What is Teach For Malaysia?

Teach For Malaysia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that is enlisting Malaysia’s most outstanding youth in our mission to end education inequity.

Teach For Malaysia Fellows will serve as full-time teachers for two years in high-need schools, and commit to transform the education outcomes of less-privileged schoolchildren through significantly improving their achievements and aspirations.

In the long term, Teach For Malaysia Ambassadors would form a different class of leaders, working together with various sectors, to expand education opportunity for all children in Malaysia.

Teach For Malaysia is a partner of Teach For All, a global network of independent organisations working to expand educational opportunity in their countries through enlisting their nations’ most promising future leaders in the effort.

TheFellowship

The Teach For Malaysia two-year Fellowship will likely be a Fellow’s most challenging and rewarding experience in his or her life! In these two years, Fellows will be expected to confront and tackle a host of challenges, motivate diverse stakeholders to work hard towards a shared vision, create and adjust plans to move further towards their goals and gain the confidence they need to succeed.

The intensive two-year Fellowship will equip Fellows with the leadership skills necessary to become a transformational teacher and leader, in order to successfully break the link between a child’s origin and his or her education, and therefore life outcomes. Largely, Fellows have two major roles during their Fellowship:

Leadership in the classroomFellows are expected to lead students in their classrooms towards academic achievement that defies traditional expectations. Fellows foster this achievement by getting to know their students in and out of the classroom, creating instructional plans to match the individual student’s needs, delivering instruction in an engaging manner, working with other teachers, administrators and community members to build skills and obtain resources for the classroom and administering and analysing assessments to ensure that students are progressing towards their academic goals.

Leadership in the communityIn addition to teaching, Fellows are expected to implement a transformational project in the school or students’ community. Fellows choose to tackle one primary challenge to students’ achievement (after discussions with school communities and leaders) and create innovative and sustainable solutions to this problem. To carry out this project effectively, Fellows, with the guidance of a business coach, research and plan the project, amass resources necessary to implement the project, invest students,

families, teachers, administrators and/or community members to help implement the project and troubleshoot the project in its execution phase.

By designing, implementing and managing a small-scale, sustainable project within the school community, Fellows build upon their leadership and project management skills. These leadership and management skills are transferable and Fellows can utilise the lessons learned through this project in other work they do after the duration of the Fellowship. Through this project, Fellows also develop a deep understanding of the many barriers to achievement and the complex problems associated with achieving equity in education. This experience shapes and guides the methods through which Fellows tackle educational inequity in the country, both in the short term and long term.

Beyondthe Fellowship

It is Teach For Malaysia’s deep belief that for all children in Malaysia to receive an excellent education, we will need a movement of leaders, across various sectors, who are invested in achieving this vision.

Through their Fellowship experience, Teach For Malaysia Ambassadors would be equipped with a grounded sense of reality of our nation’s core educational challenges, a firsthand knowledge of how to address these challenges and most importantly a strong conviction and sense of possibility that all children in Malaysia can achieve at high levels when given the opportunities they deserve.

Teach For Malaysia is establishing partnerships with local and international organisations in Malaysia who are on board with our mission for social change. We help these organisations understand the valuable and transferable skills that our Fellows develop during the programme, which include their critical thinking, management skills, maturity and commitment, as well as the invaluable experience of achieving ambitious goals and overcoming immense challenges with dedication, resilience, creativity and humility.
