PRODUCT PORTFOLIO BY APPLICATION

In recent years, the automotive industry has been dominated by the search for ever improving fuel
economy. In line with this trend, the specifications for engine oils moved towards lower viscosity base
oils. Oleon offers a wide range of low viscous base oils to meet these future requirements. Oleon’s
low viscous base oils combine fuel economy benefits while offering low Noack volatility and improved
oxidation stability for longer drain intervals.
From their nature esters offer high viscosity indexes and extremely low pour points, enabling them to
operate over very broad temperature ranges. The high lubricity that characterizes our selected Oleon
base oils helps support the high load carrying capacity that is requested from new formulations. Thanks
to the high polarity of the ester linkage, the Oleon base oils offer excellent solubility of additives or
can help increase the solvency power of your formulation when used as a co-base oil. The low viscous
Oleon base oils are compatible with Group I, Group II, Group III and PAO base stocks.

METALWORKING FLUIDS
Oleon has developed a broad range of esters and technical oils to support metal fluid formulators with
versatile requirements. Ester base oils show high lubricity compared to other base stocks. The high lubricity
of ester base stocks makes it possible to formulate metalworking fluids that achieve increased worktool life,
better finish and increased production output. Esters have by nature higher flash points than other base
stocks with similar viscosities.
By further carefully selecting the right ester, very high flash points are achievable to help guarantee safe
operations. In addition most esters are non-toxic, non-bio accumulative and from renewable origin.
When formulating with esters you help to protect both the health of the operators as well as preserving
our environment.

Oleon’s PEG- esters
Due to the rising environmental and safety concerns, the requirements and trends of the
metalworking fluid market are changing. To meet these needs, Oleon offers a range of PEG-esters
as an HSE friendly solution and alternative to the commonly used ethoxylated alcohols. Next to the
safer and more ecofriendly image, the dissolution speed to form a stable emulsion is significantly
higher for the tested PEG esters compared to the ethoxylated alcohols. Additionally most PEG
esters have a lower Critical Micellar Concentration (CMC, see graphs below), meaning that less
emulsifier is needed to form a stable oil in water emulsion.

ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE LUBRICANTS
Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) are gaining more importance due to the changing
awareness and regulations. These Lubricants are especially of interest in environmentally sensitive application areas such as:
The USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines EAL’s as lubricants that fulfill specific requirements:
✔ Biodegradable (ex.: ≤ 70%, OECD 301B)
✔ Minimally toxic (ex.: OECD 201)
✔ Not bio accumulative (ex. OECD 117)
EAL’s are commonly classified according to the type of base oil used in their formulation. Oleon’s natural chemistry enables us to offer a broad range of ester base oils and additives well-adapted
to these criteria and especially suited for formulation of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants and Bio-lubricants (min. 25% renewable content).
Complying to the above requirements however, calls for extensive testing. This comprehensive
testing can (partly) be avoided by using base oils and additives which are compliant with approved
national or international labels, such as EU Ecolabel, German Blue Angel, Swedish Standard,
OSPAR, etc…
To support our customers in formulating against these criteria and to avoid this
substantial testing, Oleon has registered over 40 products on the 2019 Lubricant Substance Classification list (LuSC) for EU Ecolabel formulations.

GEAR OILS
The primary function of a gear unit is to transmit and transform mechanical power. The lubricant is
applied to the moving parts via splash lubrication or injection. The main functions of the lubricant in
the gear unit are:
o Reduction of friction and wear
o Protection against pitting and scuffing
o Absorption and transfer of heat
o Reduction of vibration and noise
o Removal of contaminants
Most gear boxes use a “fill-for-life” formulation or have extensive drain intervals. As a result the thermal-
oxidative stability of the base oil is a key property for these lubricants. To provide our customers with
an appropriate base oil that fulfils all the key parameters needed for formulating a top-tier gear oil,
Oleon developed a top-tier saturated ester range. These esters are characterized by their: high oxidation
stability, low foaming tendency, no corrosion behavior, high FZG, micro pitting mitigation properties
and premium hydrolytic stability, etc. Our new top-tier saturated thickeners have viscosities ranging from
ISO VG 100 to ISO VG 1000 cSt making them ideal base stocks for gear oils.
In gear oil systems, esters are also applied as a co-base oil to optimize the rheology and to boost
the lubricity & solubility performance of the final lubricant. Esters show excellent compatibility with
mineral and PAO base oils for optimal formulation flexibility.

MARINE
A major market shift occurred on December 19th, 2013 in the global marine market. Since that day, all
commercial vessels larger than 79 feet entering the waters of the United States are subjected to the
Vessel General Permit (VGP) regulation as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
This regulation entails the mandatory use of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) in the oil-
sea interface. EAL’s are defined by the EPA as lubricants that are biodegradable, minimally toxic and
non-bio accumulative as also described earlier in the brochure.
Examples of lubricants to be used in the oil-sea interface are:
Controllable pitch propeller and thruster hydraulic fluid
Stern tube oils
Paddle wheel propulsion
Thruster bearings
Apart from these, EPA strongly encourages the use of EAL for all above-deck equipment such as
hydraulic oil, gear oil, 2-strok oils etc…
Specifically for the EPA VGP regulation, Oleon offers a wide range of globally and EU Ecolabel registered
products as well as other eco-friendly base oils going from ISO VG 15 up to ISO VG 1000. Depending
on your requirements, this product range is divided in a standard range and a top-tier range, in which
the difference is mainly linked to the oxidation and hydrolytic stability.
Like the European Ecolabel, the regulations are updated by the EPA every 4-6 years. On December
4th, 2018 the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) was signed into law. This regulation establishes
new responsibilities for the US Coast Guard and provides a framework for the regulation of discharges
incidental to the normal operation of a vessel under a new Clean Water Act. As soon as the new
regulations are finalized and implemented by the EPA and the US Coast guard, (deadline: December
2020) the VIDA will replace the existing 2013 VGP regulation and it will apply to:
Commercial vessels greater than 79 feet
Other non-recreational, non-armed force vessels such as research and emergency rescue vessels
Ballast water only from small vessels (less than 79 feet) and fishing vessels.

To date Oleon remains a market leader for marine VGP formulations with more than 40 Radialube ester base
oils on the updated 2019 Ecolabel LuSC list. Taking into account the chemistry of esters, as well as the raw
materials Oleon uses, at least 80% of the lubricant base oils offered, are eligible for Ecolabel registration.
