National French Fries Day Andean Incas were the first to discover the potato. The potato was growing wild at the

time in the highlands. It’s believed the cultivation of the potato has occurred since about 750 BC. The potato was used as food as well as for helping to tell time and treating injuries and diseases. In 1588, the potato arrived in Germany. At this time, the potato was only served to prisoners and livestock. In 1744, in an attempt to save people from famine, King William ordered peasants to plant the potato. A failed potato crop in Ireland in the 1700’s resulted in famine and the loss of one fifth of the population. Today, the potato is considered a staple food item and is served in many forms, including mashed, baked, and French fries!

National Baked Bean Month July is National Baked Bean Month. New England Native Americans

depended on the bean for nutrition. Their staple food was then shared with colonists. Native Americans would dig holes in the earth, lining each with stone. Beans placed in deer hide were then slowly cooked in the pits. Beans were often flavored with maple sugar and bear fat. Over the passage of time, this preparation evolved into what we know as baked beans. Salt pork and molasses was eventually added to the beans, which led to the new name of Boston Baked Beans.

the bell was hung. The Liberty Bell’s chime is often associated with the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776 by Colonel John Nixon. The Liberty Bell’s ring from the tower of Independence Hall on this day was to summon citizens to come out to hear this reading. Much debate exists as to the date the Liberty Bell cracked, yet it is recorded that it cracked while ringing at John Marshall’s funeral on July 8, 1835. The crack, which grew larger on Washington’s birthday in 1846, ended the bell’s ability to ring.

Approaching her 40 th birthday, Earhart wanted a new challenge…to fly around the world! After the last radio communication from Earhart a rescue attempt began immediately. This air and sea search remains the most extensive to date. The United States governmental rescue mission was reluctantly called off July 19, after covering 250,000 square miles of ocean and spending $4 million dollars. A lighthouse dedicated to Amelia Earhart was constructed on Howland Island in 1938.
