Na Te Kaiwhakahaere Awhimai Reynolds WELCOME to our very first electronic newsletter “Tatau Tatau” where we will share what we are doing at a national level, as well as, acknowledge what our membership is doing in the community to support wahine and whanau Maori. The League has a proud legacy that spans 60+ years. A legacy we intend to honour and build on through leveraging the advantages of modern technology, thus, expanding our existing kete of knowledge and experiences. The following Strategic Priorities have been identified as a first step in giving sustenance to our vision, our mission and our values: • To promote the kaupapa of the League; • To raise the profile of the League; • To promote the wellbeing of Maori women

and their whanau; and • To increase membership. CLICK HERE for a summarised version of our Strategic Plan.

We are encouraged by the high level of interest in the League’s first national website launched in May 2013, as well as, our Facebook Page. Feedback has been positive and it’s clear people of all walks of life and age, are interested in learning more about the League. Tatau Tatau e-Panui will be published bi-monthly. Should your branch or region like to contribute please contact [email protected]

Te Kaiwhakahaere / General Manager, Awhimai Reynolds

AFTER 10 YEARS, the League continues to deliver its Whanau Toko i te Ora programme (WTITO). Specifically targeting high needs whanau with tamariki (under 5-years) the programme is fundamentally and proactively based on the League’s founding principals. WTITO kaimahi provide genuine care and unconditional support for whanau. National training is held annually for kaimahi to further support and enhance their ability to deliver to whanau communities.

WTITO Kaitiaki for the Aotea region, Stacey O’Caroll speaks about being a part of recent training. CLICK HERE TO PLAY VIDEO

OUR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Te Kaiwhakahaere, Awhimai Reynolds is excited about building a sustainable future and increasing membership to ensure the legacy of the League is as robust as the founders intended, more than 60 years ago. “It’s our responsibility to build a legacy that accommodates the aspirations of future leaders, in particular wahine Maori and whanau.” Referencing the steady flow of responses from the ‘Expressions of Interest’ form on the League’s website, Awhimai says there are strong indicators that wahine in the 30-40 age group are curious and interested in the League based mostly on a connection through whakapapa. “The common thread in 90% of these enquiries is that at some time in their lives, there’s been a connection to the League that they are keen to revisit, so we want to embrace this legacy which is very exciting.”

KITTY BENNETT MNZM ‘SORT OF’ RETIRES She has been described as a gentile kuia, adorable mum, grandmother, popular past National President, as well as the resident Rockstar for her Wellington branch, Te Ropu Whakawhaiti. At a recent function to acknowledge her retirement from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Enterprise (MoBIE), Kitty was a reluctant centre of attention, only agreeing to a function on the basis it would be low key. Having booked herself to do the Paris Marathon in April, it is obvious things will not be slowing down for this gracious Lady of the League.

SPEECH CONNECTS LEAGUE INTERNATIONALLY One of two keynote speakers, former National President Areta Kopua enlightened the audience with her speech about growing up with the League. She's seen here with Academic, Researcher and League member, Dr Kath Irwin enjoying a day of celebration at the Te Ara Tau Seminar 2014, hosted by University of Victoria, Wellington.
