Itwouldpop,right?Yeah .IfIletgoofit,willitmakeasound?[Lets air out of balloon.]Yeah,itmakesasound .Whydoesitgoflub-a-dub-dub-dub-dub-dub?

[Student]Becauseit’slettingoutair .

It’slettingoutair .Whydoesn’titjustgostraightthroughandhavethetubeopenthewholetime?Thehole’stoosmall?Well,dothis[opens mouth wide]:Ahhhhhhh .Air’scomingthroughyourthroat,andthere’sflappythingsinsidetherethatvibratewhentheairgoesby .Wheneverairgoesbysomething,ittriestomakeitvibrate,andofcoursethetip[of the balloon]doesvibrate .

We’regoingtotrytomakesomeballoonykindsofthingsthatvibrate,kindoflikeyourthroatworks .AndIthinkitwastheScottishwhousedtheminwartime,too .Theycalledthembagpipes .

Theseballoonsarejustthinrubber .Yourthroathasthickerthingsinit,looksmorelikeropeythings .We’llmakethosevibratelater,butfirstweneedacrazystory .

Blow up a balloon, then let the air out noisily.

Story: “Jack and Jill and Bluebeard's Ghost”Hmm,shouldthestorybeinouterspace,ontheearth,orunderthewa-ter?Underthewater?Okay .

Whatcoloriswater?Blue .There’sbluewater .Andlet’ssupposethatwehaveanunderwatercreature,likeoneofthesethings .There’sanunderwaterelephant .Anddidyouknowelephantscanbreatheunderwater?Howdotheydoit?Yeah,theycanpicktheirtrunkupandbreathethroughtheirtrunk .Sotheycanswimunderwaterandsneakaround,sothey’relikeasubmarinewithasnorkeldevicesotheycangounderwa-ter .

Soourelephantisswimmingaroundunderthere .Ifhe’sswimming,ofcourse,heneedsswimfinssohecanswimfast .Andourelephantisbe-ingriddenunderwaterbyJackandJill .They’reinallthestories .Let’sputJilloverhere .

AndJackandJillaresearchingfortreasurebeneaththeocean .Whereareyougoingtofindtreasureundertheocean?

Now,Bluebeardwasapirate .Hewentalongtheboundingmain,andhefiredhiscannonsatothershipsandstoleoftheirgoldandputitinhisship .He’dstolensomuchgoldthathisshipsunk,anditwaspiledwithgoldcoins .Andthere’sgoldleakingoutthroughthecannonholes,goldinthesand .Therewasgoldeverywhere .

Andtherewasabluebeardghostthatlivedontheship .Andhewearsapatchoveroneeye .Andheguardshisgold .Anybodythatcomesbyhisgold,hetriestoscarethemaway .

AndonedayEvilMisterFredwasfloatingaroundonaraftandhefoundamap,andhewaslookingforaplacewherethegoldwastobefound .Here’shiscastle,andit’sfloatingonaraft .Andhehashisminionspad-dlinghisraftacrosstheocean .Andhewantstogetallofthatgoldand

SoEvilMisterFredcalledtheAcmeStoreofEverythingandorderedaghostmachinegun .Andhegothimselfascubadivingsuit .Andhesaid,“I’mgoingtoswimdownthereandseewhatthisisallabout .”SonowEvilMisterFredisswimmingunderthewater .Whatshouldyouwearifyou’regoingtoswimunderwater?

Airtank .That’sagoodidea .Sohe’sgotascubatankonhisback,andhe’sgotamaskoverhiseyes,andhe’sblowingbubbles .SonowEvilMisterFredcanswimdownthere .HeswamdowntoBluebeard’sghost,helookedhimrightintheeye--becausehe’sonlygotoneeye--andhesays,“Youcan’tscareme .You’rejustaghost,andI’mreal .”Andtheghostsaid,“Oh,yeah?Raaarrghhh!!”AndEvilMisterFredwent,“Ah-hhhhh!”andranaway .Hecompletelyforgotthathehadaghost-killingguninhishand .Hewassoafraidhedidn’tknowwhattodo .

Well,JackandJillweredownthereontheirelephant,andtheyheardthisloudroarunderwater .Andtheysaid,“Whatwasthat?We’dbettergosee .”Andtheywereontheirwaytogosee,andtheycameacrossablueoctopus .Andtheoctopussaid,“Whereareyougoing?”AndJackandJillsaid,“We’regoingtogoseewhatthatloudnoisewas .”Andtheoctopussaid,“Oh,canIgowithyou?”JackandJillsaid,“Why?”Andtheoctopussaid,“BecauseI’mahollowoctopus .Ihavenogutsinsideme .I’mjustaskin .Andmaybeifyougothere,Icanfindmygutsandputthembackinside .”

Experiment: “Build a Glove-o-Phone”Ithinkweshouldworkwithsomeballoonstoday .Ijusthappentohaveabagofballoons .[Holds up a rubber glove.]There’saballoon .Firstjobistotrytoblowupyourballoon .[Blows into the glove and inflates it.]It’saroosterballoon .Seeifyoucanblowuptheballoonandmakeitflyordosomethinglikethat .Isanybodyallergictolatexrubber?

[Passes out gloves.]Testyourballoon,makesureitholdsair .Notaseasyasitlooks,tryingtoblowupaglove,isit?Firstbreathisn’ttoobad,butafterthatyou’rekindofstuck .Ifyougetreallydizzy,yougetextrapoints .

Andtrytomakeasqueakysound[releases air while stretching opening of glove].We’regoingtocutoffthetipofoneofthefingersofthebal-loon .We’regoingtocutjustthetipoffofonefinger .Doesn’tmatter,anyfingeryoulike .Takeafingerandcutjustthetipoff .

Afteryoucutthetipoff,we’regoingtostickastrawinit .Andthenwe’lltapethestrawon .We’regoingtostickthestrawinalittlewaysandputsometapeonit .[Wraps electrical tape around straw, attaching it to glove.]

Whenyougetthestrawandsometape,younowhaveagloveonastraw .Canyoumakenoisewithagloveonastraw?[Blows into straw.]Whatifyouholdtheotherend?[Holds glove opening closed, then blows into straw and inflates glove.]Trythat .Andyouwanttomakeitsothatwhenyoublowonit,thestrawdoesn’tfalloff .

JenwillpassouttapeandI’llpassoutstraws .[To assistant]Givethemabouthalfafootoftape .Pickastraw,anystraw[passes out straws] .Tapeitonandseeifitwillstaythere .Wrapitaroundtight .Itneedstobeatightfit .

We’releavingthefloppyend[of the glove]floppy,justsowecanuseitforsomething .

Now,wehavetubes,colorfultubes,andwe’regoingtoputtheendofyourgloveonthecolorfultube .[Stretches opening of glove over end of tube.]Thenwe’llgiveyouanotherpieceoftape,bigger .Whatdoyouthinkwe’regoingtodowiththat?

Thistimeyou’regoingtoneedabigpieceoftape,aboutafoot .Andyou’regoingtotapetheglovetightlyontothetube .Ifyoustretchthetapeasyougoaroundit,itusuallyworksbetter,butyoucandoitanywayyoulike .Youwantittobeairtightwhenyou’redone .Okay,now

Blow up a latex glove to test it.

Tape the straw onto the cut finger-tip with electrical tape.

Stretch the opening to make a squeaky sound

Hold the bottom closed and blow into the straw to test it.

Well,youhavetofigurethatoutyourself .

[Passes out tubes and tape. Students assemble them and try to make sounds.]

Wanttotryalongerone?[Gives students a second tube to add to the first one, making a longer tube.]

[Passes out permanent markers.]Youcanmakeitsoyoucantellwhichoneisyoursandwhichoneisnotyours .

Place end of tube against table and blow into straw to check for an airtight seal around the Tube.

Stretch the opening of the glove over the end of the yube

and secure with electrical tape.

To make the glove-o-phone work, turn the tube so that the closed end is pointing away from you and the glove is stretched taut

over the opening.
