The Sports Ministry insisted that

it has not curtailed the funding

for the Sports Authority of India

(SAI) in the union budget,

claiming that the money has

merely been re-arranged.

The Sports Ministry last month

received a hike of Rs 258.2

crore in the union budget for

2018-19. It was allocated a total

of Rs 2196.36 crore, compared

to 1938.16 crore earmarked

last year.

SAI budget re-arranged not

495.73 crore.

In response to a query in Rajya

Sabha on Wednesday, Sports

Minister Col Rajyavardhan

Singh Rathore, in a written

reply, said it was a wrong

perception that SAI's funding

has been slashed.

"SAI has been entrusted to

implement a number of the

twelve vertical of the Khelo

India Scheme being

implemented by this ministry.

The funds earmarked for such

verticals will be placed at the

disposal of SAI for implementing

them.

"Thus, effectively, there has not

been any curtailment of funds

for SAI, though there has been

rearrangement of resources

between the Ministry and the

SAI," the reply stated.

Col Rathore further said that

SAI is also being provided

financial assistance under

other schemes of the Ministry

like the Scheme for Assistance

to National Sports Federations

(NSFs), and the National

Sports Development Fund

(NSDF) to undertake

activities.

India's inexperienced cricket

team will have to recover

quickly from the eye-opening

loss to Sri Lanka and lift its game

by a few notches against an

unpredictable Bangladesh in

the Nidahas Twenty20 Trophy,

on Thursday.

In the absence of the rested

Jaspri t Bumrah and

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the likes

of Shardul Thakur and Jaydev

Unadkat need to up their game

in the unforgiving death overs.

Thakur leaked as many as 27

runs in his first over against Sri

Lanka but bounced back well

to concede only three in his next

attempt.

Facing Bangladesh in the

shortest format has always

been challenging for India and

it will be no different tomorrow.

Mahmudullah will continue to

lead the side in absence of the

injured Shakib Al Hasan, who

also missed the T20 and Test

series against Sri Lanka at

home. Having lost the Tests,

T20s and the ODI tri-series final

(all to Sri Lanka), Bangladesh

will be desperate to buck the

recent trend.

Senior batsman Tamin Iqbal

said the team is not having the

best of times at the moment but

is confident of a turnaround.

"It will be a different challenge

here for me and also our team.

We know that we are not in the

best of form as a team but this

can happen as I have said it's

normal for a batsman and a

bowler, we go through good

form and bad patches. So, as

a team it is quite normal for that

to happen," said Iqbal.

"I think in some cases we are

panicking a lot and I feel we

need to curb that since, as a

team, you have to accept that

when things are not going well,

we should not be panicking

and we need to go back to the

basics," he added.

The UNICEF stated, in

Celebrating the Spirit of Women EntrepreneursEmbracing Entrepreneurship

Journey of a young mushroom cultivator

As has rightly been said, the

way to a person's heart is through

his stomach. Any person will be

happy, if they are provided with good

and hygienic food. The desire to

provide quality food to people has

always been in the mind of this

young woman entrepreneur, Smti.

Yadwinder Kaur, a native of Punjab

who has been to various parts of the

country, being the wife of an Army

Officer.

Yadwinder, a promising

entrepreneur who has embarked on

her entrepreneurial journey in

December 2017 here in the Islands

where her husband is currently

posted shared her inspiring story

while speaking to the 'Daily

Telegrams' Reporter recently.

"Whatever you do, if you put your

soul and heart into it, no matter what

field you belong to, it will eventually

fructify" says Ms Kaur, an ardent

believer in God.

Kaur disclosed that it was the

programme titled 'Eat Street', aired on

Discovery Channel which she and

her husband used to watch for the

past 9-10 years spurred the idea of

providing hygienic food, and

ultimately the thought of a 'mobile

food truck' struck her. A mother of

two, Kaur manages her work

Happiness on wheels

'Happy Belly' a hit among foodies

Prof. John Tyler Bonner has rightly put it "the

sudden appearance of mushrooms after a summer rain

is one of the more impressive spectacles of the plant

world". The sight of colourful mushroom not only

excites a child but it brings out a world of emotion even

in grownups too. DT brings you the story of a young

woman entrepreneur who cultivates mushroom and

imparts training to many SHGs.

It’s shrooming yellow, pink and white oyster

mushrooms in the lab of Smti. Nitu Sindhu Shenoy, a

young entrepreneur who is into mushroom cultivation

since 2016. Hailing from Haryana, Nitu has been residing

here in the Islands since 1998, juggling between states.

She holds a doctorate degree in Agriculture Extension

besides B.Sc & M.Sc in Agriculture. Her love for

mushroom began while pursuing B.Sc and after her

marriage in 2016, Nitu turned her passion into profession

and started cultivating oyster mushrooms. "oyster

mushrooms are very much suitable for cultivation here

in the Islands besides other varieties like Shitake,

Shimeji, pink, yellow, king oyster, black ear, paddy straw,

milky white, blue oyster, white oyster, grey and black

oyster can be grown as they are summer mushroom

and suitable for tropical climate", said the young

entrepreneur.

Following her dream, Nitu visited CIARI and met

Dr. Shaktivel, who not only provided her with

mushroom seeds but also guided her. Soon after that

she started mushroom cultivation on a trial basis by

renovating her store house to create the required

ambience for the cultivation. After five days, her joy

knew no bounds, as she saw the oyster mushrooms

sprouting from the bags. Nitu also expressed her

gratitude to the Secretary, Agriculture, Shri Ramesh

Verma, who showed keen interest in her hobby and

encouraged her in every way.

Nitu opined that mushrooms make a good option

for additional income and farmers can grow them as

they can be harvested within five days and are rich in

protein and antioxidant. She also advised that people

should not randomly pick mushroom, if they cannot

distinguish between poisonous and edible ones.

"Poisonous mushroom have a ring on the stem and the

cap will have small dots. Mushrooms should be bought

from reliable source as there is no antidote for mushroom

poisoning and the safest way to eat mushroom is to

purchase from amongst the lab cultivated ones", says

Nitu.

Sharing tips on mushroom cultivation Nitu said there

are 8 strains (varieties) of mushroom which can be grown

here in the Islands and they make a good source of

income. "If you grow 100 bags of mushroom, you can

get 100 kgs of mushroom in 1 ½ month". Nitu also

provides training to SHGs through cooperative bank

and collaborates with CIARI and KVK in conducting

training programmes for women. Though she cultivates

mushroom in small scale, due to lack of manpower, she

disclosed that on an average, she gets 6 to 10 kg yield

per month.

Nitu is also planning to organize training programmes

for interested mushroom cultivators soon. She disclosed

that it was her first participation in the Andaman Bazaar

that got her closer to people and her work. Nitu wishes to

interact and share her knowledge with farmers. She is also

planning to set up fruit nursery on trail basis besides

floriculture, in the long run and expressed hope that it

would inspire many others to take up Agri

entrepreneurship. (Interviewed by Mary Pee)

efficiently and pays equal attention

to her children and husband at home.

She believes not only in 'working

hard' but 'working smart', something

we must all strive to emulate.

Kaur, who holds a Masters in

Microbiology, has worked as a

Teacher, a Trainer and a Counselor

Coordinator before she found her

calling in 'Food' and thus 'Happy

Belly' was born here in the Islands in

December, 2017. "I had been into

many other professions prior to

starting this food truck. The desire

to serve customers with good quality

food and not compromising on

hygiene propelled me to embark on

this venture here in the Islands", says

Kaur recalling her first visit to the

Islands that took her to various

tourists' spot and she realized that

more quality food to the tourists

should be offered here. 'Happy Belly',

the first self contained mobile food

truck in the Islands is equipped with

all the necessary amenities, cash

desk, serving counter and waste

disposal facility. Kaur along with her

dedicated team starts the day by 9

am where they ensure the foods are

half done in the base kitchen itself.

From 1 to 3 pm, they are engaged in

maintenance and loading work and

from 3 to 4 pm, the food truck starts

Kaur believes in maintaining

according to her is the most pre

requisite for any entrepreneur. Happy

Belly ensures that flavors are

hence the ingredients are shipped from

Kaur opines that mobile food

she remarked that people should swear

can make a mark. Kaur also plans to
