PRINCIPLESNew Zealand Curriculum PRINCIPLES

NPSDA School PRINCIPLES

High expectations

Treaty of Waitangi

Cultural diversity

Learning to learn

Community engagement

Coherence

Future focus The curriculum encourages students to look to the future by exploring such significant future-focused issues as sustainability, citizenship, enterprise, and globalisation.

(Where are these in our school today?)

"GOOD BETTER BEST..." This also needs to be focussed on and made more visual in all our curriculum planning! Evidence of this in planning should then become a part of Teacher appraisal.

Make this visual! WE need to develop this, place Te Reo around the room, more awareness needed around our school, more Tikanga action songs, Titi torea games, Marae visit necessary - consent required first.

Social studies, cultural day, Certificates, homework books, assessment,

rewards, pre/post formative assessment.

Self assessments, workbooks, goal setting, presentation

PE, Road Safety, excursions, homework, general knowledge.

This needs more focus at our school. We currently have this in: NIE (Newspapers in Education) / Current Events / News updates in discussions Elections. We need more Current Events and General Knowledge built into our curriculum. Project work for our seniors would also need to be a focus for our new curriculum.

Coherence is built implicitly into a curriculum that is thematic based. In other words where all learning areas (as much as possible) are integrated around a common theme. For example: TOPIC: Insects. Literacy writing: Report writing on a chosen insect / Maths: Counting insects in a given area and creating a graph of daily observations. At present this can work into the senior room but is proving more difficult in the junior room unless future time slots are arranged for release.

KEY COMPETENCIES

New Zealand Curriculum KEY COMPETENCIES

NPSDA School Key Competencies (Where are these in our school today?)

Thinking Using language, symbols, and texts Managing self Relating to others Participating and contributing.

Thinking is used at our school however will also need to be a continued area of future development. Areas to include in our planning would be: -DE Bonos thinking hats. -Thinking Keys -Multiple Intelligences. This would ensure that the Key Competencies are Encouraged at our school.

Show and Tell, Reading programme. This would also need more encouraging and a time slot in the daily programme to be dedicated to reading of various signs around the world our children live in. Beach signs, road signs, bike signs etc.

We encourage this at our school through: -having children look after their own hats, shoes, uniform, pens, book bags, homework books. -Also through various signs around the school. Boys and girls toilets have signs which ask our children if they are tidy and clean. This would also need to become a continuing focus for our teachers to encourage students to do.

We encourage Relating to others in our virtues programme and our Bible Programme. We have in the past used Peer Mediation for the senior school. This could be something we re-focus on for the future.

We encourage participating and contributing through Sports and PE. We encourage students to remember that People are more important than winning. This will also however need to be an ongoing focus for our students.
