RehabilitationWhy renovating a roof is so different from waterproofing a new one?

Different issues:-Accessibility – equipment already installed and sometimes can not be removed

-Difficult Details – New roofs and details are designedto be compatible with the waterproofing system.

Old roofs doesn’t.

-Use of building – sometime the building still beused during the works (residential/commercial)

-Fire – elements/layers of a roof can be inflammable

Rehabilitation

Different issues:-Accessibility – liquid membrane is easier to apply in tight places

DURABLE STRUCTURESLNEC Lisbon 31 May - 1June 2012

Rehabilitation

Different issues:-Difficult Details – liquid membranes fit to any shape

Rehabilitation

Different issues:-Do not disturb inner uses – silent and quick to apply.

Doesn’t need to welding equipment: electricity - gas

DURABLE STRUCTURESLNEC Lisbon 31 May - 1June 2012

Rehabilitation

Different issues:-Fire– No flame on application

- Fire resistant after curing

Liquid applied membranes

Advantages and dangers

Advantages:-Seamless waterproofing systems-High aesthetical effect -Easy to apply, less errors

Dangers:-To keep the thickness in every points-Be damaged/washed by rain before curing-Long term bridging cracks

DURABLE STRUCTURESLNEC Lisbon 31 May - 1June 2012

Liquid applied membranesThe island effect:

A higher point in a surface below a liquid will cause a minimum thickness in the liquid layer in that point, or even the lack of product.

How to avoid it?The thickness of the reinforcement allied to the thixotropic property of the liquid product helps to maintain the thickness of the layer.

Liquid applied membranes

• No danger of gassing (no CO2 produced during the reaction)

• Quicker curing

• Use Aliphatic structures – stable & no danger of yellowing(UV stable)

• Better weather durability

• Tolerant to moisture during the curing process

• Not soluble in water

Moisture TriggeredCross linking, in effect, fuses the individual polymer chains togetherat the molecular level making them difficult to separate.

• Enhanced properties: such as UV stability, chemical resistance and fire resistance.

SikaRoof MTC SystemPreparation of supports

SikaRoof MTC can be directly applied over bitumen membranes as well as ceramic tiles, asbestos or cimentitious surfaces. The system has very good adhesion to the great majority of the surfaces. Only plastics can be a problem.

However some supports need a primer to assure long term adhesion during all life cycle of the element/roof.

Metal Surfaces Ceramic PVC membranes/elementsMetal Primer to increase adhesion Icosit EG1primer to increase adhesion Primer 205 to increase adhesion

Painted surfaces Concrete or mortar WoodBonding Primer to increase adhesion Concrete Primer to control absorption Concrete Primer to control absorption

SikaRoof MTC SystemFirst layerThe system is composed by two layers of liquid membrane, wich in the first one will be embedded a reinforcement mat.We use the Sikalastic 601-BC, red colour (always).Cold applied with roller the open areas and a brush, in the less accessible spots.

This liquid membranes have thixotropic properties, yet in some cases in upstands and walls, we haveto apply more than two coats, with less consumption in each one, in order to prevent runoff and dropsin the vertical surfaces.

SikaRoof MTC SystemFirst layer – the matSimultaneously, is embedded a reinforcement mat into liquid membrane. This mat is designed especially to this system, to be very easy to embed and fits to every curves and details. It’s the Sika Reemat Premium.

This mat is pressed inside the liquid coatwith the same roller used to apply Sikalastic 601-BC.After application, we must wait a period of 6 hours, before the next stage.

Depending of the ambient temperature, after 1 hour the membrane is touch-dry.After 3-4 hours we can step on it.

We can apply the next coat until 7 days. After that we need to re-activate this first coat.

SikaRoof MTC SystemSecond layerIs used the Sikalastic 621-TC. This product is avaliable in several colours. This coat is also cold applied with roller. We also use a brush, in the less accessible spots. It is also allowed to apply this second coat through airless, because we will not embed any reinforcement.

In the higher class systems, we will have athird coating. In that case, we must wait also a period of 6 hours, before the next coat.

Depending of the ambient temperature, after 1 hour the membrane is touch-dry.

After 3-4 hours we can step on it.We can apply the next coat or make any repair until 7 days.

After that, we need to re-activatethe upper coat.

SikaRoof MTC SystemSystem classesThe waterproofing system Sikaroof MTC has 4 levels of performance. This levels are connected to the total thickness of the cured coats.

SikaRoof MTC 12 – the economy systemPrimer, if neededFirst coat: Sikalastic 601-BC with a consumption of 1,10kg/m2Embedded mat of Sika Reemat Premium.Second coat: Sikalastic 621-TC with a consumption of 1,10kg/m2

SikaRoof MTC 15 – the base systemPrimer, if neededFirst coat: Sikalastic 601-BC with a consumption of 1,30kg/m2Embedded mat of Sika Reemat Premium.Second coat: Sikalastic 621-TC with a consumption of 1,20kg/m2

SikaRoof MTC 18 – the high performance systemPrimer, if neededFirst coat: Sikalastic 601-BC with a consumption of 1,50kg/m2Embedded mat of Sika Reemat Premium.Second coat: Sikalastic 621-TC with a consumption of 1,50kg/m2

SikaRoof MTC 22 – the premium systemPrimer, if neededFirst coat: Sikalastic 601-BC with a consumption of 1,40kg/m2Embedded mat of Sika Reemat Premium.Second coat: Sikalastic 621-TC with a consumption of 1,20kg/m2Third coat: Sikalastic 621-TC with a consumption of 1,20kg/m2

The products are the same, only varies the consumptions of each coat.

-exposed, accepts light to average traffic

-root resistant can be used in green roofs

-also support pavers or concrete slabs(to heavy traffic or even car traffic)
