TEACHING SPEAKING METHOD USED BY ESP LECTURER AT

ECONOMIC SYARIAH DEPARTMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF

MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

ABSTRACT

Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is based on the students’

need. Thus, the lecturer should decide appropriate method to achieve the learning

goal by considering students learning issues. This study is aimed to analyze the

kinds of teaching speaking method, the problems faced by the lecturer, and the

proposed solution of the problems in teaching speaking at Economic Syariah

Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

In this study, the descriptive qualitative design was used to acquire the

data and analyze it as well. The data were obtained through observing the

classroom activity and interviewing the lecturer. In observation, the writer applied

non-participant observation and used observation checklist as the instruments to

collect the data. In addition, interview was used in semi-structured way.

The result of this study indicates that the ESP lecturer implemented two

kinds of teaching method while teaching speaking, such as Direct Method and

Communicative Language teaching (CLT) method. Additionally, there were six

problems and proper solutions found by the ESP lecturer in teaching speaking.

There were (1) inhibition. The lecturer solved it by creating a comfortable

atmosphere in the classroom and making an interesting activity. (2) Nothing to

say. The lecturer overcame it by suggesting the students to read a lot of English

text and opened the dictionary when they found the difficult words. (3) Mother

tongue use. Settling this problem, the lecturer suggested the students to watch and

listen a lot of things related in English. It could be from the music lyric or video.

(4) Uneven participation. The lecturer cope this problem by giving attention and

pointing out another student to answer the question related to the topic. (5)

Incorrect pronunciation. Resolving this problem, the lecturer made a word games

which include learning to pronounce the words correctly and suggested the

students to listen a lot of things related to English to train them improve the

pronunciation. (6) Uncontrolled students. Dealing with this problem, the lecturer

had three ways, (1) moving around the class to control the students, (2) reminding

the students to pay attention and respect other, and (3) dividing the students into

groups then, gave them a topic to be discussed.
