Methodologies of Art History and Visual Culture. 3 hours. Examination of methodologies associated with art history and visual culture studies. Taught as a seminar, with emphasis on readings, oral presentations, and written assignments.

This course asks you to read and understand published writing about methods, participate in discussion, and complete related work individually and in one case, collaboratively. It is your responsibility to listen in class and follow instructions regarding readings and assignments. This assignment has two parts. Part one is this. During class you demonstrate how to use a method by using it to discuss a work of art, based on reading assigned for that day. You may want to

1. Explain what is the method or methods in question? 2. Identify and explain what concepts and ideas characterize it? 3. Demonstrate how do you use the method to research art? 4. Identify what questions about art does it help you pose? 5. Explain what are you likely to learn by using it? 6. Suggest what complexities may arise? 7. Suggest are there limits to using the method?

Do not use a PowerPoint other than to show features of a work of art. Do not review or survey all of the readings we completed for a class. Focus on a features of art and show us how to use a method to study them. You will work in small groups, and every member of the group will receive the same grade. The maximum score for this part of the assignment is 7.5 POINTS/ 5 points

GRADUATE STUDENTS ASSIGNMENT – TEACHING A METHOD = 15 POINTS

In addition to presenting in class, also, each graduate student will select a method to teach as part of a series about how art historians work, focusing on what methods are and how art historians use methods. You will teach online, long-distance, with the Virtual Senior Center in New York. Teaching sessions will last approximately 45 minutes and they will be scheduled for late October into November. You must complete initial paperwork—application form and confidentiality agreement--and submit it to the Center in a timely fashion, prepare and practice a lesson, train in an online practice session, make sure your technology for teaching works, and present your lesson online. You are encouraged to select works of art from collections (online) in the New York City area, and share your screen as part of your teaching presentation. You are also encouraged to focus on a method that you are presenting in class and/or using in your research paper. We will partner with the wonderful Carmella Chessen, who runs the program and will guide us in preparing and delivering our content.

RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT – DUE MONDAY DECEMBER 12 = 30 POINTS / 30 POINTS

Students grouped for the Methods Demonstration assignment also will form a group to study one object in the Crow Collection of Asian Art’s exhibition, Clay between Two Seas: From the Abbasid Court to Puebla de los Angeles. However, although each student in your group will study the same object, you will work individually to produce a methodologically-driven paper. A methodologically-driven paper is one that centralizes using a method or inquiring about a method as the core of the research. This means, your research question should involve using a method or inquiring about a method. Individually, you must decide on a methodological approach, apply the method to develop an argument, use the method for research, analyze what you learned, provide evidence that supports your argument, and write the results of your research in a paper of 6 to 8 pages typed, double space, formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style. As soon as you know the object you are studying, begin researching it with the goal in mind of completing the related argument assignment due November 9, and the paper assignment due December 12.

COLLECTIONS CULTURES COLLABORATIONS

Your methodologically-driven paper is part of a nine-year series called “Collections Cultures Collaborations.” This series facilitates undergraduate and graduate-level art history majors studying regional collections firsthand, with the subsequent use of that research in an exhibition or scholarly presentation. This year we are researching objects selected from a current exhibition at the Crow Collection of Asian Art -- Clay between Two Seas: From the Abbasid Court to Puebla de los Angeles. Read about the exhibition here -- http://crowcollection.org/exhibition/clay-between-two-seas-from-the-abbasid-court-to-puebla-de-los-angeles. The exhibition runs from September 17, 2016 to February 12, 2017. The best papers in our course will be selected for public presentation at a special research day the Crow Museum will hold early in spring 2017, before the exhibition closes.

SCREEN POLICY [TECHNOLOGY IN CLASS]: Phones must be turned off unless the professor says otherwise. If your phone rings more than once during class in the classroom, your final course grade will be reduced at the professor’s discretion, you will be asked to leave class and that class will be counted as an absence. No phones are permitted in the area immediately outside the classroom.

Please bring technology to class that helps you take notes and learn. If you are not paying attention or there is a lack of discussion, the professor may ban screens temporarily or permanently. Technology used for purposes other than class learning may be banned or taken at the discretion of the professor.
