Objective of the Aesculap project is to assess the feasibility of developing a large cabinet-like mobile container system that streamlines the preparation and delivery of surgical instruments for high set number procedures (e.g. arthroplasty, spine, transplantations). Usability is the focus of this project.

Critical areas of functionality include:

1. Aseptic Presentation – How can we maximize access to the cabinet for efficient loading & unloading without violating the sterile field while using the system?

2. Completing the instrument life cycle – How can we enable the efficient transportation of soiled instrumentation to and from the Sterilization Processing Department of the hospital? 3. Enabling configuration – A variety of surgical procedures could be supported by this container. All possible set combinations cannot be predicted, so the most usable system is one that can be easily configured by the user.

4. Mobility – How can we enable easy maneuvering of the system in a variety of orientations and by a variety of users? Supporting the OR more broadly – What else can we enable? Can the system be designed to offer additional functionality to the user while transporting to / from the Operating Room?

For over 40 years, All Pro Exercise Products has been the market leader in premium quality, weight adjustable, hand-held and/or body worn products for fitness, health, wellness and rehab. Our products include weight adjustable ankle weights, wrist weights, vests, belts, a full line of aquatic products, and more. All Pro’s patented products are currently manufactured overseas to our specifications. This is done because the labor and material costs are currently cost prohibitive to manufacture in the US. As a wholesaler, All Pro currently imports roughly 40,000-lbs of products with each new shipment. Shipments must be ordered 3 to 6 months in advance, based on sales projections. The shipping and warehousing costs can be significant. If products could be rapidly manufactured on demand, those costs could be significantly reduced or eliminated.

All Pro’s end users cover a wide range of ages from high school athletes, to adults for fitness or rehab, to senior wellness programs. As the population has aged, All Pro’s market has gravitated towards an older generation. To ensure long term viability, All Pro needs to reach out to a younger market. The goal for this TE Capstone project is to develop a cost effective manufacturing process for mass production of All Pro’s ankle weights in the US.

In Ambulatory Infusion Therapy situations, a pump is used to deliver medication while allowing the patient to be mobile. Extension and IV sets used to provide the therapy are typically long enough to accommodate worse case scenario of use i.e. the longest possible distance from the source to the site of infusion. This results in tubing that dangles from the patient in most situations. As the patient moves about, there is a risk of tangled tubing getting caught onto other equipment, furniture etc, or caught under the patient when sleeping, which can lead to tubing being jerked and coming off the patient, leading to leaks, break in therapy, risk of infection etc. This project focuses on designing a disposable containment device/fixture accompanying the tubing set, which can accommodate different length requirement scenarios, without the excess tubing dangling about the patient.

Comcast is a Fortune 500 company and the largest broadcasting and cable television company in the world. Comcast services U.S. residential and commercial customers in 40 states and in the District of Columbia. As the owner of the international media company, NBCUniversal, Comcast is a producer of feature films and television programs intended for theatrical exhibition, over-the-air, and cable television broadcast.

The goal of this project is to design a pre-packaged POD of fully racked, wired, servers and switches that can be shipped and “plugged-in.” The project team will develop a process to build, package, ship, and install pods across the country. The team will have to work with major manufacturers of servers and racks, and Comcast’s facility engineering teams to develop better solutions to power and cool the pods. Various thermal models will need to be made, prototyped and tested. The team will ensure that wiring can be done with the highest efficiency and accuracy with automated testing procedures provided. The team may have to help co-design server and switch packaging with the largest manufacturers of computer and network gear in the world.

Patients with severe osteoarthritis often have pain that limits their ability to lead an active and healthy life. These individu-als sometimes opt to proceed with joint replacement surgery as a means of alleviating their pain and regaining an active lifestyle. When a person undergoes joint replacement surgery, one of the keys to the success of the surgery is the individual’s participation in physical therapy after the proce-dure. Patients either receive physical therapy in an office building affiliated with the institution where they had their surgery or at home, depending upon their ability to have transportation to and from their appointments and other factors. Physical therapy consists of several visits per week for several weeks until patients are cleared to return to normal activity.

Project Description: Develop a knee sleeve or brace that remotely transmits information regarding key physical thera-py indicators of a patient’s progress. These indicators include:

1. Knee flexion (measured in degrees)2. Knee extension (measured in degrees)3. Total number of knee flexions4. Presence of edema (swelling) – typically measured as circumference three (3) inches above and below the knee

The Daewoo Mini Drum is a compact wall mounted washer and dryer for small loads. The innovation is in that it isn’t like your typical washer and dryer, which is normally intended for bigger sided loads. The Mini Drum is a front load washer that has a much smaller square footage, meaning you can wash your clothes the moment you are finished wearing them. This idea is intended to prevent laundry from piling up as well as optimize water consumption for cleaning your clothes.

Although the unit is small, the Mini Drum goes through the normal wash cycle that a ‘regular sized’ washer and dryer will go through. During its drying cycle, the inner cavity of the machine spins (as fast as 3600 rpm) to utilize centripetal force to help remove the excess water from the fabric as it dries. As you can already imagine, during this part of the cycle, the machine starts shaking from the spin. Then, the shake causes vibrations. In other parts of the world, where they don’t commonly use drywall to build houses, installation and usage isn’t an issue. Mini Drum has had huge success in other countries such as China, Australia, etc. However, in this country, problems can emerge by the vibrations caused by the shaking and machines can fall off and result in damages.

The goal of this TE Capstone project is to find a way to minimize the vibrations caused by the spin and find methods of installations which ensures safe set ups in different types of environment.

Founded in 1889 in Luebeck, Germany, Dräger is a global company with over 13,000 employees, 6 major manufacturing sites and sales and service locations around the world. Recognized as a leader in innovation and quality, our medical and safety products are used every day to protect, preserve and save lives.

The TI500 transport incubator is designed for intra- and inter-hospital transport of pre-term babies. The function of the TI500 is to provide a stable, controlled microenvironment for the baby during transport inside the hospital as well as in ambulances and aircraft outside of the hospital. Temperature and oxygen content are the primary controlled parameters. The device is normally powered from mains supply both in the hospital and in the transport vehicle. It also includes large, heavy lead acid batteries which supply power to the device when it is unplugged from mains power to get from one point to another inside the hospital or when it is going between a mains supply and the transport vehicle. An onboard recharging system replenishes the batteries when plugged into mains power.

This TE Capstone project seeks to upgrade the battery and charging system to be lighter and more efficient. It is desirable to reduce the weight of the batteries to make the TI500 easier to carry and lift by caregivers and more suitable for use in transport vehicles, especially aircraft. In addition to weight reduction, the upgrade should seek to reduce recharging time and increase discharge time and take into account the typical short-cycle recharge use case. Consideration must also be given to certification for the intended use in ground and air transport vehicles. Finally, an updated design will reduce the risk of obsolescence and the engineering effort to support the current mature design.

EcoTech Marine continues to revolutionize the way people think about marine technology. A great deal of international attention focuses on sustaining the health of the world’s marine environments, motivated by environmental protection, food production and economic viability of developing nations, and recreation.

SCRAM, a subsidiary of EcoTech Marine, is interested in using laser technology to manufacture a high intensity and flexible off-road light for recreational and racing use. Laser based headlights are now used in high-end cars from BMW and Audi. Due to more coherent light, laser technology facilitates better visibility further away from the car then is possible from traditional technologies such as incandescent, LED, or HID lights. This TE Capstone project will include the market research, prototype and fabrication of a prototype for testing for the ATV, UTV, and 4x4 truck market.

!FreshFridge is the first affordable, smart kitchen solution consisting of smart sensors, connected food containers, inventory tracking, automated expiration warnings, food planning, recipes, and more.

To date, FreshFridge has designed and manufactured the electronics for our core components and are now looking to finalize our product's final plastic injection molded design. Through the TE Capstone program, students would have first-hand experience conducting market research, designing and creating the component housing, and creation of the injection molds required for the final consumer products. Additionally, supply chain management tasks would accompany this process to include cost of good sold analysis and revenue model forecasts.

With this in mind, we have needs for three areas of support which are - in order of priority in our project schedule - in which students would gain real-world experience for an consumer electronics manufacturing company:

1) Market research for both consumer and commercial product2) Creation of final CNC injection molds3) Supply chain research and analysis

Gentex is a global provider and partner of choice for personal protection and situation awareness products, systems and platforms. Our globally recognized products are designed, engineered and manufactured to protect and allow wearers to successfully perform their duties while surviving high G-forces, ballistic threats, crashes, high-speed ejections, life-threatening high-temperatures, oxygen deprivation, and exposure to chemical & biological agents. Failure is not an option, when lives depend on us.

Ballistic helmets have always and will continue to be in an arms race to find the lowest weight design that performs to the highest standards. Furthermore, aggressive impact requirements designed to save a soldier’s life have been implemented into mission configurable systems to defeat specific threats. In addition to ballistic requirements, preventing traumatic brain injuries has been at the forefront of technological advances.

The current simplest way to screen new and innovative shell materials for success is to build a quantity of helmets to test in various sizes and conditions. This strategy requires multiple iterations to develop a successful prototype which is only useful for material evaluation. Gentex is interested in investigating a design fixture or frame that is a representative structure to correlate between coupon performance and the performance of a curved geometry. This project will entail designing a surrogate helmet frame from fruition to a working prototype. Additionally, a successful team will acquire materials for coupon testing and form materials for curved testing.

Ingersoll Rand is a manufacturer of diversified industrial products that support productivity – air compressors, air treatment equipment, tools, pumps, winches and hoists. The Power Tools Business Unit engineering team in Annandale, New Jersey designs premium tools for vehicle maintenance and industrial technicians all over the world.

The proposed TE Capstone project is to create a means for creating a light on a pneumatic impact tool. The solution can include a battery, but not one that must be charged or replaced. One mode of operation must be the light turns on automatically when the trigger is pulled, and continues to run for several seconds after the releasing the trigger. There may be other convenient modes of operation possible, depending on the hardware used to enable this feature. The targeted platform will be an Ingersoll Rand ½” square drive pneumatic impact tool. We are challenging the student teams to identify and develop alternate concepts, then take them through prototyping and validation testing.

Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide and it is the second leading cause of pregnancy related death in the USA, accounting for 17% of maternal mortality. Uterine atony (Inability of the uterine muscle to contract effectively), is the most common cause of primary postpartum hemorrhage. At term, blood flow through the placental sites averages 500 to 700ml per min. This massive bleeding can lead to rapid maternal exsanguination. Uterine atony complicates 1 in 20 deliveries and is responsible for 80% of postpartum hemorrhage cases. Uterine hemorrhage can happen after a vaginal delivery or during a cesarean section. It can be controlled with medications or surgical intervention. For vaginal deliveries, a Bakri Balloon can be used to exert pressure against the uterine wall in order to decrease the amount of bleeding.

Currently, there no devices to help control massive uterine bleeding secondary to uterine atony during a cesarean section. Medication and suturing techniques (uterine artery ligation, compressive sutures) are used instead. These surgical techniques can be time consuming and dependent on the surgeon’s skill.

The goal of this project is to develop a dual-mechanism hemorrhage control device for intraoperative uterine atony and massive bleeding.

Stryker Orthopaedics, located in Mahwah, New Jersey, is a leading manufacturer of components for Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgeries. The surgeon may elect to use cemented or cementless Triathlon femoral and tibial components during this procedure. The cementless components consist of a highly porous biologic fixation technology to allow for bone ingrowth.

Recent studies support that cementless TKA achieves excellent results, including a 2012 study showing 96% survivorship at up to 18 years without aseptic loosening. Bone quality of the patient is a major consideration when deciding between these two options. The surgeon typically assesses this factor through tactile feel.

The purpose of this year’s project is to design an instrument to more accurately and consistently evaluate bone quality to allow surgeons to make a more informed decision regarding cementless vs. cemented femoral and tibial components. Student developed prototypes can be tested on foam constructs that simulate bone.

&,&,The custom door knobs that are one of the hallmarks of both Packard Labs and Lehigh more broadly, while evocative and artful, is not in compliance with current best practices for door hardware, in particularly in limited ability to meet accessibility requirements (Section §404.2.7 of the Americans with Disability Act Accessibility Guidelines).

Hardware that can be operated with a loose grip or closed fist, such as lever-shaped handles and U-shaped pulls, accommodates the greatest range of users. (Closed-fist operation, while advisable, is not mandated by the Standards). Round door knobs do not comply because they require twisting of the wrist. Latches and locks with small parts that must be manipulated can be difficult to use and will not comply if pinching is necessary. However, keys and access cards that are not part of the lockset are not required to comply (but those that do not require pinching or turning provide better access). Hardware that does not require simultaneous actions are better, but some types, such as handles with thumb latches are acceptable. At Lehigh and elsewhere, this had led to the ubiquitous lever handles that meet the requirements of ADAAG. This project is looking for a proposal for alternative approaches to meeting compliance requirements, and in a way that may capture the spirit of innovation and craft that mark those original doorknobs from Packard Labs. The solutions may be mechanical, electronic, or a mixture of the two.

In Friedensville, Pennsylvania, four miles south of campus, Lehigh owns a parcel of property (Ueberroth Mine) which was the location of a zinc mine that closed in 1893. Since then, human activity on the site has been limited to removing equipment/buildings and using the land as a storage location.

The engine house needs a plan for significant preservation if it is to survive to be a witness to this heritage for the next generation. The surroundings are also unique as the approximately 20-acre parcel includes a quarry (mine pit) and the fragmentary remains of other structures which were an important part of the 19th century mining activity.

This project is looking to create significant value by the student team proposing alternatives for using this historic Lehigh property; opportunities include designing a heritage park with beautiful walking paths and/or cross-country courses, picnic areas, museums, preserved historic buildings and archaeological sites in conjunction with the local township; creating a Virtual Reality walk-throughs based on 3D scans of existing buildings and of virtual re-creation of the operating pump facility. A technical and business strategy needs to be developed in conjunction with Lehigh and the local township, including raising money and designing preservation and continuing operation activities and other studies.

8-38-9.9&!.5:20.Lehigh’s waste and recycling collection and disposal process is a series of steps involving multiple vendors. There may be opportunities in each associated step to gain efficiencies, yielding customer satisfaction improvements and financial gains. The entire process has an associated annual cost in the range of $750,000. The following steps are utilized in collecting and removing waste and recycling from campus: 1. Individual users (faculty, staff, students and visitors) place waste and recyclable materials in designated bins located in offices, restrooms, common spaces, bedrooms, dining rooms and exterior spaces.2. Custodial and grounds maintenance staff remove collected waste from the containers and place them in designated areas for pick up by stake body trucks.3. Stake body trucks haul and empty the collected waste and recycling materials to compactors located in Sayre Park or Goodman Campus.4. When a compactor is full, a waste hauling service removes the compactor from campus to be emptied at either a Waste to Electric plant or recycling sorting center, depending on the materials in the compactor.5. Electric plant or recycling sorting center, depending on the materials in the compactor.6. Cost components to all these steps include wages, vehicle fuel and depreciation and tipping fees.

8-38-9.9&!.5:2' !"Previous Membrane Development Teams have worked to determine possible alternatives for the current porous membrane manufacturing process. Limitations of the current process include the use of Hydrofluoric Acid for membrane etching, membrane manufacturing lead-time, and membrane inconsistency. The most recent Membrane Development Team focused on two alternatives for membrane manufacturing 1) Roll-to-Roll (R2R) manufacturing and 2) Use of existing industry manufactured syringe filter/micro-separation membranes as two potential manufacturing alternatives that provide significant opportunity to decrease the frequency of membrane defects and increase manufacturing scalability.

In addition to continuing research into R2R manufacturing, the team will examine the ability to integrate electrodes onto the processed membrane roll. R2R not only provides the potential to manufacture a membrane, but also sputter coat silver/gold particles on both sides of the membrane, creating a continuous electrode covering the entire outer surfaces of the membrane. If R2R manufacturing and sputter coating can be developed successfully, there is the potential to create a hollow fiber membrane, which may allow for the elimination of off-chip sample preparation steps. The team would work to incorporate the learnings and development of the current Sample Prep team to produce a refined and potentially integrated design.

8-38-9.9&!.5:2' '-Previous Systems Development Teams have worked to solve several major challenges related to overall device design: 1) Reagent storage and delivery - including methods to address reagent activation and internal valve design for reagent delivery sequencing, 2) Off-chip blood plasma separation, and 3) Potentiostat miniaturization.

A continuation of the Systems Development Team will work to build upon the success of the most recent TE Capstone team, utilizing the current microfluidic chip design and the team’s concepts for lyophilized reagent delivery to integrate off chip design concepts into actionable prototypes designed for single, self-contained use in point of care settings. In addition to further development of on-chip reagent storage/delivery, the team will focus on integrating additional capabilities on-chip – a major component of integration being the on-chip ability to separate blood into plasma/serum to prevent capture membrane occlusion.
