INSIDE: Equipment Analysis - Heavy Duty Day Cab Tractors - Heavy Duty Sleeper Tractors - Medium Duty Trucks - Light Duty Trucks SUMMARY Quarter 1 saw an incredible amount of increase in average pricing on the private resale market in comparison to the end of 2014. There was a definite shift in momentum, which was in large part due to the increase in the number of heavy duty cab & chassis and heavy tractors available on the market. Within the past 6 months, January saw the lowest prices. January tends to be a slower month due to the number of year-end sales that occur during Q4 and the large number of sales that have occurred in the past few years for February and March. The largest month over month decrease within the last 6 months was during November, which brought about a 6.7% increase in price on the overall truck private resale market during February followed by a 15.3% increase in March. More heavy duty tractors and cab & chassis trucks are entering the market with only a few light duty pickups available during Q1. All five of the US regions saw volume increases between Q4 and Q1 with the largest being in the West followed by the Southeast. This analysis was conducted using data over the last 12 months that powers the Truck Blue Book database. All currency shown is in U.S. Dollars. HEAVY DUTY DAY CAB TRACTORS, AVERAGE UNIT ASKING PRICE, BY MONTH

Mack saw a large drop in pricing during December with a quick turnaround in January and the remainder of Q1. Most of the individual manufacturers stayed relatively stagnant month over month going into March showing that the majority of the overall price variability was not driven by these makes going up in average price.*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

Even though the 5 US regions saw increases overall, in terms of heavy duty day cabs the volume was slightly lower in the Midwest. Despite the decrease in volume QoQ, they continue to hold 28.7% of the US market share. Northeast saw no shift in market share, but the West was up 2.17% QoQ.*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

HEAVY DUTY SLEEPER TRACTORS, AVERAGE UNIT ASKING PRICE, BY MONTH

There were only a few Kenworth’s available during January skewing the pricing towards the lower priced ones available. Freightliner quickly dropped from top priced in January to the lowest during February at a 25.8% decrease. Volvo and Kenworth fought it out in March for top pricing sleeper tractors after Kenworth’s dramatic changes in the remainder of Q1. *This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

Both the Southeast and West saw volume increases for sleeper tractors in terms of market share. Just like on the day cab market, sleepers dropped in the Midwest losing 6.2% of market share in Q1.*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS, AVERAGE UNIT ASKING PRICE, BY MONTH

During Q1, International went from the lowest priced manufacturer on the medium duty market to the highest nearly doubling within the quarter. The only medium truck among these top four to not drop in January was Hino, up 2% from the end of Q4 to the beginning of Q1.*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

Unlike the heavy duty market, the Southeast held the most volume during Q4 on medium duty trucks. Despite drops in market share during Q1, they remain the second most popular region to sell class 4-6 trucks. During Q1, the Northeast rose to the largest market share up 3.4% from Q4.

LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS, AVERAGE UNIT ASKING PRICE, BY MONTH

After all four manufacturers converged in pricing during December, Q1 brought about many changes. Both Dodge and GM/Chevrolet brands dropped significantly in price during March. February numbers were the highest in all 6 months. Freightliner saw the only price increase in March up nearly double from February despite such a low pricing January. All four manufacturers saw a price convergence again at the end of Q2.

*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.

Light duty was the only size class this quarter where the top region gained market share. The Southeast was up 0.7%, but the Northeast rose 3.6% between quarters. This was highly driven by the 3.3% drop in market share in the Southwest allowing room for the Northeast to grab some of that volume.*This analysis was conducted using a proprietary database of resale market activity, not currently being sold.
