1. How the teacher’s beliefs and attitudes impact on teaching outcome

The success or otherwise of a lesson is determined before a teacher enters the classroom. By far the biggest determining factor comes from the beliefs and attitudes the teacher holds. This has to be the main focus of concern and thoughtful preparation for any teacher that desires to be successful and to continually improve.

2. The classroom climate

Research has shown (Rosenthal and Jacobsen, 1968) that the single greatest influence on learners is the classroom climate.

4. The importance of congruency

Congruency is about there being consistency and agreement in the messages we deliver as teachers. And we need to be aware that most of these messages will be both transmitted by us and received by the students at a subconscious level.

5. Sub-conscious learning(and the placebo effect)

Accepting that there is a vast amount more subconscious learning taking place than conscious learning what can we try to consciously do to impact on this?

6. Positive suggestion(and authority)

Research by Lozanov made clear that suggestion in many forms is always operating. Suggestion is operating at both the conscious and subconscious level.

9. Coercive authority V stimulating inner motivation

Teachers today don't have the luxury of gaining immediate respect by virtue of don ning a uniform. Your credibility will rather be determined by your ability to “win over" your learners' respect.
