~The Eight Standards for Mathematical Practices with Ryan Seidel~

Below is a problem that highlights this week’s mathematical practice. The difficulty and grade lev-els will vary from week to week, but try it out. If you (or a team) would like to enter a contest send a solution via email to [email protected] that explains your approach. Use any me-dium, video/audio/drawing/scanned work, you feel is appropriate. One entry each week will be randomly chosen to receive a mathematically inclined prize!

I guess last week’s problem was a bit too tough to tackle. We didn’t have any submissions.

Try this one instead. I have a stack of prizes that I need to get off my desk! Week Four~Model with Mathematics

Modeling with mathematics is the process by which students take a complicated situation and sim-plify it in order to reason about it logically. Students should be able to identify the important quantities in the problem and use tools such as tables, equations and graphs to analyze the relation-ships between them. Student can then interpret the results of their work in the context of the problem. This leads to a process of revision and improvement of their model.

Week One~Make Sense of Problems & Persevere in Solving Them Week Two~Reason Abstractly & Quantitatively

Week Three~Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

Week Five~Use Appropriate Tools Strategically Week Six~Attend to Precision Week Seven~Look for and Make Use of Structure Week Eight~Look for and Express Regularity in Reasoning

A local store recently released three coupons to be used on office supplies. If you know me, I’m a sucker for deal. Here they are: 1) Buy 2 get one free 2) Buy 2 and get 50% off the second item 3) $5.00 off your purchase of $10.00 or more Of these coupons, which is the best deal, per item?

2015 Spokane Regional ESL Conference~Inspiring Teachers Keynote Speaker Jo McEntire, author of Making Connections

Saturday, February 28, 2015 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute~Spokane, WA

In order to become proficient and efficient language learners, students need to be able to connect reading to thinking to writing and to speaking. This requires intentional identification, practice and mastery of specific academic skills and strategies. Within this scope of learning lie more connections; connections between identifying and learning vocabulary items, understanding the text and using new vocabulary in writing, for example. And circling every student’s experience within the classroom is another essential connection: the connection between student and teacher. This talk will focus on how we help students make connec-tions both within and beyond English Language Learning, and how we forge connections between student and teacher in order to encourage and sustain this learning. Not JUST for ESL Teachers!

*If you are interested in attending this conference, EVSD is interested in supporting your attendance! * http://spokaneesl.com/ Please contact Mary Hernandez at [email protected] or 241-5024 for more information or to get regis-tered. Registration Fee is only $30 until February 25th and includes lunch, light breakfast snacks, and coffee/tea throughout the day. 6 clock hours available for $12 through NEWESD101

Eligible for 6 of your 12 PD Per Diem Hours when you provide a copy of your registration confirmation and clock hour form to verify your attendance!

EVSD Assessment News We are wrapping up the Winter assessment window for our district assessments. All scores are being loaded into OASIS, and teachers can begin using that data to plan for instruction as well as making decisions regarding interventions. The Assessment Team from each building worked together on January 26th to create SBAC testing schedules for each building. The building reps will be sharing those with each staff so that adjustments can be made if necessary. The testing window for 2015 begins on March 10th for grades 3-8. The 10th grade ELA Exit Exam window will also begin on March 10th. The 11th grade testing window opens on April 6th. We will complete our proctor training for building teams and administrators on February 25th. Thank you to Cari Roderick for working with our iPad teams at each building. We have been promised by OSPI that the app will be available soon.

Assessment Awareness Please be aware that the Washington English Proficiency Assessment (WELPA) will be adminis-tered within the window of February 2-March 13th. The WELPA is a test that is used to see if students need support through the district’s English lan-guage development (ELD) program. This assessment tests reading, writing, listening, and speaking knowledge and skills in English. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 take this test once a year to measure how much growth they have made in learning English at school. Since knowing and using English well is necessary for success in school, it is important that students who need additional help learning English get the help they need. Laurie Wittrock and Jerry Call will notify teachers and administrators of the assessment times for specific students. Please assist them in completing this assessment requirement.

What’s New in EVSD? Emergency Procedures Flip Charts!

When our new School Resource Officer (SRO) Tyler Smith first came to East Valley this school year, he went to all of our schools to see what their Emergency Plans were; what Officer Smith found was a lack of consistency in our plans across the district. After much discussion with East Valley principals and discussions with other districts SRO’s, Offi-cer Smith decided to borrow the flipchart idea from one of his colleagues. Officer Smith then modified the flipcharts to meet the needs of the schools in our district. In order to bring much needed consistency for all of our schools and with permission from In-terim Superintendent Tom Gresch, Officer Smith moved forward to implement the flip charts into all schools. There is now a flip chart in every classroom in the school district. These flip charts will help teachers, paras, student-teachers, substitutes, staff, and students in knowing what the school’s emergency plans are. Officer Smith has requested that the flip charts be next to the door, in view, so that anyone can see them in a time of need. Officer Smith has given a presentation at every school on Lockdowns and Critical Incidents. The flip charts are to be used as a “guideline” and to help with mental preparedness in the case of an emergency, which was explained during the presentations. Officer Smith would like to thank Interim Superintendent Gresch and all of the principals and their designees for helping with this project. Officer Smith also had this to say, “I take ownership and pride in being the School Resource Deputy (SRD) for the district and want to keep moving forward in making our district as safe as possible”. Officer Smith would also like to thank and recognize Kim Hunley (print shop operator) for her help with this project, “Kim is a huge asset to the district. Her work in helping with the flipchart and producing them in such a timely manner should not go unnoticed or unrecognized”. Thank you Officer Smith for your work in our district. Kudos to Kim Hunley for her work on this project as well!

This is hybrid course of ER (Emergency Room) meets CSI (Criminal Science Investigations). The first half of this course focuses on an introduction to medicine, surgery, and the initial diagnosis of disease. The second half introduces the stu-dents to crime scene investigations including suspect identifications through inquiry and DNA mapping.
