Cheating Lessons: Learning From Academic Dishonesty

Dr. JAMES M. LANG

Nearly three-quarters of college students cheat during their

undergraduate careers, a startling number attributed variously to the

laziness of today’s students, their lack of a moral compass, or the

demands of a hypercompetitive society. For James Lang, cultural

or sociological explanations like these are red herrings. His

provocative new research indicates that students often cheat because

their learning environments give them ample incentives to try—and

that strategies which make cheating less worthwhile also improve

student learning. Cheating Lessons is a practical guide to tackling

academic dishonesty at its roots.

Drawing on an array of findings from cognitive theory, Lang analyzes

the specific, often hidden features of course design and daily

classroom practice that create opportunities for cheating. Courses

that set the stakes of performance very high, that rely on single

assessment mechanisms like multiple-choice tests, that have

arbitrary grading criteria: these are the kinds of conditions that breed

cheating. Lang seeks to empower teachers to create more effective

learning environments that foster intrinsic motivation, promote

mastery, and instill the sense of self-efficacy that students need for

deep learning.

James M. Lang is an Associate Professor of English and the Director

of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College in

Worcester, MA. He is the author of four books, the most recent of

which are Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty

(Harvard University Press, 2013), and On Course: A Week-by-Week

Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching (Harvard UP,

2008). A starred review in Library Journal describes Cheating

Lessons as a “lively book” that “explains relevant cognitive theory,

outlines factors that foster cheating, and presents fascinating

examples of course structures and classroom activities that stimulate

students to work toward mastering their subjects.” Lang writes a

monthly column on teaching and learning for The Chronicle of

Higher Education; his work has been appearing in The Chronicle

since 1999. His book reviews and public scholarship on higher

education have appeared in a wide variety of newspapers and

magazines, including the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Time, and

America. He is a member of the Fulbright Senior Specialist roster in

higher education. He has a B.A. in English and Philosophy from the

University of Notre Dame, an M.A. in English from St. Louis

University, and a Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University.

2014 Certificate of Reflective Teaching

The Certificate of Reflective Teaching provides instructors the opportunity to learn pedagogical skills and information about teaching not necessarily gained during formal training in graduate school. Instructors gain recognition for their efforts to become more intentional, reflective teachers who incorporate best practices in teaching. Faculty members also benefit from the opportunity to foster relationships with other faculty members outside of their home departments who are dedicated to improving their teaching.

Thank a Teacher

The NC State Thank a Teacher program was created in Fall 2010 to give students the opportunity to thank NC State instructors who have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact on their students’ lives. The program continues to grow. In 2013, the Office of Faculty Development received over 700 submissions from students.

Office of Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) was established as part of

the Office of the Provost in August 2008. OFD assumed important

functions of the former Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning

and offers programs addressing teaching and learning and other

areas of faculty work, alone or in conjunction with other NC State

offices.

The Office aims to connect faculty members to vital information and

resources while providing the knowledge and skills needed to grow,

excel, and succeed in all realms of faculty responsibility. We strive to

provide resources for all faculty members on campus, regardless of

their discipline or tenure status.

OFD offers a wide variety of programming, including workshops on

topics pertinent to faculty success. Additionally, OFD offers reading

circles, small groups that provide colleagues the opportunity to share

ideas about teaching and learning in an informal setting with peers

from across the university. For participants looking for a more

intensive experience, OFD offers the Certificate of Reflective

Teaching Program, the Peer Coaching Program, the Assistant

Professors Community, and Community Engaged Faculty Fellows.

OFD also facilitates several faculty recognition programs, including

the Thank a Teacher Program and the University Teaching Awards.

Each year, OFD sponsors a Summer Institute, New Faculty

Orientation, and the Teaching and Learning Symposium.
