Taylor County 4-H Newsletter July/August 2015 Greetings 4-H Families and Friends! As this newsletter is being prepared, many of your kids and I are enjoying the splendors of Camp Upham Woods. This is our first year camping here, and I think it’s going to be a wonderful, amazing experience! Over the next few weeks, check our Facebook page and see some of the fun pictures and stories of our adventures. But camp isn’t the only thing happening in 4-H! Fair is just a few weeks away! You should all be registered at this point and getting your projects finished to show off everything you’ve learned this year. I can’t wait to see all the neat things you’ve done. As this 4-H year draws to a close (4-H year starts on July 1), remember it’s time to start planning for next year already! Charter information and enrollment forms will be coming soon. This last year has seen some amazing things happen, and you should all be proud. I want to give a special thanks to all of the volunteers who make 4-H possible, both inside our organization and outside of it. The Fair Board has worked so hard this year, and you’re all going to be amazed when you see the improvements to the grounds. The Federation has generously underwritten the purchase of new sheep and swine pens for the fairgrounds, along with donations from MASS and, I think, Farmer’s Union Juniors. Time Federal Savings Bank has made a donation towards new rabbit pens, and the Federation has paid for what was left so that we won’t have any more escapes in the rabbit barn! And wait until you see the work done to the Soda (and Pizza!) Stand! You should all be very proud to live and participate in a community that comes together to support our kids, and kudos for all the hard work people have done! With the start of the new year we’ll have Record Books to turn in, trips to apply for, Cultural Arts Fest, and so much more. If you have time, I encourage you to get involved with your club and with the Federation. Remember, many hands make light work! Taylor County 4-H Newsletter

July/August 2015

Greetings 4-H Families and Friends!

County Awards & Record Books

We hope you’ve had time to review the record book pages referred to in the May/June newsletter. If you have not already started your record book, now is the time to do so! Don’t wait until the last minute. The most successful record books are done with thought and care, and you’ll also learn more than rushing through it.

Why should you do a record book? Here are two reasons:

Keeping accurate records teaches you life skills and reflects on your ability to carry through on your projects until completion. When you write down all that you have done, I can almost guarantee that you will be amazed at your accomplishments. You won’t be able to hide your sense of pride and you will be inspired to try even more. There is a certain magic to writing. The record book will also become a portfolio showing experience, long term commitment and leadership, all great items when building a resume. It can make a significant difference.

By completing these and submitting them to your organizational leader, you become eligible to win recognition pins and seals for your project work.

What pages need to be in my record book? Members complete portions of their record book based on their grade in the 2014-15 4-H year (the grade you just completed, not the grade you are going into this fall). The older you are, the more we expect you to be able to do.

The green record book covers, printed on card stock, are also available in the UW-Extension office, and we have a very limited number of ring binders available. If you prefer, you may use your own binder or report cover to hold your book, keeping in mind neatness and a formal presentation for your record book. Record books are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31 at the UW-Extension office.

MPE (Member Program Evaluation)

Resume and Interview

The Federation is revamping the MPE process to make it more applicable to real world situations. In addition to their record book, applicants for award trips (see list on page 11) and the Key Award will complete a cover letter and resume, due August 31. Guidelines will be available at the UW-Extension office in mid-July. Youth also will need to request a letter of recommendation from an adult who is not a relative. This letter should be sent directly to the UW-Extension Office (please supply an addressed stamped envelope) and must be received by August 31.

Applicants will then complete an interview with the Federation Executive Board on Wednesday evening, September 9. Youth will be notified of their interview time prior to the meeting. Youth in grades 8 and older will receive a letter with more details after the Federation’s July meeting.

Amanda Bresina

Horse Camp Award

This award will be given to a Taylor County 4-H Horse Project member. The recipient will receive $300.00 toward a horse camp of choice.

To qualify you must:

Be an active 4-H horse project member.

Adult and Youth Council's Annual Meeting

What is Fall Forum? The purpose of Fall Forum is the annual meeting of the Wisconsin State 4-H Adult Leader Council (ALC) and Wisconsin State 4-H Youth Leader Council (YLC). The Fall Forum is a living demonstration of youth adult partnerships at their highest level.

Who attends Fall Forum? Each county has one adult delegate that serves on ALC. In addition, ALC has provided the opportunity for one youth delegate from a county to attend Fall Forum. Other attendees include current ALC Board members, current YLC members and invited YLC candidates.

What happens at Fall Forum? Each of the 72 Wisconsin counties selects at least one adult and one youth 4-H volunteer to actively participate in Fall Forum. The adult volunteer delegates are considered the members of the Wisconsin 4-H Adult Leader Council with a one year term and this serving as their annual meeting. The Forum provides volunteers the opportunity to learn, teach, network, and discuss critical issues and initiatives with the 4-H Youth Development program area on policies and direction affecting Wisconsin 4-H. Volunteers practice and demonstrate youth adult partnerships at the highest level through this experience. The experience involves adult 4-H volunteers that are members of the Wisconsin State 4-H Adult Leader Council Board (ALC) and the Wisconsin State 4-H Youth Leader Council (YLC). These volunteer leaders are selected through a statewide process to provide leadership and support for all 4-H volunteers.

Fall Forum gives each county the opportunity to have a voice in the future of Wisconsin 4-H. Let your voice be heard through attending this year's Fall Forum. During business meetings, ALC will select the ALC Board member and YLC votes on new YLC members.

Fall Forum is made available by two grants and a nominal registration fee from all participants. Thank you the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation and Monsanto for their generous contributions to make this event possible.

Registration for 2015 Fall Forum is done through 4-H Online. The Federation has agreed to underwrite the cost of leaders (teen and adult) who wish to attend this amazing event! If you’re interested, contact the office for more information.

Goal-Setting:

What are three skills you’ve like to learn in the next year?

What are some ways you can learn those skills?
