perimeter

insulation layers may be installed and theexcavation filled up immediately afterDELTA®-THENE has been applied.Combined with DELTA®-TERRAXX protec-tion and drainage sheets, DELTA®-THENEforms a complete high-quality water-proofing, protection, and drainagesystem that can be installed with conside-rable savings in time.

In horizontal waterproofing applications,DELTA®-THENE can be applied at least50 % faster than conventional weldedbituminous sheets. No torch is required, and connections between the material and

plastic windows or doors are unproble-matic. Any damage caused in theDELTA®-THENE layer by subsequent acti-vities may be easily repaired by gluing ona patch.

Floor-heating coils or pipes laid out on aDELTA®-THENE surface may be held inplace with strips cut from the self-adhesivesheet. Nor is it problematic to connectDELTA®-THENE to Damp Proof Coursesmade of plastic, for the sheets will adherevery well to almost all types of plasticeven without a primer. However, contactsurfaces must always be clean, bitumen-resistant, and free from dust.

Large surfaces can be sealed easily and quickly with DELTA®-THENE. 17

Damp Proof Course (DPC) at thebuilding’s basement.DELTA®-MAUERWERKSSPERRE.

DELTA®-MAUERWERKSSPERRE:Bitumen-compatible with a Non-slipSurface structure.

0.4 mm thick, DELTA®-MAUERWERKS-SPERRE bears the general test certificateof the building regulatory authority. Bothfaces feature a non-slip profile to ensureoptimum mortar adhesion. Strips arebitumen-compatible, rot-proof, and UV-stabilised. They remain highly flexibleeven at low temperatures, so that nocracks will occur in the material. Beingrelatively thin, strips will come off the rollquickly and are easy to work with.

The Situation:

Damp Proof Courses are horizontal seal-ing layers inserted in the bed joints offoundation walls. Their purpose is toensure that damp cannot penetrate thefoundation wall from below.

The width of a Damp Proof Courseshould be such that it cannot bebridged by moisture on either side ofthe masonry, which is why we recom-mend that Damp Proof Courses shouldbe at least 10 cm wider than the thick-ness of the wall.

To avoid moisture bridges in the vicinityof the hollow moulding that forms thetransition between the external wall ofthe cellar and the floor slab, hollowmouldings should be as narrow as pos-sible to ensure that the horizontalDamp Proof Course is adequately con-nected to the vertical cellar-wall water-proofing system.

If the strip comes into contact with bitu-minous materials used for water-proofing the vertical cellar wall, thematerial of the strip must be bitumen-proof.

19

DPC for Wooden Post and BeamConstructions and as L-shaped barrier.DELTA®-PROTEKT.

The Situation:

Wooden post and beam constructionsmay be damaged by rising damp.Inserting a horizontal sealing layer pre-vents damp from being conveyed fromthe floor slab to the post and beamconstruction. As the strip bears thewhole weight of the sill directly above,it needs to be particularly robust. In thearea of contact, the surface of the floorslab must be finished so that it is freefrom any unevenness that might dama-ge the Damp Proof Course.

In buildings with cavity walls, inner leaves and floors must be protectedfrom moisture at the foot of the hollowspace. For depending on the type offacing brick used and the quality of themortar joints, moisture may penetratethe outer brick shell and enter thespace between the leaves in the eventof a heavy rainfall. For this reason, L-shaped dampproof strips are generallyinstalled at the foot of brick facings. At the same time, these strips are alsoused for dampproofing window anddoor lintels and window sills, so thatdriving rain is safely kept away.

DELTA®-PROTEKT: Outstanding Stability and TearResistance.

DELTA®-PROTEKT is in conformity withDIN, particularly robust, and highly immu-ne to shear forces. As the sheet is protec-ted by cloth facings on both sides, thestrip is ideal for use in wooden post andbeam constructions.

Being bitumen-compatible, DELTA®-PROTEKT may be used in conjunctionwith any other type of waterproofingsystem. When it is used as an L-barrier,installation begins by marking theheight of the strip with a chalk string. The mark should be no less than 15 cmabove the base. Next, DELTA®-PROTEKT

is glued to the backing wall with DELTA®-THAN adhesive and held in placeby additional mechanical fasteners.DELTA®-MWSP-CLIPs may be used as analternative.

System for Rehabilitating Damp Walls from the Inside.DELTA®-PT.

The Situation:

Damp walls in rooms and/or cellars areimpossible to dry out in many cases, which is why it is often very difficult toturn damp cellars into habitable rooms.

DELTA®-PT:Safety for Dry Wall Surfaces.

The DELTA®-PT dimpled mesh reliablyinsulates walls from the inside, forming awaterproof, robust foundation for gypsumand lime cement mortar as well as forplasterboard, ensuring dry wall surfacesin any cellar for a long time.

With its 8 mm dimples, DELTA®-PT createsan air gap between the damp cellar walland the plaster, with ventilation slits inte-grated at the floor and the ceiling toallow moisture to escape.

Whenever the surface of a damp wall isdensely covered with salt crystals,DELTA®-PT may be installed without ven-tilation slits to act as a vapour barrierwhich stops the absorption of moisturefrom the air in the room. This preventsmoisture from being transported in largequantities to the space behind the sheetby the powerful hydroscopic action of thesalt.

The DELTA® Solution.

In these applications, the functions ofDELTA® dimpled sheets are comparableto those in foundation-wall protectionand drainage: Dimples of various dimen-sions and configurations ensure that theflow of water from horizontal and verticalseepage layers is safely drained away.Filtration cloth prevents soil particlesfrom being carried into the drainagelayer. Facing the soil, the dimples form

a high-performance vertical drainagelayer across the entire surface, conveyingthe water either to an outlet or to a hori-zontal drain pipe.

for Civil-engineering Applications.

The Situation:

One of the most common methods ofsecuring the sides of an excavation istimber walling. The process involvesinserting planks, square or round tim-bers, precast reinforced-concrete slabs,or trench sheeting between the pilesrammed into the floor of the excavation.Rolled-steel sections, shell-less reinfor-ced-concrete piles, or unreinforced con-crete piles with permanent shells mayserve as vertical elements. Dependingon the depth of the excavation, timberwalls may have to be anchored in thesoil. The most popular variant of timberwalling is the classical 'Berlin' liningtechnique, which involves manuallyremoving the soil between the pilesalong the edge of the excavation, pus-hing planks that have been cut to sizebehind the flanges of the piles, andhammering in wedges to press themfirmly to the soil.

As timber walls made in this way featurea large number of seams, drainage layers must always be equipped with afiltration cloth to keep them from clog-ging up.

DELTA®-TERRAXX:The Solution for “Berlin” Timber Walls.

DELTA®-TERRAXX is an ideal filtration andseepage layer for “Berlin” timber walls.Sheets should be installed so that the filtration cloth faces the timber wall. Theirself-adhesive overlap zones preventcement sludge from entering and clog-ging up the seepage layer when concreteis poured.

Civil-engineering Construction in AreasDELTA®-MS/DELTA®-MS 20.

The Situation:

When a new building is erected in thecentre of a town or city, there is gene-rally not enough room for allowing thesides of the excavation to slope natu-rally. Particularly on sites that are wed-ged in between two existing buildings, where every inch counts, excavationsides are normally shored up to keepthe soil from subsiding. The walls thatare used in these applications must bequick and economical to build, largelywaterproof, and robust as well as safe,to avoid any danger to the neighbou-ring buildings.

Many cleading varieties absolutely callfor high-performance drainage, for theseepage water traversing the liningunder pressure will later affect thewaterproofing of the building itself andmay even give rise to static problemsunder unfavourable conditions.

Curtain walls are made by pouring con-crete into a trench 0.4 to 0.8 m in widththat may be as deep as 40 meters.Specially-designed excavating tools areused for digging these trenches. Untilthey are filled with concrete, the earthwalls encasing these trenches are keptfrom crumbling by a so-called suppor-ting slurry consisting of bentonite andwater. Like every other concrete wallthat is cast on site, curtain walls maybe penetrated by seepage water in thevicinity of beams or small cracks.

The Duisburg underground:DELTA®-MS 20 sheets installed between a rein-forced curtain wall and the waterproof innershell of the tunnel. This configuration permitsstructures to move without any unacceptablefriction occurring between the curtain and thein-situ concrete wall.

DELTA®-MS/DELTA®-MS 20:The Solution for Subterranean CurtainWalls or Shotcrete Linings.

DELTA®-MS and DELTA®-MS 20 may beinstalled as permanent shuttering eitherhorizontally or vertically between a shot-crete wall and/or curtain wall and theconcrete wall of the building. In this case, the shotcrete acts as a filter, keeping theseepage layer free from soil particles.

Exposed to Underground Water.

Underground garage of a Frankfurt hotel:Water emerging from the rocky subsoil is drained away by a DELTA®-MS seepage layer.

Installed between the floor slab and the roadsurface, DELTA®-MS 20 catches any influx ofwater caused by rising groundwater levels, conveying it towards the drain pipe.

European Building, Brussels:The entire underground garage was put at riskby fluctuations in the groundwater level.

This approach permits controlled draina-ge of any water influx during the con-struction phase, so that it does not inter-fere with the setting process of water-impermeable and other concrete. Oncethe structure has been completed, anywater influx will be drained away underno pressure, or else the groundwatertables will be raised to one and the samelevel all around the structure so as toensure that all pressure-boundary water-proofing systems are exposed to thesame hydrostatic pressure. Given a gra-dient of i=1, the drainage capacity ofDELTA®-MS and DELTA®-MS 20 is 2.25and 10 l/s . m, respectively.

Systems for Underground Tunnel ConstDELTA®-MS/DELTA®-MS 20.

The Situation:

Efficient drainage is of paramountimportance while a tunnel is actuallybeing built as well as after its completi-on. Depending on the ground andwater configuration, the upper arch aswell as the floor of the tunnel may beimpacted by artesian, fissure, and – ifthe tunnel is covered by a thin layer ofsoil – seepage water. In the long run, both the durability and the usability ofa tunnel largely depends on the extentto which its inner shell and floor havebeen reliably protected against theincursion of water and any subsequentfrost damage. This being so, it is advi-sable to catch any artesian and surfacewater between the inner and the outershell of the tunnel both along the archand the floor of the tunnel in suitabledrainage and seepage layers, and todrain it away under controlled conditi-ons. This holds particularly true for anytunnels made by rationalised methodsusing waterproof concrete, which mayneither come into contact with seepagewater nor be exposed to hydrostaticpressure while it is setting.

DELTA®-MS:A Continuous and Safe System ofChannels.

DELTA®-MS is a rational and reliable solu-tion for coping with the influx of water intunnel projects of any kind. Installed withits dimples facing outward, i.e. towardseither the rock substrate or a shotcretelayer applied for stabilisation and filtrationpurposes, the air gap between the dimples will form a continuous system of channels.

This air gap will convey any water comingfrom the ground towards the drainagesystem without impeding its flow. Theinner waterproofing layer of the system, which may be attached directly to thedimpled sheet by any of a number ofmethods, is never impacted by waterpressure. DELTA®-MS may serve as per-manent shuttering in structures made ofwaterproof concrete, keeping away anyseepage water while the material sets.

26 DELTA®-MS: the dependable solution for coping with water in tunnel projects of all kinds.

ruction.

DELTA®-MS 20:A High Air Gap for Ample ReserveCapacity.

The drainage capacity of DELTA®-MS 20is many times higher than that of DELTA®-MS, providing even more safety. Thanksto its thickness of 20 mm, the air gapoffers high capacity reserves to cope withany cross-section reductions that may becaused by seepage in the course of time.

27 Thanks to its enormous drainage capacity, DELTA®-MS 20 offers outstanding safety.

Systems for Open TunnelConstruction.DELTA®-TERRAXX.

The Situation:

Tunnel end sections or portals builtabove ground are exposed to waterloading. As the backfill materials avai-lable on site frequently do not allowmuch seepage, drainage systemsbecome indispensable.

DELTA®-TERRAXX:Powerful Protection against HeadwaterPressure.

With its high compressive strength, theDELTA®-TERRAXX protection and drainagesystem guarantees effective eliminationof any headwater pressure, even at activesoil pressures of up to 90 kN/m2.

28 DELTA®-TERRAXX provides reliable protection from headwater pressure.

29

The Situation:

Many older tunnels leak and since theyhave been inadequately waterproofedin the first place, structures do not onlygrow wet but may even lose their load-bearing capacity as the mortar in themasonry joints leaches out. Especiallyin railway tunnels, it is often impossibleto close the tunnel to traffic entirely forrehabilitation. The only alternative is todismantle such tunnels track by trackand rebuild them with shotcrete. How-ever, this approach offers no opportu-nity of waterproofing the entire surfaceof the arch.

DELTA®-PT:Safe Drainage of Fissure and ArtesianWater.

In many cases, retrofitting tunnels with adrainage system is the only way of effec-tively eliminating water damage. By liningthe inside arch with DELTA®-PT, a dimpledsheet with a laminated-on plaster mesh,an air gap facing the tunnel wall is createdthrough which fissure and artesian waterdrains away safely. The fused-on plasticmesh provides optimum adhesion for theshotcrete applied during the installationphase.

Performance Characteristics of DELTA® Dim

 36

Every Effect Has its Specific Cause.

As in all modern drainage systems, thedrainage capacity of DELTA® dimpledsheets is influenced by compressiveloads. When exposed to pressure, alldrainage materials will be compressed toa greater or lesser extent. Pressure loadsthat are of relevance in the practicalapplication of dimpled sheets may be eit-her transient (caused e.g. by shuttering)or permanent (e.g. soil pressure).

Example:When exposed to a pressure of 250 kN/m2,DELTA®-GEO-DRAIN Quattro will be crus-hed by 12 %.

Impact of Freshly-poured Concrete(Transient Loading). The pressure exerted by freshly pouredconcrete largely depends on the consi-stency of the material and the rate atwhich it rises as it is poured. Pressurefrom freshly-poured concrete disappearsas soon as the material has set.

Example:Concrete belonging to the F2 consisten-cy class that is poured at a rate of 5 m/hwill exert pressure amounting to about 60 kN/m2 on the shuttering. Under theseconditions, the water-drainage capacityof DELTA®-DRAIN will be about 1.6 l/s · m.
