Distance education is defined as education that takes place when

the instructor and student are separated by space and time. The gap

between the two can be bridged through the use of technology - such as

audio tapes, videoconferencing, satellite broadcasts and online

technology - and/or more traditional delivery methods, such as the postal

service.

Distance Learning is defined as a process of transferring knowledge to

learners(students) who are separated from the instructor(teacher) by time

and/or physical distance and are making use of technology components,

such as the Internet, video, CD's, tapes, and other forms of technology to

accomplish learning.

In our modest opinion, we think that distance learning is an informal process, and distance education is a formal process. Learning is knowledge gained through experience, and education is knowledge gained through teaching. Education is something that an individual gets from an outside source. On the other hand, learning is something that evolves in the inner self. So we prefer to use Distance Education term.

correspondence courses in Europe. This was the accepted norm until the middle of this

century, when instructional radio and television became popular and then followed by a variety of more advance technology.
