    Change to Methods for removal and installation of the automatic transmission assembly.

    Associated repairs that require the new workshop procedure will also change.

    Cause: Methods engineers at Land Rover have recently studied the service process for renewal of theautomatic transmission assembly for Discovery II models, and significant process changes have been made.The changes, detailed below, refine and improve the process which allow the operation to be carried out moreefficiently. Changes:

    Viscous cooling fan no longer removed.Exhaust manifold heat shield no longer removed.Driveshaft securing nuts and bolts removal time corrected.Transfer box oil drain and refill no longer required (remove for access only).Handbrake drum no longer removed (handbrake cable is disconnected inside the vehicle and thehandbrake assembly removed with the transmission).

    Action: Should it become necessary to remove an automatic transmission assembly on a Discovery II, pleaserefer to the procedure detailed in this bulletin.

    Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quotedhere must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.

    Refer to the attached table for procedures also affected by this process time change.

    Release the four clips and remove the windowlift switch finisher.

    1.

    Remove the four securing screws andreposition the window switch pack from thecenter console.

    2.

    Release the handbrake lever gaiter from the center console.3.

  • Remove the handbrake lever retaining clip andclevis pin.

    4.

    Remove the battery cover.5.

    Remove the engine acoustic cover.6.

    Remove the bolt securing the closing plate tothe transmission.

    7.

    Raise vehicle on lift.8.

    Where installed, remove the undertray.9.

    Remove the exhaust front pipe.10.

  • Remove the three nuts securing the exhaustintermediate pipe to the tail pipe.

    11.

    Release and remove the intermediate pipe from the tail pipeand collect the gasket.

    12.

    Disconnect the connector from the oil pressureswitch.

    13.

    Remove the rear propeller shaft.14.

    Remove the front propeller shaft.15.

    Drain automatic transmission oil.16.

  • Remove the bolt securing the transmission oilcooler pipe clip to the sump.

    17.

    Remove the nut securing the transmission oilcooler pipe clamp and remove the clamp.

    18.

    Remove the bolt securing the oil cooler pipe clamp andremove the clamp.

    19.

  • Always install clean plugs to openconnections to prevent contamination.

    Loosen and remove the oil cooler pipe unionsfrom the transmission. Discard the O-rings.

    20.

    Release the transmission oil cooler pipes and tie aside.21.

    Remove the starter motor.22.

    Disconnect the connector from crankshaftposition sensor.

    23.

    Remove the bolt securing the coolant pipe clipto the intake manifold.

    24.

  • Remove the inspection plate from the converterhousing to gain access to torque converterretaining bolts.

    25.

    Rotate the crankshaft for access and removethe three bolts securing the drive plate to thetorque converter. Discard the bolts.

    26.

  • Release and remove the clevis pin and C-clipsecuring the transfer transmission high/lowselector cable to the transfer transmissionhigh/low selector lever. Position the cable aside.

    27.

    Disconnect the connector from the reverse lampswitch.

    28.

  • Where installed (Up to 03MY) - Disconnect theconnector from the differential lock warninglamp switch and the connectors from thehigh/low ratio switch and neutral sensor.

    29.

    Where installed (03MY onwards) - Release anddisconnect both the differential lock warninglamp switch connectors from the main harness.

    30.

  • Where installed - Remove and discard theclevis pin securing the differential lock selectorcable to the transfer transmission.

    31.

    Where installed - Loosen the locknuts securing thedifferential lock selector cable and release from the bracket.

    32.

    Disconnect the connector from the inhibitorswitch.

    33.

  • Remove the nut securing the selector lever to the inhibitorswitch and release the lever.

    34.

    Rotate the locking ring anti-clockwise and disconnect thetransmission connector.

    35.

    Withdraw the handbrake cable from the body.36.

    Release the transfer and transmission breatherpipes from the bulkhead clip.

    37.

    Position a suitable jack to support the transmission.38.

  • Where the use of a transmission hoistis necessary, it is absolutely essential tofollow the manufacturers instructions toensure safe and effective use of equipment.

    Install the special tool, LRT-99-008A, to thetransmission jack and secure with bolts.

    39.

    Remove the two bolts from the transfer transmission, raisethe transmission jack and install the bolts to secureLRT-99-008A under the transmission sump and transfertransmission.

    40.

    Remove the two nuts securing the transmissionmountings to the chassis.

    41.

  • Remove the eight bolts securing the mountingsto the transmission.

    42.

    Raise the transmission and remove the two transmissionmounting bracket assemblies.

    43.

    Lower the transmission sufficiently to access the top of thetransmission.

    44.

    To prevent damage to components, cushion thejack pad with a block of wood or hard rubber.

    Position a second support jack under the engine using ablock between the engine sump and the jack to preventdamage to sump.

  • Remove the transmission harness bracketretaining nut.

    46.

    Remove the two upper bolts securing thetransmission to the engine.

    47.

    Remove the six remaining bolts securing thetransmission to the engine.

    48.

    Ensure the torque converter remains with the49.

  • transmission.

    With assistance, carefully remove the transmission from theengine. Ensure the torque converter remains with thetransmission.

    Install a suitable strap to retain the torque converter in theconverter housing.

    50.

    Install

    Clean the torque converter and drive plate mating faces.51.

    To prevent damage to the oil pump drive and torqueconverter, ensure the set back tolerance from the driveplate mating face to the edge of the transmissionhousing is at a minimum of 24.8mm (0.9in).

    Remove the torque converter retaining strap.

    52.

    With assistance, carefully install the transmission to theengine. Ensure engagement of torque converter spigot andconverter housing onto the dowels.

    53.

    Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine, butdo not tighten at this stage.

    54.

    Rotate the engine to align the torque converter with thedrive plate, install new bolts and tighten to 50Nm (37lb-ft).

    55.

    Tighten the bolts securing the transmission to the engineevenly to 45Nm (33lb-ft).

    56.

    Install the harness clip to stud and tighten nut to 25Nm(18lb-ft).

    57.

    Carefully raise the transmission to install the mountings.58.

    Install the mounting bracket to the transmission and tightenbolts to 85Nm (63lb-ft).

    59.

    Lower the transmission and tighten the nuts securing themountings to the chassis to 48Nm (35lb-ft).

    60.

    Remove the jack supporting the engine.61.

    Remove the two bolts securing LRT-99-008A to the transfertransmission.

    62.

    Remove the support from the transmission.63.

    Install the transfer transmission and automatic transmissionbreather pipes into the retaining clip.

    64. Insert the handbrake cable through the body to thehandbrake lever.

    65. Connect the main harness electrical connector to the66.

  • transmission and tighten the locking ring.

    Connect the inhibitor switch connector.67.

    Ensure the selector lever is correctly aligned andseated before tightening the nut.

    Position the selector lever to the inhibitor switch and tightenthe nut to 25Nm (18lb-ft).

    68.

    Connect the connector to the reverse lamp switch.69.

    Where installed (Up to 03MY) - Connect the two Lucarconnectors to the differential lock warning lamp switch andthe connectors to the high/low ratio switch and neutralsensor.

    70.

    Where installed (03MY onwards) - Connect the differentiallock warning lamp switch connectors to the main harness.

    71.

    Where installed - Connect and secure the differential lockselector cable to the transfer transmission with the clevispin.

    72.

    Check and adjust the differential lock selector cable.73.

    Connect the high/low shift cable to the bracket/lever andinstall the clevis pin and clip.

    74.

    Install the inspection plate to the converter housing andtighten the bolts to 7Nm (5lb-ft).

    75.

    Install the bolt securing the coolant pipe clip to the intakemanifold and tighten to 10Nm (7lbf.ft).

    76.

    Connect the connector to the crankshaft position sensor.77.

    Install the starter motor.78.

    Release the oil cooler pipes.79.

    Clean oil the cooler pipe unions and install new O-rings.80.

    Make sure any blanking plugs are removed beforecomponent is installed.

    Align and install the cooler pipes to the transmissionsecuring clamps. Install the nuts and bolts, but do nottighten at this stage.

    81.

    Tighten the oil cooler securing clamps, nuts and bolts to82.

  • 10Nm (7lbf.ft).

    Tighten the oil cooler unions to the transmission to 25Nm(18lbf.ft).

    83.

    Install the front propeller shaft.84.

    Install the rear propeller shaft.85.

    Connect the connector to the oil pressure switch.86.

    Using a new gasket, connect the exhaust intermediate pipeto the tail pipe, install the nuts and tighten to 25Nm (18lb-ft).

    87.

    Install the exhaust front pipe.88.

    Where installed, install the undertray.89.

    Lower vehicle on lift.90.

    Install the bolt securing the closing plate to the transmissionand tighten to 10Nm (7lbf.ft).

    91.

    Install the engine acoustic cover.92.

    Connect the battery ground lead.93.

    Install the battery cover.94.

    Install and secure the handbrake cable to the handbrakelever.

    95.

    Install and secure the handbrake lever gaiter to the centerconsole.

    96.

    Install the window switch pack to the center console.97.

    Install and secure the window lift switch finisher to the trimcasing.

    98.

    Fill the automatic transmission with oil.99.
