Hiiragi, also known as holly olive or false holly, is a type of holly that is native to southern Japan. Originally known under the name “hihiragi”, the plant has been a part of Japanese culture since Japan’s oldest historical records, the Kojiki. The kanji itself is derived from Old Japanese. It was originally a compound of a now obsolete kanji, 疼 (hihira) meaning “to ache”, combined with the kanji for tree, 木 (ki). This combination references the tree’s sharp leaves.
