iPads ARE HERE!
W ELCOME BACK!!!! This
is an exciting year for
educational technology in
District 163. Thanks to
the Enhancing Education Through Technology
(EETT) grant and donations from the District
Golf Outing, we were able to purchase iPads
to use in the classroom for instruction District
wide. iPads were deployed to teachers at the
end of the 2011-2012 school year, which
provided teachers the opportunity to get to
know and work with their iPads over the
summer.
During the summer S.M.A.R.T program, the
iPads were used at Forest Trail with middle
school students. As a culminating project each
group studied a different country and created
a newscast with current events, weather and
entertainment segments. Feedback from staff
has been positive. Karen Burns, summer
school principal, had this to say about the
project. “Once the students realized that they
would be able to use the iPads to complete
their final project, I had total buy-in. The
students were excited to learn how to work
with the iPads themselves, but they were also
excited to do all of the pre-production work
that is required to create a video. All of the
students participated in some way, whether it
be writing scripts, creating cue cards,
building a set, filming, or being the on air
talent and they loved it. I will be planning and
implementing a project similar to the news
cast with my students this school year for
sure.”
We will be offering professional
development workshops once a month. The
next iMovie class will be held on November
29th. See page 4 for more information.

Tech Talk Issue 1 November 2012
COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU! IMOVIE iMovie is an App that has been installed on all student iPads in the District. Using video production in
the classroom promotes higher level thinking. According to the new Bloom’s Taxonomy, creating is at
the highest level of thinking. Video production asks students to analyze and synthesize information
from multiple sources, decide how to illustrate that information, and make decisions about the audience
and how the information will be presented.
Possible uses for video production in the
classroom:
UPCOMING IPAD WORKSHOPS
IMOVIE T IPS AND TRICKS
1. Have students plan their video production before they shoot the video. Good production planning includes a script, a video treatment (a one paragraph summary of what the movie will be about) and a script or storyboard that outlines shot by shot what scenes will need to be shot. A good online resource is http://kidsvid.4teachers.org
2. Shoot your video in landscape mode to make sure that your video will take up the full screen.
3. To edit music in iMovie, turn the looping off. This will allow you to adjust the audio right where you want it.
4
Digital Storytelling or Retelling
Newscasts
Book Chats
Presentation of Project Information
Commercials and Trailers to sell
an idea or point of view.
How-to videos to teach a skill or
concept.
Many, many others.
1. If you want to edit more than one video, make sure you shoot it on one iPad.
2. When your iMovie is complete, save it to the Camera Roll.
3. To get movies off of the student iPads, use Dropbox or upload the video to a SchoolFusion site.
To learn more about using iMovie in the classroom, register for the Using iMovie workshop. Or check out my Video Production page on SchoolFusion at http://video-production-page.sd163.schoolfusion.us. To get help in the classroom using iMovie, contact Susan Klimczak at [email protected].
