TCT HistoryTupelo Community Theatre was born from the dreams of sixteenvisionary community leaders who met in 1969 to form an organization to develop, promote, teach, and stimulate interest in the dramatic arts. Jerry Napier served as thefirst president of TCT, Sandy Ford as vice president, Martha Hitch as secretary, andRowland Geddie as treasurer. Other charter board members were Marilyn Bank,Martha Geddie, Bill Hitch, Jack Kellum, Linda Kinsey, Gus and Ruth Liveakos,Mary Alice McAlister, Margaret Anne Murphey, Jean Pettis, Edith Thomas, andCharlotte Westbrook.
Since its first production of Laura, directed by Ruth Liveakos in October 1969,TCT has presented more than 300 productions seen by tens of thousands of loyalpatrons. For the first several years of its existence, TCT was a gypsy troupe, performing wherever there was available space. In 1976 TCT purchased an oldchurch building on East Main and turned it into a theatre. In 1984 TCT purchasedthe historic Lyric Theatre building, fortuitously located on Broadway! Major renovations and capital campaigns have been done over the years, transforming The Lyric from a dilapidated movie theatre into the beautiful live theatre venueyou’re seated in today.
As TCT grew physically, it also added new patrons. Season ticket holder numbershave grown to more than 1200 patrons for the last few seasons, making TCT one ofthe largest community theatres in the state. It has also grown in artistic excellence. In2001, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014 TCT won the Best Production award atthe Mississippi Theatre Association Festival. In 2004, its production of Bel Cantowas a winner at the regional Southeastern Theatre Conference festival and in 2013The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was runner-up Best Production. The2014 production of The SantaLand Diaries was a winner at SETC in Mobile, withawards for acting and costume design.
One of the most challenging strategic goals TCT has accomplished recently wasestablishing an alternative venue for smaller, less commercially viable productionsnot suitable for the regular five-show season. In November 2013, TCT Off Broad-way opened with The SantaLand Diaries in a renovated retail space just blocks fromthe Lyric Theatre. Actors, directors, board members, and patrons are excited aboutthis new opportunity for TCT to further its mission and serve its community. InJune 2014 TCT was awarded the Twink Lynch Organization Achievement awardfrom the American Association of Community Theatres in part due to this “majorstep in new directions.”
While much has changed in the forty-plus years since its first production, TCT’shas continued to grow and improve. And our original purpose has never wavered –to develop, promote, teach, and stimulate interest in the dramatic arts.

TC T Off Broadway……or TOB, as we’ve come to affectionately nickname it, was born in the fallof 2013 as the culmination of one of our long-term strategic goals. TCT needed aseparate and smaller performance venue to:
• Produce shows that might not be suitable for our regular season – especially smaller ones
• Produce shows that could attract actors and directors who want to do “meatier and edgier” shows
• Attract new and different patrons
• Give TCT an alternate audition and rehearsal space
• Provide additional warehouse space
Since November 2013, TOB has produced four extremely successful shows and hosted several auditions and rehearsals for mainstage shows. And we look forward to even more success at 213 E. Franklin Street this year. If you have ideas for shows you’d like to see, or direct, or participate in, call the TCT office at 662-844-1935 and give us your suggestions. In the meantime, like us on the TCT Off Broadway Facebook page so you don’t miss any opportunities at TOB.
See you there!
